To buy myself a jellycat as an adult?

I know it sounds odd, but I’m heading off on some solo travelling next year. It’ll be the first time I’ve ever done something like this.

I mentioned off hand to a friend that I was thinking of getting myself a jellycat as a little companion (just a bit of fun, really), and she went off on me that it was incredibly strange to do. She said that as an adult I shouldn’t want a stuffed toy.

I know it does sound childish, but as a child I loved my stuffed animals. I had so many of them (all huge, or I’d take one of them) and I named and loved each of them. I just thought it might bring me a little bit of comfort while I’m away, but now I’m questioning myself massively

Why do you give a fuck about what she thinks?

ThatsRoughBuddy · 26/11/2025 20:29

I share my bed with a 3ft tall capybara plushie. Get all the Jellycats you want!

Tryingnottobeamouse · 26/11/2025 20:34

Your friend is being very narrow minded and cold. Of course an adult can enjoy them! Honestly, I don't think I could trust someone who can't understand the appeal of a jellycat. In this dreary and disconnected world, they're a little piece of cuddly joy!

Get your lovely soft pal and take it travelling. Take photos of you both enjoying yourselves! Have a fab time!

If you need a cuddly toy for comfort when you're travelling solo, then I don't think you're ready for solo travelling.

I just think it’s a nice thing to have in case I feel like shit. It’s just a little thing to bring me some joy

Yes, they're just so jolly!

In a world that is full of hate a misery, it's nice to find things that bring you joy.

Which Jellycat are you going for?

Well I ordered a brand new Bartholomew from the website…

then I got on vinted and stumbled across a penguin that I couldn’t say no to, and then a ghost.

so now I have a collection 😄

In Japan they have hotels that have special beds for guests who bring their toys with them.

Evolutionarygoals · 26/11/2025 20:41

I bought my 85 year old aunt a pot of flowers plushy last Easter (not jellycat but basically the same thing). She loves flowers but is allergic so she can't have them in the house. She loves it 😁 you're never too old for something that brings a smile to your face

CoralPombear · 26/11/2025 20:42

Do it, take joy where you can!

Alpacajigsaw · 26/11/2025 20:43

Meh, I’ve got 2, a latte and a croissant. There are worse vices!

socks1107 · 26/11/2025 20:43

I have a jelly cat! Do it and enjoy your trip

Toddlerteaplease · 26/11/2025 20:46

I have had a Jellycat squidgy bear for 25 years. His name is Eric. He attended my wedding he was present at the birth of my child. I love him and couldn’t imagine life without him

ThatsRoughBuddy · 26/11/2025 20:56

I need him.

I have a few. I also bought my kids some. If they bring you joy and comfort why not?

CloudSky · 26/11/2025 21:02

YABU. Not because you want a stuffed toy, but because you want a JellyCat! Overpriced and ridiculous designs. They do me in! 🙈

But perfectly fine to have toys, plushies etc!

CoffeeAndCakeBringMeJoy · 26/11/2025 21:02

I’m mid-40s and bought my first Jellycat a few weeks ago. It sits on the shelf in my little home office, and makes me smile when I’m wfh. If someone wants to judge me for it, I really don’t care - it makes me happy.

You go for it and buy yourself a cuddly friend. I have quite a few jellycats which I like to rearrange to decorate my boring home office (currently in a winter setup with a teddy sitting on a sledge). Life can be crap and boring, why not have a little bit of fun. I have a soft toy jellycat which goes on holiday with me, I like the comfort, my DH bought it so it represents love and comfort, and my family group chat like photos of my teddy on his travels. My mum even knits him the occasional jumper. Who cares what anyone else thinks, you do what will make you happy. 😊

Need photo of your teddy on a sledge please

Needmorelego · 26/11/2025 19:29

I am 50.
I love soft toys.
I currently spend most nights sleeping with my arms around an IKEA shark.
Go for it 😍

My 4 year does the same. Blarge Shark and his Ikea Orca. They're gorgeous. Glad to hear your shark is happy!

AnotherNameChange2025 · 26/11/2025 21:09

Get it!

I have a collection of beanie boos and put a small owl one in my DP’s bag whenever he has to travel without me. He sometimes sends me pictures of it having adventures.

I don’t see any harm in adults liking soft toys or teddies but I do know a couple of people who seem to think it’s a personality trait and someone I know takes her “comfort plushies” to work in her rucksack with them hanging out and doesn’t take the rucksack off.

I hate the word “plushie” but not sure if that’s in reaction to being annoyed by her posts or my ability to get easily irritated 😂.

Yanbu if you want a jellycat or any other stuffed toy get one :)

But the grown up Beanie Baby generation is the reason why they're so hard to come by now and why they're always out of stock when I go shopping for nephews and godchildren!

Edited

There are a million other plushes your DGC can get.

KitTea3 · 26/11/2025 21:11

Meh I have no time for people who judge other or look down on them for shit like this.

I still have the stuffed toy dog I had when I was a kid, he's as old as I am and screw anyone who won't accept it (as an aside my partner is on the spectrum and his special interest is soft toys so I didn't need to worry and we have plenty 😁🥰)

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 26/11/2025 21:12

Well done OP!! You should do what you want and what makes you happy!! Jelly cats are wonderful and lovely and make me smile. I hope your new collection makes you happy!!

TheTowerAtMidnight · 26/11/2025 21:14

I'm currently on holiday with my Jellycat peanut, so obviously I say go for it!

teaandtoastwouldbenice · 26/11/2025 21:14

Go for it! (I have 4)
