To say that most people in the UK want illegal immigration to stop

Sleepysleepycoffeecoffee · 06/12/2025 10:12

I recently commented on a Facebook post to say the majority of British people are against illegal immigration. I was asked by several other users what survey I based that opinion on. I responded with the question ‘do you think most people want illegal immigration to continue then? Because if not, then surely they want it to stop?’ I didn’t receive any responses to that.
Without getting into any political arguments or name calling and giving no ifs, buts or reasons for your view, please vote as follows.

YABU - I want illegal immigration to continue.
YANBU - I don’t want illegal immigration to continue.

I think many people have compassion fatigue

if you had asked them 10 years ago there would have been a lot more support for asylum seekers than there is now

Parker231 · 06/12/2025 11:08

Migrants awaiting for their claim to be assessed are not allowed to work so aren’t taking jobs from anyone.

Technically, cannabis smoking and shoplifting are illegal, too. There’s the law, and then there’s enforcement of the law. This particular aspect of UK law isn’t enforced or monitored. You only need to live in a place that houses migrants, asylum seekers etc to know that the majority work. Tbh, good on them for being industrious. The downside? With no taxes, housing costs, bills and immense purchasing power of the UK pound back home, this does hold down local wages. I think this is one of the reasons the minimum wage has been hoiked up so high.

Samrutha · 06/12/2025 11:16

I want legal and illegal immigration to stop. But yes I want illegal immigration to stop as we should be allowed to protect our borders, verify who is coming in and be free to reject anyone we don't want. Communities and British society do not benefit from swathes of male refugees. Also they are fleeing France (a perfectly safe country)

For some reason I've been having a few dreams of being in Paris. I've been before and would love to go again

I personally want the hate to stop. It's disgusting how hateful this country has become towards anyone who is "other" be that brown or disabled.

I would argue it’s not hate, but fear. That, and the sense of unfairness and injustice.

Nesbi · 06/12/2025 11:17

I think it would be morally reprehensible if we as a country relied on our island status to push asylum seekers onto other countries and avoided taking any.

I also think however that “illegal immigration” forms a tiny percentage of overall immigration into the country, and is being used as a scapegoat issue for the fundamental structural problems that we are facing.

Living standards are dropping, wages are going nowhere and the wealth of the country is increasingly owned by a small percentage of the super wealthy.

This trend will continue, and our children are going to find it incredibly difficult to own a stake in society. Instead they will be spending every penny they earn on expensive food, expensive services and expensive rent. They will effectively be wage slaves - and all the time they work to survive the wealthy elite will keep getting richer and richer (just as they are now).

None of that is being caused by “illegal immigrants”. Don’t fall for the scapegoating, look at who is really causing the problem that is tearing our country apart.

Rightsraptor · 06/12/2025 11:17

What constitutes illegal immigration is an interesting question, don't look to me for an answer though there must be one and it probably doesn't include genuine refugees & asylum seekers. However, the clue should be in the word 'illegal'. If you ask people if they think taking stuff illegally from shops, having illegal sex with others, occupying property illegally .. on & on ... they'd say yes, of course they object BECAUSE IT'S ILLEGAL. There is nothing wrong and everything right in objecting to illegal acts.

FellowSuffereroftheAbsurd · 06/12/2025 11:23

I think most people in the UK want all crimes to stop, at least crimes they agree should be crimes. I don't think crimes around migration are that unique in this.

Really, the ones I find of largest concern are the gangs who knowingly bring in people who have gotten into their debts, often to do illegal work (cannabis growing and processing is a well known one) to supposedly pay off their debts but their debts actually grow further with the costs of bringing and housing, these 'debtors' are caught because they're the ones stuck at the sites of the crimes, sent back, and the gangs finds them and bring them in again.

I wish the focus was more on these gangs. I think having the focus on 'students', overstayers, and questionable asylum seekers (some of each of these will be 'debtors') ignores a significant root to why many are experiencing issues with the illegal immigrants for those living in areas where these gangs are running rife.

Netcurtainnelly · 06/12/2025 11:24

Yes stop it, its causing so many problems.
We all know why people want to come here.
Some of them arent even grateful either they repay us by raping and murdering.
Rhiannon Skye White in Wolverhampton is a fine example.

Just cannot get my head round why he was allowed in and why he thinks thats a great way to behave to your host country.

Before anyone says yes but any man can do this. We can't do anything about that but we dont need more people coming into the country adding to it.

Her country and Starmer let her down massively.

I want illegal immigration to stop.

However, claiming asylum isn't illegal.

