The current state of MN and how do I stop reading?

Westpoint · 11/11/2025 17:18

I actually don't know where to start......

But WTF is happening recently? I mean I know AIBU isn't for the faint of heart but the pile on's have become ridiculous. For the experienced posters the ignore tactic works ok but the vitriol for no bloody reason whatsoever just kills the thread.

Yet I keep on reading?

I have a pretty full life but when I log on I do tend to come here and I'm often left with a really bad taste in my mouth.

Why are people just so combative these days?

I do realise the futility in posting this. Maybe I just need a massive boot up the arse (I'm sure I do).

What do people get from being so nasty?

It actually just makes me really sad. Yes, that's my problem I get it. It's just all so stupid, petty and a waste of everyone's time.

Anyway, that's my rant. Prepared to be unnecessarily flamed (well, I'm not actually, it will hurt my feelings but it's going to happen isn't it? I mean, I could post that puppies are cute and fluffy but some miserable cunt will come along along and tell me that their arse's stink, they shit all over their school run and because they are allergic NO-ONE should enjoy them).

This place really has become a victim of it's own success.

I think I might be out but it's hard to let go. I joined 15 years ago!

Unfortunately, I can’t see Mumsnet surviving in its current form. The initial idea was genius. A safe place for mums to chat about all things family. It was such a great idea and a life saver for women who didn’t have family and friends to support them. The current Mumsnet is not even recognisable. As a pp has said, the place is awash with trolls, bots and ai generated posts. If you call these posts out, your post is deleted. If you report it, nothing happens.

Allswellthatendswelll · 11/11/2025 17:59

Horrible, horrible responses on a thread with a woman with an autistic son who was hurting the baby. I really hope the OP wasn't still reading.

Okiedokie123 · 11/11/2025 18:03

Ooops I forgot to add that yes whilst isn’t what it was….. I’m still drawn to mn like a magnet. And like @Screwyousimon Ive learnt SO much about being an adult, a parent and a woman from MN.

Evergreen505 · 11/11/2025 18:06

I have been away from MN for months.

Today I came back on. The original post might be questionable and was removed but the sentiment here is relevant nonetheless.....The poster presents a situation where they explain how they didn't react as best they could. They've endured endless stress and problems from other mum's. The replies are absolutely awful. Mostly criticism of the posting mum for using a swear word. Are people really losing empathy now or has it always been this way and we just have a platform where these ghouls don't have to pretend to have empathy as they do out there in society. Gross.

So I remember now why I decided to come away from MN and I won't be back on after tonight.

Sandp1p3r · 11/11/2025 18:06

Totally agree. It’s hugely abelist now, it’s treatment of autistic people is just awful.

Posts from mums of Autistic children are the worst threads for me to read and engage in.

The responses from others are usually very much giving away the underlying feelings people have. It's horrible.

Yes,.totally agree. I was involved on a thread about work accommodations and it was pure nastiness.

Thatweegirl · 11/11/2025 18:09

I'm relatively new here, and my observation has been that often (though ironically not on their thread) the first few replies to OPs are horrible, and very combative. It's like people are sitting waiting for a thread to be nasty on.

And also if I disagree with an OP but there are 5 pages of posters already disagreeing with them I just keep my thoughts to myself as I think they will have got the message!

Holluschickie · 11/11/2025 18:11

There are always so many goady posts from the 3 name first time posters. But one can'r troll hunt.
And a lot of racism. By which I don't mean posters who are against uncontrolled immigration or criticise the mistreatment of women.

RatsAss · 11/11/2025 18:12

You should be able to delete your own posts and threads because when the thread just turns into a kicking it’s awful that you as its creator have no agency to remove it.

The ones I loathe are an anxious person posting about something that’s really worrying them and posters just desperate to tell them how pathetic they are for having what is (to them) a very legitimate concern.

I think there are several factors: more actual trolls, more AI posts, more older posters, more plain old intolerant posters, more 'paid' trolls (from UK political parties, PRs but probably also Russians etc) but also a reflection of a more polarised society where someone's skiing plans are as much of a red flag to a bull as someone elses special needs childs' needs.

Why would more older posters make a difference? The posters from the apparantly halcyon days of MN are going to be older posters by now, so surely it would be just as great as ever if their generation were the majority.

GrumpyMuleFan · 11/11/2025 18:14

Totally agree OP. Also home is the humour that shine through so many situations and posts.

HansHolbein · 11/11/2025 18:15

Been here since about 2008. It’s always been a bit spicy. I used to read these threads, the ones saying ‘is it me or has Mumsnet got really nasty’ and disagreed.

But actually, for the first time, I do agree.

