What has happened to Andrex?? It’s so flimsy and yet expensive!! My friend suggested Aldi brand but they didn’t have any in stock today. Please share the brand that you recommend!

Andrex or aldi. In Aldi take care to get the unscented pack if you react to fragrance - most of their options are scented, only one isn't

Happyjoe · 10/12/2025 07:55

I used Waitrose for years, only reason I ever bought anything from them, then they went down the awful route. Big 'outrage' from shoppers and they brought it back. Was the best available and was like Andrex was 20 years ago.

But noticed last batch I bought (I buy a few packets at a time because it's a bit of a drive to nearest) is going downhill again, getting rough. Still, it's still better than Andrex and half the price.

bugalugs45 · 10/12/2025 07:59

I like Waitrose cashmere feel , but the essential one is fine too . I don’t like WGAC or Nicky ! But any port in a storm 🤣

APinkAndSpottyGiraffey · 10/12/2025 03:33

I believe it was called Izal (sp?) and was pale green… we had it for a while in our secondary school loos, it wasn’t practical!

It used to make fab tracing paper though, was forever drawing on that stuff!

Globules · 10/12/2025 08:04

I discovered Nicky about 10 years ago. I've never gone back.

Cushelle. The Asda shades is a second to that

agreed, I always buy cushelle. Asda shades is made by the same supplier 🧻

KilliMonjaro · 10/12/2025 07:30

Spreadsheet? 🤣

Very droll! My DF and sister use Lidl but the sheets are tiny and still not as good value as the ones I buy.

RandomNewIdentity · 10/12/2025 08:09

Who Gives A Crap. Good quality, delivered in bulk, doing some good. I don't drive so tend to shop at local stores and order in bulky stuff. Also smol for washing tabs etc

Sainsbury's double rolls. A roll of this lasts forever.

Sainsbury's Super Soft White Toilet Tissue Double Rolls 4 equals 8 Rolls | Sainsbury's

Agree. These are the best I’ve found too. Almost too good to be true for the price, I keep expecting them to be discontinued.

Try Sainsbury’s double roll!

Do you have a source for this claim?

We use WGAC and are happy with it.

But it is, the toilet roll is manufactured in china. They are open about it: https://blog.whogivesacrap.org/home/made-in-china-faq

I much prefer Naked Sprout to WGAC. I found WGAC so crumbly and rubbish.

Oh well that is good to know!

Another vote for Nicky from Home Bargains! Thank you @Starship74 for the tip to bulk buy on line, I didn’t think of that :)

I am finding loo roll called Nicky fairly hilarious - esp as I imagine a lot of home bargains shoppers are called Nicky..

Oooh how do you have the insider info??

MaleficentQueen · 10/12/2025 08:25

Whatever’s on offer, and decent enough quality not to give me a fissure 👍🏻

Heylittlesongbird · 10/12/2025 08:25

I don’t know what’s happened to Andrew but it has got bad.

im using Tesco Luxury Soft Quilted at the moment and it’s very good.

Not sure what the brands have done that the own brand is substantially superior and cheaper.

That’s because it was the same stuff as Andrex from years ago, all made by the same supplier. I work in this industry and clearly need to get a life Grin

Toilet roll moved from the flat paper of many years ago to embossed or quilted purely because it meant they could reduce the number of sheets on a roll, but maintain the overall diameter - since more air is essentially being added to the roll. It has no other benefits.

ainsisoisje · 10/12/2025 08:36

Lidl quilted stuff - can't remember the name but in a purple packet. Its great!

mbonfield · 10/12/2025 08:37

We have been using Cushelle double rolls for many years

ImFineItsAllFine · 10/12/2025 08:39

Asda Shades is the best if you don't like quilted.

DeQuin · 10/12/2025 08:42

Wobblylegs1 · 10/12/2025 01:11

Total tangent, but anyone remember that terrible stuff they used to put in public toilets in the 80s? It was like greaseproof paper!

OMG yes. We had that at school. Hard, scratchy, unabsorbent. Good to use for tracing paper though ...

MinnieCauldwell · 10/12/2025 08:44

Nicky from HB or Costco own brand

RollWithItt · 10/12/2025 08:47

OrlaOrka · 10/12/2025 08:21

Oooh how do you have the insider info??

As long as they use FSC paper, you can see yourself by checking the FSC certificate number on the packaging Smile if the certificates match then it’s the same supplier.

HereintheloveofChristIstand · 10/12/2025 08:49

Nothing like an enthusiastic loo roll thread.
I use the Aldi brand - it's fine! And I am quite fussy when it comes to toilet paper.

EverythingIsComputer · 10/12/2025 08:50

You might like this at Waitrose: https://www.waitrose.com/ecom/products/waitrose-ultra-soft--smooth-classic-bathroom-tissue/272321-836423-836424

this is soft, the roll lasts for ages, isn’t quilted, scented, glittered etc. just like all normal loo roll used to be. They discontinued it but brought it back as lots of us were furious!
