To buy myself a jellycat as an adult?

SoloTripSoloVibes · 26/11/2025 19:28

I know it sounds odd, but I’m heading off on some solo travelling next year. It’ll be the first time I’ve ever done something like this.

I mentioned off hand to a friend that I was thinking of getting myself a jellycat as a little companion (just a bit of fun, really), and she went off on me that it was incredibly strange to do. She said that as an adult I shouldn’t want a stuffed toy.

I know it does sound childish, but as a child I loved my stuffed animals. I had so many of them (all huge, or I’d take one of them) and I named and loved each of them. I just thought it might bring me a little bit of comfort while I’m away, but now I’m questioning myself massively

If you were considering not going because you didn’t have a specific Jelly Cat then o
I would say you are being unreasonable.
But I totally understand you buying one for company!

Enjoy your travels

Snowcat4 · 27/11/2025 03:36

I got Theo Turkey for Christmas last year
I thoroughly recommend him ,,his tail is the softest thing ever
My family have bought me many jelly cats ,due to loosing my collection of soft toys as a child .
But I have told them not to buy me any more this year .
They just sit on a shelf in our room ,so it feels a bit of a waste ,I don't really know what to do with them.
But a small one ,for travelling has a purpose ..I hope you enjoy your travels with Bartholomew bear xx

I don't have grandchildren.
You're really making a meal of this 🙄

Godchildrem then. Hmm

Point is adults buying jelly cats is not hindering you getting gifts for kids.

The op has ordered a jellycat she's excited for, be happy for her and stop going on at me, it's weird

Squirrel60 · 27/11/2025 09:00

This ''friend'' is no friend at all. Tell her to sod off.

Buy yourself a lovely Jellycat, as many as you want and take it travelling with you!

I'm 60 and have various soft toys!

dancinfeet · 27/11/2025 09:01

I have a jellycat croissant that my daughter bought for me the first christmas she had a full time job and I’m nearly 50. If you want one go for it.

TinyHousemouse · 27/11/2025 09:06

Not weird in the slightest IMO 😂. My DH bought me one that we took on holidays with us and I took on all my work trips abroad. Mr Cat is in so many photos 😂 which DD loves as she’s now “acquired” him and loves seeing what he got up to before she was born.

Lol you were the one saying people like OP are depriving your GC of jelly cats, that is weird. I’m very happy for OP.

🙄

I don't have a Jellycat but I think they're really adorable. I do have a plushie bat who lives on my desk though. I also collect Lego, and I'm in my 40s. Go for it!

You go for it and buy yourself a cuddly friend. I have quite a few jellycats which I like to rearrange to decorate my boring home office (currently in a winter setup with a teddy sitting on a sledge). Life can be crap and boring, why not have a little bit of fun. I have a soft toy jellycat which goes on holiday with me, I like the comfort, my DH bought it so it represents love and comfort, and my family group chat like photos of my teddy on his travels. My mum even knits him the occasional jumper. Who cares what anyone else thinks, you do what will make you happy. 😊

Oh I love this so much! Teddy on a sleigh sounds amazing!

DinoLil · 27/11/2025 11:53

Nothing wrong with that at all! Remember the PG Tips monkey toy that came with giant boxes of tea bags? I took mine on holiday for years and have loads of photos of him in funny places.

Calypsocuckoo · 27/11/2025 17:53

Here he is with a couple of others, sledge was from B and M if anyone wants similarly sophisticated home decor 😂 I don’t care what anyone thinks, they make me happy. I also have the loo roll one in my downstairs loo and it is often admired by visitors !

To add, I only have one JC of my own, and it’s very special to me because it contains the ashes of my very dearly missed little cat who passed away this year aged 18. I couldn’t find an urn that I liked and she never slept a night outside in her life so didn’t want to scatter her, so now she sits on my bed inside this little heart cushion.

If you need a cuddly toy for comfort when you're travelling solo, then I don't think you're ready for solo travelling.

Bore off

Didimum · 02/12/2025 20:28

You shouldn’t let others dictate your emotions so much, OP.

I have seven labubus.

Wolfpa · 02/12/2025 20:32

With the price of them I think they are only suitable for adults

SoftBalletShoes · 31/12/2025 03:08

Some people have mentioned the price of Jellycats. I just want to say that the Aurora collection of Palm Pals are every bit as nice as the Jellycat plush objects, and a fraction of the price. I have some and they are SO soft. I also have Jellycat Amuseables so can compare. I have found Aurora soft toys to be amazing in general, not just the Palm Pals.

Go for it! I have a couple of jellycats and hubs bought me a small Squishmallow for xmas! He collects Funko pops so between us we have a house full of collectibles!

LittlePurpleTeapot · 31/12/2025 15:51

Many moons ago I used to design and sew mohair jointed teddy bears. They were the old fashioned type and had glass eyes, stitched noses etc.

They weren't for children because of the parts which could come loose, they were all bought by adults, many were recreations of bears which they had in their childhood.
For many people their bear or soft toy was their first friend and comforter and for those who had been through horrific childhood trauma, their bears meant a great deal to them.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with an adult enjoying a cuddly soft toy.

Sid is the entire reason I’m going on my solo travels! He is absolutely lovely

You should tell him this, I am certain he would be thrilled to know he has inspired others

IgnoreTwats · 31/12/2025 16:48

I changed names for this OP but I've got jellycats, squishmallows and other friends and I love them so much. I actually bought some of the toys their own Christmas presents this year and thought how bloody sad a lot of people would find this but it genuinely gave me a lot of joy and entertainment.
I think adult life can be very grey and dull and if a little jellycat brings you comfort or happiness then it's a wonderful thing.

Rictasmorticia · 31/12/2025 17:02

Go for it. DD bought her 80 year old Dad a soft toy for Christmas. It was the Wolf from the French supermarket advert.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 31/12/2025 17:11

My dd bought me a bashful bunny holding a rose for Christmas.

Shes in bed with me every night and l cuddle her. I love her. I’m 62.