With the amount of rampant AI on here (that MN do not give a fuck about), it won’t last long anyway.

proximalhumerous · 11/11/2025 18:15

titchy · 11/11/2025 17:31

Entirely agree. Also the number of troll / bot posts is out of control.

Did the thread with the ridiculous number of apostrophes turn out to be by a troll?

Yorkshireteaandbiscuits · 11/11/2025 18:17

I really do not see how MN can survive in it's current format. There was a time when MN listened - are they now overwhelmed with reports - to be honest I hope so. Some of the politics threads (that run in chat) are very unpleasant places - particularly if you happen to be a female politician. One thread in particular does not allow comments unless you agree with the general consensus of the thread.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 11/11/2025 18:18

DoYouReally · 11/11/2025 17:51

I think there were two lately that were awful.

A lady who had a child after a ONS amd a lady who had a daughter not wanting to do to Disney.

Both came across as normal, rational posters but got massive personal and unwarranted abuse that was bery out of order.

The Disney one was bonkers. The way posters were replying to the OP genuinely shocked me.

I've been on MN for 18 years and it's definitely way more bitchy and less fun these days. I don't know when it changed but I rarely post any more

Chimneyonya · 11/11/2025 18:21

Honestly I’ve always found with Mumsnet that if the first few replies are nasty then everyone follows suit. If the first few replies are measured, then so are the rest of the replies.

I’m more annoyed by the huge amount of AI posts we’re seeing now.

RememberBeKindWithKaren · 11/11/2025 18:22

Yes you've got to be quite brave /desperate in need of help these days.

I asked a really , really general question under the work heading recently on a subject I'd not experienced before and I knew someone would come along and say " if you're paid to manage people, then manage them" and sure enough, a few hours later there it was. its not exactly hurtful, it's just a pointless answer.

Makes you wonder what some people get from writing these things. Must be a kind of superiority but I don't get why anyone needs to feel like that. If someone is asking for help, then you either help or you don't, there's no need to try and put someone in their box. You won't make someone suddenly achieve knowledge or any kind of conclusion by telling them it's obvious.

Jessica167353 · 11/11/2025 18:28

I've only been on MN a few years. It is now the only thing I look at (doom scroll) on my phone. I've managed to get rid of all other social media and I avoid the news now and MN is my outlet. No point in all that really other then to highlight where my phone browsing time is spent. Recently I've delved into Tattle.life. I love the celeb gossip too much. The main thing I've noticed on those threads is that they almost never descend into a pile on of the poster. There is a common hatred and distain for celebs and THEY get a roasting but I think I've only seen one or two posters saying 'I don't agree with you there' in a fairly polite way. Why is that?? How is that site immune to it or is it because all the anger and vitriol is focused on the celebrity instead??

My experience in every single predominantly female work place is that women love to bitch about other women. Maybe this is their outlet now more people work from home 😂

I honestly do find myself thinking 'is this an onslaught of hostile bots' because the posts are SO hostile, immediate and relentless at the moment.

Also: LEAVE HIM LEAVE HIM WHY HAVEN'T YOU ALREADY LEFT HIM GET OUT GO AWAY LEAVE HIM.

I have been moved to tears by the incredible support shown to women getting out of awful situations but this is now the aggressive default statement and if you haven't left your DH of 25 years in 24 hours even though you're broke, scared and have nowhere to go then you will be berated!

This and also people who have been abused by their husbands/partners, there's always 'and you married/had children with this man?', turning the blame on the OP, as if they merrily just wandered into a relationship with a bad 'un.

Also the faux confused people derailing threads by focussing on an error/something not very well explained in the OP. Saw that today in a thread where the OP said it was 20 degrees outside and cold. Queue the head tilt "but 20 degrees Celsius isn't cold" comments.

jackbenimblejackbequick · 11/11/2025 18:32

I’m sure a lot are men who are shit stirring, either for political or misogynistic reasons

Why are older posters more likely to be aggressive? If anything they still have a muscle memory of politeness.

stillavid · 11/11/2025 18:34

I think a big problem is the sheer number of clearly made up posts which then makes people forget that some posters are actually genuine.

I know troll hunting is not allowed but honestly. you report to mn and nothing happens and so many threads are just made up bollocks.

Vodkamartini3olives · 11/11/2025 18:37

@ChimneyonyaI agree, I think there are a lot of posters here that don't go out much, don't have children or a partner and don't see family and friends. So they don't navigate the general annoyances of every day life. That's why they give such ridiculous ott advice. Like LTB because he got the wrong bread from Sainsbury's or cut off your MIL because she gave your kid a biscuit!.
I stick mostly to other topics now. The telly addicts threads are a nice read.
