She has a few designer handbags.

They do family outings every few weekends but not every weekend.

I am the mother in the couple, I have just bought a new car. My neighbour has made an offhand comment this morning about it. TBH I thought…like most of you…we are an average family 😅

work full time and have no childcare because we have flexi time and can wfh alternate days. Pay for afterschool club the off time. Dc are 10 and 13 so they are old enough to get on with homework etc once home.

the reason I gave the other information about bags hairdryers etc is because the neighbours comment isn’t the first lately and I was getting pissed off. My sister, a cousin and two good friends made off hand comments about winning the lottery. No we just save hard. No debt!

You have a mortgage so presumably a considerable amount of debt. You sound like a typical average family.

MiddleAgedDread · 09/12/2025 12:09

you sound quite "flashy" and into material things

handsomeson · 09/12/2025 12:02

I’d be confused at how they both work full time with no child care but that’s all.

My DIL works with her DM in an office from her DM's home. There's a nursery set up there. DS works compact hours (four days a week), DIL does site visits when DS is off on a Friday. If they need to go out to a site on other days, which isn't often, I look after GD. They still get weekends off together.

Mokeytree · 09/12/2025 12:10

I think you are possibly being disingenuous as are many of the commentators. I think you must both be earning pretty well.

EarthlingsAhoy · 09/12/2025 12:11

@gemful is your new car bought outright or leased/credit? If bought outright then good on you!

KoiTetra · 09/12/2025 12:12

First thoughts.... Bit of a weird post, why didn't OP actually give us all the information and tell us why they want to know this.

didgeridid · 09/12/2025 12:12

I don't think I'd notice?

I think it's weird you know that much about them 🤣

Is this going to be about social class, or another benefit bashing thread?

The latter I expect

WhyCantThingsJustBeEasy · 09/12/2025 12:13

I'd say ' Good for them'. But only because youre asking! In real life, I don't think I'd give them a thought tbh.

It’s all swings and round abouts.

No one knows how big your mortgage is, how long you were saving before being able to buy this house or if you were lucky enough to get a big inheritance etc.

No one knows what is being sacrificed to afford designer handbags and gadgets. Some people prioritise these over other things so will go without else where to buy them or you could have 10 credit cards used to the max!

Some people are great at budgeting and making the most of their money and others aren’t so much so seeing people like this baffles them.

You do have a big luxury of flexi working to cut childcare costs so I’m sure this helps a lot.

Yes outright. My first new new car ever! 😅

No one could say based on the information provided - the house could be a small £350k affordable new build on an estate, a 6-bed worth £2 million, or anything in between.

Well my first impression of this reply after your original post is you must be a bit of a bragger and people get irritated by it. How do people know all the things you have in the original list? I mean, house and cars would be obvious, but do you literally tell people whenever you buy something new including what brand it is?

It also depends entirely where it is.

My first house was new build - it was also £160k because the developers had a range of offers on at the time (I bought the last on the site), and despite being in a “nice” area of Middlesbrough - it was still in Middlesbrough.

Oddities1 · 09/12/2025 12:17

I think anyone who buys a brand new car is an idiot but so many people are idiots I wouldn't think much of it.

Then I'd assume you are both working hard and seeing the fruits of your labour. If it's on your own merit then people being snarky are just being mean and jealous.

Yes obviously there are degrees in terms of cost of the house but for people who have recently purchased a new house and have two children to have the spare money for two brand new cars as well as expensive phones, hairdryers, handbags etc is a decent amount of money however you look at it I would say.

Do you go on holidays as well?

Stop bragging about your new purchases and people won’t comment on them? 😆
There’s literally no reason for anyone to know what hairdryers you have or what your mortgage or childcare arrangements are.

Coffeeishot · 09/12/2025 12:20

Well @gemful good for you people are just to opinionated for their own good i would probably over polish your new car just to annoy the neighbour 😀

shhblackbag · 09/12/2025 12:20

I have a feeling you'd like a specific answer? It's a weird question, OP. People think you (general you) a lot less than you think. It's good to remember that.

Well then I’d think k those people are quite unhappy if my decidedly average life is worthy of comment. But what I’d think first is why is this bothering me.

ChristmasMantleStatue · 09/12/2025 12:23

TBH I wouldn't think anything of it. I also have never had a brand new car!

I don't care about what possessions other people have.

Their fancy expensive holidays on the other hand...... THAT I get envious about!
