To buy myself a jellycat as an adult?

I know it sounds odd, but I’m heading off on some solo travelling next year. It’ll be the first time I’ve ever done something like this.

I mentioned off hand to a friend that I was thinking of getting myself a jellycat as a little companion (just a bit of fun, really), and she went off on me that it was incredibly strange to do. She said that as an adult I shouldn’t want a stuffed toy.

I know it does sound childish, but as a child I loved my stuffed animals. I had so many of them (all huge, or I’d take one of them) and I named and loved each of them. I just thought it might bring me a little bit of comfort while I’m away, but now I’m questioning myself massively

Do it! Says me with two Christmas rat toys on my dashboard!

BusySittingDown · 26/11/2025 19:50

I love Jellycats, they're sooo cute.

I don't have any for myself but the DDs have loads and I indulge in buying them for them. I think I like them more than they do though.

My SIL collects them. She's 35!

Something about them is just so endearing

So glad you've ordered one. Hope you enjoy your trip.
My mum bought me a white Teddy when Woolworths closed in Leeds I was 29. He sits on my bed every day and I'm now 67.

I have a Paddington Bear in my office complete with tiny red wellies & a Jellycat I my car ( toffee the shy puppy) :)

toastofthetown · 26/11/2025 19:54

I take my beanie baby cat travelling with me wherever I go. I also have a couple of Jellycats too but they stay home. Cuddlies are cute, cuddly and make me happy. I love this quote by CS Lewis “When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

Talkingfrog · 26/11/2025 19:54

You buying yourself a jerrycan is no different to people buying themselves disney blushes. Lots of adults do that, and mo one thinks anything about it ( I am over 50 and got given a disney plush last Christmas- it was a surprise and is lovely).

CoolPlayer · 26/11/2025 19:54

not strange at all x

Enko · 26/11/2025 19:59

Your friend sounds odd. Its not like you are considering taking a full sized Skog with you travelling.

We obviously need a photo of Bartholomew when he arrives.

Also dont forget to send a photo of barthlomew somewhere amazing to your friend.

Buy yourself whatever you like, don't worry about what other people think. Your friend doesn't sound like much of a friend. Enjoy your trip 🙂

I’m in my 30s and I have quite a few in my collection, I love the colours and cute faces, it’s not harming anyone, I pay all my bills, I treat myself to a jelly when I see one I like.
i have the baby Bart bear, he’s adorable
live your life however you want
ignore your moody friend

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 26/11/2025 20:07

Happy travels OP, it's a great idea and I hope you and your little companion see some wonderful sights!

Myfridgeiscool · 26/11/2025 20:10

So pleased you’ve got yourself a Jellycat OP. I’ve got a few, DD has some too 😁.
They are the cutest toys.
Enjoy your travels!

You are allowed one very small one, and that's it!

To buy myself a jellycat as an adult?
MissDoubleU · 26/11/2025 20:10

Oh tell them to get tae fuck! I have loads of soft toys. I have a jellycat bag for festivals. My DH buys me a soft toy sometimes when we go somewhere new and special. Do I cuddle them when I sleep? Aye, I fucking well do. Who gives a shit. Soft things are nice. Do they have names? Well obviously. My DH has never been this guy but he has cancer and he has asked specifically to take one of them in when he stays in for his chemo because the soft slice of home and the wee cuddly companion is just what he needs. Comfort. Familiarity.

People who can’t experience childlike joy need to grow up. Get the jellycat. They’re especially soft and cute. I can’t wait to see a picture of which one you choose.

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 26/11/2025 20:12

YANBU, your friend sounds odd and childish in her reaction. Surely no one cares that much about looking like an adult when you are, in fact an adult. I think it sounds like a nice idea and I'm glad you're treating yourself to one.

Her reaction makes me think of this quote by C.S. Lewis:

"When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up."

Yes, they're just so jolly!

In a world that is full of hate a misery, it's nice to find things that bring you joy.

Which Jellycat are you going for?

SwirlyShirly · 26/11/2025 20:15

Yanbu- do what makes you happy. I got a little too attached to a JC tortoise with a particularly grumpy looking face in the garden centre this weekend myself! He, with his proper :( face and little knitted beanie, really made me chuckle. If I had a spare £50 I would have definitely have bought him. Life is too short to worry about what other people think. Safe and happy travels ♥️

Georgiepud · 26/11/2025 20:20

I would.
I don't think it's strange at all.

ERthree · 26/11/2025 20:23

Why wouldn't you have one? Your friend is a bit strange. In fact i feel quite sorry for her.

Northbynorthbest · 26/11/2025 20:25

If you need a cuddly toy for comfort when you're travelling solo, then I don't think you're ready for solo travelling.

Octavia64 · 26/11/2025 20:25

I am an adult. I have several stuffed toys.

SlothCat · 26/11/2025 20:29

I'm an adult and have a manatee, sloth and octopus jelly cat. They're very soft and I can imagine if you're far from home, it'll be a nice thing to have
