To buy myself a jellycat as an adult?

I know it sounds odd, but I’m heading off on some solo travelling next year. It’ll be the first time I’ve ever done something like this.

I mentioned off hand to a friend that I was thinking of getting myself a jellycat as a little companion (just a bit of fun, really), and she went off on me that it was incredibly strange to do. She said that as an adult I shouldn’t want a stuffed toy.

I know it does sound childish, but as a child I loved my stuffed animals. I had so many of them (all huge, or I’d take one of them) and I named and loved each of them. I just thought it might bring me a little bit of comfort while I’m away, but now I’m questioning myself massively

My mum bought me a little cat Teddy for my 30th.
He’s 20 years old now, also loved by DH & DS…

I love jellycats. They are harmless and bring
joy to people. Get one.

NavyNorris · 26/11/2025 22:53

Life is short. If the toy is going to bring a smile to your face and make you happy then absolutely buy it. It's not really anyone else's business! Enjoy your travels ☺️

I just got a Camembert Jellycat from my kids for my 43rd birthday today! I love it!

MferMonsterSearchingForRedemption · 26/11/2025 22:54

I have a lot of Jellycats, Collectible Charlie Bears and many random teddies.

I have a shelf for my Charlie Bears in my room.

Love my IKEA Djungelskog, who lives in my bed in winter.

JaceLancs · 26/11/2025 22:54

Buy it!
I have a (real) British Blue cat and I succumbed to buying a steiff version when on holiday in Berlin recently - he sits on my pillow and I have been known to cuddle up with him

ContinuewithGoogle · 26/11/2025 22:56

When you see how much they cost, they are more for adults than kids.

I have 4. So far 😂.

I think that people who are very concerned about harmless things being "weird" or out of the ordinary are insecure in themselves. I think that's where it comes from. They don't really know who they are in the world so are looking for rules to cling onto.

Of course it's fine to take a little cuddly toy travelling. The delightful Japanese ambassador takes his little Paddington around everywhere and has gained quite a following for it.

I've got a Jellycat teddy bear that I sleep with and take on holiday, another that lives on my armchair that I cuddle when watching horror films, and a Scotty dog on my work desk (that one just fell into my basket when I was buying something for my daughter).

I am 44 and cuddle my very old battered jellycat every night. I find it very hard to sleep without him.

Needmorelego · 26/11/2025 23:04

@MferMonsterSearchingForRedemption Did you know you can get baby Djungleskog's ?

I am 50.
I love soft toys.
I currently spend most nights sleeping with my arms around an IKEA shark.
Go for it 😍

I’ve got the ikea shark! He’s on my bed right now. He’s called Bernardo, like in West Side Story.

I read somewhere that the annual stocktake at IKEA is a nightmare because staff have to go around the store finding all the random places people have put the soft toys 😂

DuchessDandelion · 26/11/2025 22:42

Obviously, since the old Beanie Baby rage the only soft toys that have been made are JellyCats (!)

So plenty of choice for your grand children, no?

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 26/11/2025 23:36

I want a Jellycat. I love the seafood amusables.

BananaPeels · 26/11/2025 23:38

I have a friend who said his dad told him that one of the joys of adulthood is that you can buy things for yourself whenever you want. No one can tell you what to do.

so he went and bought the millennium falcon Lego set.

he was 40.

buy the jellycat

I don't have grandchildren.
You're really making a meal of this 🙄

jezlifecoach · 27/11/2025 00:14

It’s your money - buy whatever!

I have a mr bean dolly that still takes pride!

GrimDamnFanjo · 27/11/2025 00:45

Get that little mussel with the zip it’s adorable!

Whatifitallgoesright · 27/11/2025 00:53

How does caring what she thinks about you affect you?

BoxesBoxesEverywhere · 27/11/2025 01:19

Your friend is a judgemental weirdo, ignore her.
Who cares what she thinks?!
Who are you harming by getting yourself a soft toy?!
Nothing wrong with that at all. It's harmless, brings you joy and comfort - what's not to like?!
She's the one with the issues, not you.
Get yourself the jelly cat.

Shortandfatandpaleandlovely · 27/11/2025 01:22

I bring a teddy travelling, but it's my teddy, not a jellycat which seems to be an expensive fad.

kittyfairy66 · 27/11/2025 01:40

This! I bought myself the doll's house I always dreamed of as a child and my parents could not afford. Well, my husband bought it for me as a gift, which makes it even more special! I adore it. I also collect dolls and I have a lovely Charlie Bear red panda that I cuddle when I want a bit of comfort. My daughter bought me a lovely little Jelly Cat rabbit for my birthday (52). He sits on my desk and I reminds me of her as well as being very cute. Life is hard, we should all spend a bit of time and our hard earned money on things that make us smile, who cares what other people think?

XenoBitch · 27/11/2025 02:11

As an adult, you can spend your money on what you want. If it brings you joy, then it can never be money that has been wasted.

Buy the Jellycat.

Timeforanewgame · 27/11/2025 02:11

I was at the Jellycat Patisserie in Paris this year and grown adults were queueing up for it to. I say go for it