I would like to see the introduction of safe and legal routes so that desperate people don't have to make perilous journeys in small boats.

Hear, hear.

SerendipityJane · 06/12/2025 11:29

What a fucking stupid question.

You won't find a single person who honestly wants any illegal immigration

Stupid questions for stupid people

To say that most people in the UK want illegal immigration to stop
HoppityBun · 06/12/2025 11:32

I would like all illegal activities to stop. I doubt that anyone here is actually in favour of criminal acts and illegalities?

gogomomo2 · 06/12/2025 11:33

Define illegal? What was the exact question? Very few people want unrestricted migration but most people think we should allow those who are persecuted to seek refuge and those who have families to be reunited under certain circumstances. Most of us also do or should recognise that people are undertaking dangerous journeys to escape situations that if we in said circumstances we would do anything to escape from. We need better legal routes to migration rather than this xenophobic rhetoric I read.

Be honest - who here would criticise my DD bringing her dh into the country l (educated, European, white, excellent job)? But my friend is Asian and was criticised for marrying a woman who is Indian (both are doctors). It’s barely disguised racism and xenophobia so often. Legal migration is what we need

Netcurtainnelly · 06/12/2025 11:34

Parker231 · 06/12/2025 11:08

Some are working for just eat etc.

TempestTost · 06/12/2025 11:35

I think most people want a few things:

People claiming refugee status who aren't really eligible to be dealt with in a timely way and sent home.

People who are actually trying to pull one over by doing things like throwing away their documents to be dealt with quickly and sent away.

Something to be done about dangerous ways to enter the country like boats or the back of lorries.

With the idea that if these things were done consistently it would vastly reduce the number of people attempting to get in.

I also think many people are not happy with the numbers or rules for legal migration and want those changed to reflect what they think is a more appropriate number.

Samrutha · 06/12/2025 11:37

I don't want refugees and asylum seekers here if that's the actual question. They pass by so many safe countries. The impact on our communities isn't a positive one. How do we benefit?

Hibernatingtilspring · 06/12/2025 11:37

I think the OP is one of a depressingly large number of people who think that anyone who claims to care about others are just doing so to be nice and look good, and that everyone secretly doesn't like foreigners, everyone wishes there were less disabled people everyone thinks workhouses were a good idea really and that we're all just too polite to admit it. A bit like the men on the internet who think that any decent man doesn't really value woman and they're all deep down, a misogynistic like they are.

Op I'll happily send you to Rwanda in return for someone who comes here on a small boat. At least they've got a bit of ambition.

Bambamhoohoo · 06/12/2025 11:38

I think, especially on mumsnet, people want everything illegal to stop.

law abiding people generally do.

that doesn’t really mean anything though does it?

I don't think that is true, you will see people who think that all migration should be legal.

Or who simply ignore/won't admit that there are people who come fraudulently, and so believe all refugee claims are legitimate.

It's not a majority but it is a thing.

Having seen coaches lined up on the french coast to transport them to where brand new dinghys are waiting to bring them over, plus (all single lone males) they are told to chuck away their documents, I think we have enough. We have no more room here, & our people are going without because of this!

Figgygal · 06/12/2025 11:42

Personally, I think this is a very complex issue in increasingly complex and unstable world. The people that scream about illegal immigration aren't interested in facts or figures or definitions and the difference between and illegal migrant or a refugee or an asylum seeker. They just see brown faces or someone getting something that they think means someone they think that is more worthy wont get it. Reform offer simple solutions to simple people, how the Tories can try to do the same given their utter failure over the years is shameful.

We are the SIXTH richest economy in the world, and we are nowhere near pulling our weight in helping refugees and doing our fair share.

Our constant whingeing about refugees is utterly, utterly shameful only 5% of migrants are asylum seekers.

If we want to see less illegal migration in the way that I believe you mean we need to sort out safe routes and vastly improve the processing times of asylum claims. It's Interesting to see the huge hiring campaign that's going on over in the government's new fair work agency which will deal with compliance and enforcement and fine employers to generate new money into the treasury but they can't do the same to recruit case handlers on the immigration side.

And I'm with a previous poster. Your question itself is stupid because no one is going to be saying that they support illegal immigration. The question is why aren't people understanding why it's happening better without just screaming that they're coming for benefits which they can't claim any anyway

Hibernatingtilspring · 06/12/2025 11:44

I love the idea that a poster who hates immigration is dreaming of living in Paris

but don't you understand - I'm a VALUABLE person! Because of where I was born, I'm DIFFERENT!
