To say that most people in the UK want illegal immigration to stop

1000 replies

Sleepysleepycoffeecoffee · 06/12/2025 10:12

I recently commented on a Facebook post to say the majority of British people are against illegal immigration. I was asked by several other users what survey I based that opinion on. I responded with the question ‘do you think most people want illegal immigration to continue then? Because if not, then surely they want it to stop?’ I didn’t receive any responses to that.
Without getting into any political arguments or name calling and giving no ifs, buts or reasons for your view, please vote as follows.

YABU - I want illegal immigration to continue.
YANBU - I don’t want illegal immigration to continue.

Awful to see.

So the 'legal asylum seekers' are in fact illegal immigrants who have been caught.

Err no they are asylum seekers. I don’t know how else to explain that it’s legal to claim asylum. Those who are actually illegal get nothing from the state and will do their best to stay under the radar. It’s nothing about “getting caught”.

I do enjoy all this nonsense about 'skills'. We need people with skills, illegal migrants might have 'in demand skills', British people aren't 'trained' like all these high value migrants. What on earth do people mean by this? Broken English, no qualifications, absolutely penniless? Do they have good admin skills, IT skills, managerial, technical? That they've obviously learned in Somalia or Afghanistan or rural Pakistan? With their second to none education systems? What a strange and silly dreamworld some women live in.

perhaps in some cases the skill of jumping the housing queue and obtaining benefits

So you want to stop others migrating to Britain but you would like to migrate to France? Wow.

As stated by others, coming here to claim asylum is not illegal (yes even if you come in a small boat, and even if you go through other safe countries on the way).

If the UK implemented ways to apply for asylum from outside the UK, or allowed safe legal passage to those claiming asylum, the small boats (and their connected traguc deaths) would stop. It is totally possible because they did it for Ukrainian refugees. But of course, they tended to be white so the racists don't mind them claiming asylum here.

I should have said we should drastically reduce legal migration as well.

Coming here via boat may not be technically illegal. But they aren't presenting their documents to a border guard at a registered port are they? They are leaving many safe countries just to risk death again on the channel.

If I remember correctly it was only Ukrainian women and children coming? The men stayed in Ukraine.

RowOfRunners · 06/12/2025 18:51

We are an island. A small one. With finite resources. We cannot begin to imagine how many people would like to come and live here - and this is before global warming makes parts of the world no longer viable because of the heat. We - obviously - need to have control of our borders so that we can choose who gains entry. We CAN’T take everyone. We just can’t.

How many would you need to allow by safe route for Channel crossings to stop?

You mention Afghanistan. Why is it then that many go back on holiday? I had an Afghani Uber driver a few months back. He went back to there on holiday, said how nice it was and "don't believe everything they say on the news".

....in regard to you claiming people should stay and fight..... You re moving the goal posts on that argument.

Taxi drivers tell me many things, one once had that Nigel Farage in the back of his cab....

Could also lead to him losing his asylum status, bit tricky explaining that passport stamp, not too mention the risks in going back, its not for nothing few Western airlines fly there.

Samrutha · 06/12/2025 19:00

Immigration should be.

Where do we have a deficit of skills? Until we train up our own people to do something, we can allow a limited amount of immigration. Preferably as well from countries with close cultural compatibilities.

Illegal immigration - big no. Return them either to the place they last journeyed from or country of origin.

poetryandwine · 06/12/2025 19:01

rachelhere · 06/12/2025 18:38

What are YOU talking about? I wasn't talking about points-based immigration, I was talking about illegal migrants and comments upthread! I know they are two different things, thanks.

Some asylum seekers do have skills. Just since 2018 one person who found asylum here has won a Nobel Prize and another has won a Fields Medal.

But I assume you know that it is perfectly legal to claim asylum in the UK, however you arrive. If we pass a law saying otherwise we will be on a collision course with the 1951 Convention on Human Rights that we signed.

Those who enter illegally intending to stay underground are not the topic of this thread.

Edited

Yes because the men were banned from leaving, but still 100s of 1000s have fled Ukraine or gone into hiding and many refuse to fight.

Its not as straight as you would have us all believe.

How would you return to France, when France refuses? Gun boats? Marines? perhaps use our Nuclear deterrent?
Maybe threaten them with closing the channel tunnel?

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 06/12/2025 18:47

Why are they throwing bombs into shops? Never heard that before. One of the stories I was thinking of was the school girl that was raped and murdered on her way home. I think that was a Scandinavian country.

I have no idea. From memory I believe it’s African gangs. If you watch Simon Reeves in Scandinavia he goes around with the bomb squad for a bit which is quite interesting.

Many of whom we cannot fly to (war zones) or they refuse as well... what then?

I'm not against deportations at all but i wish people would think and at least do some basic research.

As always, simply solutions are nothing of the sort....

Sweden had problems with Turkish/Somalian neighbourhoods & gangs when i lived there in the 90s, i was in Stockholm and there were places where no white person ever went..... their immigration since has been utterly insane & compounded the issues.

I might add, in complete disregard to the general population, no one i knew or worked with supported what their Govt was doing.

I am not against deportations when a case for asylum really isn’t there, either. I agree we cannot support economic migration for the foreseeable.

But it is against the Convention on Human Rights to return someone to a situation of harm, and @Alexandra2001 is correct about war zones. No one knows what to do about asylum claimants without papers. PP mentioned upthread that occasionally this is for good reason but obviously it leads to abuse.

Illegal immigration is when those who have an application to remain rejected but don’t leave. They are not illegal immigrants when they arrive in the country.

There’s more too it than that

  • Entering a country without going through border control
  • Overstaying a visa (the most common situation)
  • Not meeting the legal requirements to remain in the country

They are willing to take people back for money.

While entering without passing through border control is an offence, claiming asylum protects one from prosecution in international law (The UN Convention on Human Rights, 1951) and, to date, in British law.

If British practices change we will be on a collision course with international law

justwaitingformyturn · 06/12/2025 19:49

I think they need to look into student visa also, far too many are being issued. IMO once you have graduate you need to go home.

We must become a heck of a lot more harsher when it comes to immigration

We can probably find a way to get them there. I think it's very limited what countries have banned commercial flights (just Ukraine and Sudan). But I think even Sudan has some flights to there.

They can't refuse to take their own people, and if they can refuse to take them, why can't we refuse to take them in the first place?

I am sure you can pay countries to take back their people,

Who cares that they face death, you don't.
