To buy myself a jellycat as an adult?

I know it sounds odd, but I’m heading off on some solo travelling next year. It’ll be the first time I’ve ever done something like this.

I mentioned off hand to a friend that I was thinking of getting myself a jellycat as a little companion (just a bit of fun, really), and she went off on me that it was incredibly strange to do. She said that as an adult I shouldn’t want a stuffed toy.

I know it does sound childish, but as a child I loved my stuffed animals. I had so many of them (all huge, or I’d take one of them) and I named and loved each of them. I just thought it might bring me a little bit of comfort while I’m away, but now I’m questioning myself massively

Adults collect them and plenty of travelling adults take teddies travelling and photograph them in cool places. Life is short, buy the toy and have a great adventure x

If you want it, get it. But you may find you quickly regret filling your rucksack with non essentials when you're packing and unpacking in hostels every few days.

Needmorelego · 26/11/2025 19:29

I am 50.
I love soft toys.
I currently spend most nights sleeping with my arms around an IKEA shark.
Go for it 😍

mumofoneAloneandwell · 26/11/2025 19:29

Yanbu! Have a lovely time xx

NoodlesMcGee · 26/11/2025 19:29

If you want to buy one, go for it. People take ‘lucky’ or meaningful objects all the time - a beloved book, a photo, trinket etc. Why not a soft toy? Enjoy your travels!

CandyCaneKisses · 26/11/2025 19:30

I’ve bought them for my teen and can see the appeal. Treat yourself.

DuchessDandelion · 26/11/2025 19:30

Yanbu if you want a jellycat or any other stuffed toy get one :)

But the grown up Beanie Baby generation is the reason why they're so hard to come by now and why they're always out of stock when I go shopping for nephews and godchildren!

2boyzNosleep · 26/11/2025 19:30

Do what makes you happy, your 'friend' sounds like a child the way she reacted.

Having a soft toy is harmless (and wont take up much space).

Im an adult.. I have like almost every colour of bunny.

And I dont care what anyone thinks, im not asking for approval. Get the teddy. Have a fabulous trip

Calypsocuckoo · 26/11/2025 19:34

You go for it and buy yourself a cuddly friend. I have quite a few jellycats which I like to rearrange to decorate my boring home office (currently in a winter setup with a teddy sitting on a sledge). Life can be crap and boring, why not have a little bit of fun. I have a soft toy jellycat which goes on holiday with me, I like the comfort, my DH bought it so it represents love and comfort, and my family group chat like photos of my teddy on his travels. My mum even knits him the occasional jumper. Who cares what anyone else thinks, you do what will make you happy. 😊

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 26/11/2025 19:35

I have a white Jellycat dragon called Errol, who I sleep cuddling every night. If it will bring you happiness, @SoloTripSoloVibes, what could be wrong with that? Just do it!

Andonthatbombshell · 26/11/2025 19:36

Yanbu.
Get the pink and white marshmallow pair. Or the vine tomatoes and olives, if you can still get them. They're all dinky.

Createausername1970 · 26/11/2025 19:36

Do it, life is too short to worry about what other people think.

CheeseWisely · 26/11/2025 19:36

YANBU. I bought a couple of cuddly toys for myself as an adult, one of them while I was travelling solo, and now I have DS I occasionally buy a jellycat ‘for him’ that then sits on a shelf in my bedroom out of his reach. Your friend sounds joyless TBH.

Justwingingit2005 · 26/11/2025 19:37

I got my first JC at 45 last week. The little peanut.

SoManyDandelions · 26/11/2025 19:37

I have two Jellycat Caboodles and I LOVE them. I find them really comforting when I'm feeling overwhelmed (parenting teens - one with ASD - caring for elderly parents, working full time etc etc).

This is what I think

re the size @SillysoggyspanielI’m looking at the tiny Bartholomew bear, so I feel like it wouldn’t take up much room!

I love jellycats! Maybe get a key ring one, they're so cute. (Age 60 😆)

Umy15r03lcha1 · 26/11/2025 19:38

You are allowed one very small one, and that's it!

Newsenmum · 26/11/2025 19:39

She sounds very boring. Which one are you going for?

Lemonsugarpancakes · 26/11/2025 19:40

I’m 41 and have an octopus, a mini octopus, a unicorn, a bunny with floral ears, and Jellycat himself (jelly underneath his Christmas hat) 😊They are better than a husband!

Bartholomew is on his way to me 😄

I love jellycats! I have an orangutan and he's as loved by me as my children are 😂

whistlesandbells · 26/11/2025 19:46

Go get your cuddly. It’s none of your friend’s business! Small note here that not everything needs to be shared btw.

Sartre · 26/11/2025 19:47

I’ve asked for a Feathers McGraw warmie this year so YANBU. My teenage DD loves jellycats, she likes the food ones in particular.
