So who is going to be brave enough to ask whether Shabana Mahmood's proposed reforms are right/sensible/racist?

Is Shabana Mahmood right or wrong to restrict asylum seeker's rights? In general?

Can you be sure how many were White/Christian born outside of Europe? bearing in mind the colonial past of much of Europe in Africa and Asia.

"Americas" could mean anything.

& hasn't the UK taken in 10s of 1000s of HK nationals who are from Asia?

No, I can't say, but on another thread a poster linked to this article - the thread closed before I could point out that the family of ten are actually French and moved to the UK as EU citizens (I think everyone just looked at the photograph);

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3780802/Jobless-French-migrant-family-handed-44-000-benefits-year-warned-homeless-reject-house-turning-THREE-small.html

Another indication here;

^Since the end of the 1990s significant numbers of former refugees have made use of the right to free mobility as EU citizens and moved internally within the EU. It is estimated that one third of the Dutch Somali community (around 10,000 people) has moved to the United Kingdom (UK).

The Hong Kong Scheme is not cheap:
To apply for a British National (Overseas) visa, or to apply to switch to or extend one, you must:

  • pay the visa application fee
  • pay the healthcare surcharge
The first time you apply you must prove that you have enough money to support yourself and your family members for at least 6 months while you’re in the UK. Health surcharge -
  • £2,587.50 if you’re staying for 2 years and 6 months
  • £5,175 if you’re staying for 5 years
For each child (under 18), it costs:
  • £1,940 if you’re staying for 2 years and 6 months
  • £3,880 if you’re staying for 5 years

@Pharazon

germany are sending people back to Afghanistan…

The German government has woken up, just like ours is doing. You can't keep ignoring people or calling them far right. Those insults don't stick anymore. All of Western Europe is starting to toughen up their borders.

Agree and it’s long overdue.

Labour reacting now but it’s too little too late.

No, not a journalist and never have been, @Ihatetomatoes. Just a former student of political science with an interest in why the Home Office is so very difficult to run well. I'm retired, and a One Nation style Tory for disclosure. And I started the thread because it was all over the papers yesterday and there was nothing on MN.

Well, as a superior being with all the answers, how about you rock up to Westminsted and tell Keir that you could run the office so much better, Im sure you would be extremely successful at the post. Such a shame you are going to remain a Mumsnet armchair expert instead.

Yes and they spent a fair amount of energy telling everyone how wrong and far right they were.

Bit of a snippy response. For clarity, I have not ever claimed to know all the answers. I am shockingly bad at admin and would be a catastrophe at the Home Office, but I am still allowed to be interested and ask questions, or would you disagree?

It was a very strange and pointless snipe at you imo! Still, gotta have a hobby eh? 😀

Now they're worried about having 152 far right AFD MPs in their parliament, at one time that would have been unthinkable.

That's what happens when you ignore people. Labour, take note.

If they would like to pay me a very senior civil servant's salary, I would graciously consider it!

exactly 🤣🤣!!

They are finally starting to acknowledge and read the mood of the country. But it won’t save them they are sunk.

I agree with her stance. We need to get on top of this.

So let me get this right.
If they improve the immigration problem, you are not happy.
If they start to improve our NHS, schools etc (which Labour tend to do), you're not happy.

Don't tell me, a Reform voter? 🙃

For what its worth it think its a move in a sensible direction but would like to understand what the 20 year period/ 30 monthly reviews would mean for people's job prospects and any children they have. Otherwise the balance isn't right for me
But this thread is full of vile idiots who dont consider any type of immigration or asylum to be valid and call everyone unknowns and illegals like some TR sychophant they would be the 1st to throw a tantrum if their circumstances fell apart. But such are the depths our country has fallen to

This post and saying that this thread is full of vile idiots is what has brought us to the sorry state we are in now.

People shot down, ignored and insulted for saying how they feel …and having a different viewpoint.

Well, that won’t work now. Soz.😁

That works with people who speak up against misinformation about immigration too. They are shot down, ignored, insulted and facts ignored to boot.

Not sure I've seen a more 'stating the obvious' post to be frank.

The poster said 'they are sunk' despite acknowledging that they're finally reading the mood of the country. Isn't what is proposed now what they want?

I don’t know what your first line is referring to but I think it’s pretty obvious that calling people racist, extremist and far right and it’s all culture wars they’ll probably go elsewhere.

Plus the hypocrisy of it.

I think she is right that something has to be done.

I like that she’s looking to Europe for examples. Makes a change to try and learn from other countries.

Quite. I like the fact that Kemi B has proposed they cross party cooperate too..

Let’s hope it’s clicked.

Calling the tolerant-but-outraged voter a racist puts Farage in number 10.

I do too. It won’t get taken up and was there ever a time when a cross party project worked? Wouldn’t it be great if it did though.
