I’m a female in my 30s.

Thus year I’ve gone down 5 stone from 12.5 stone to 7.5 stone (skinny minny!!)

The way I’ve sing this stick to 1300 calories a day and do one form of exercise a day e.g running for half hour or swimming for half hour or aerobics class.

I’ve also had a crush on a bloke in work and one thing definitely kept me on track with the diet/ exercise plan was saying to myself
“ if I stick to this plan today, I’ll be a bit lighter/fitter when I see John.” / this way of thinking has REALLY helped!! If you haven’t got a ‘John’ as it were, pretend that you do in a figurative sense.

how I stop myself from cheating in the evening is looking at TV programmes I want to watch or magazines/ newspapers I like. And any treats - going to spa at local leisure centre etc - anything that takes my mind away from eating!

Hope this helps at least one person in some way!

Have you moved to maintenance calories now?
You've lost a lot in a small space of time. Well done on the dedication but please be careful of eating disorders.

ArtSandwich · 03/11/2025 17:22

I’d be dead if I lost that much weight!

Are you aware how unlikeable you come across? Genuinely wondering…
(not jealous as I’m also a ‘slim pretty girl’ but just wonder if you have any self-awareness?)

The only one coming across as unlikeable is you.

Tryingatleast · 03/11/2025 17:23

Congratulations op, well done 👍

Yeah, that comment puzzled me. The OP does not seem unlikeable. Strange comment from that poster.

@NadineQueue I'm happy for you if you lost weight that you wanted to lose, and you feel good.

I'm much less happy with the approach you are espousing and your motivation. Losing weight to appeal to a man is a poor idea - John wouldn't like you if you weren't slim? But you might not always be slim - if you gained weight, and John left you, how would you feel then? It sounds like that would be shattering to your self-esteem.

Also, 1300 calories is simply not sustainable and not healthy. Yes, many on MN try to say that it is - it is not. Getting them from convenience foods (not exactly sure what this means) is also a poor health choice. You may be slim, but you may be lacking in essential nutrition and most likely having too much salt / sugar.

I'm honestly not trying to rain on your parade but your advice is worrying.

OP is short though. The number of calories you need depends on your height, weight and activity level.

At 5’1” your maintenance calories will be about 1400-1500 so to lose weight you have to eat less than that.

You need to calculate your TDEE.

MagpiesAreBastards · 03/11/2025 17:30

no John wouldn’t fancy me if I was heavier he goes for slim pretty girls !

oh dear. John sounds very superficial if all he 'goes for' is appearance.

I am also petite and could lose weight easily through exercise and self restraint, not that I ever really needed to. But even in early perimenopause, it still worked. Now, at 53, I am 9 and a bit stone and slightly podgy at 5'2". And living on 1300 or fewer calories a day is simply not sustainable forever.

mondaytosunday · 03/11/2025 17:33

I don’t have a ‘John’ but a holiday next Easter and that keeps me in check. If I get the munchies in the evening I eat pickles. I don’t exercise that much but will as I get lighter and more mobile. Walking is great.

EmeraldRoulette · 03/11/2025 17:33

@NadineQueue what does an average food day looks like?

I'm losing a bit of weight in a very slow and casual way. But I know from experience that 1500 cal is hard. I only managed 1300 when I had an injury and was sat around all day and didn't feel like eating.

JasmineTea11 · 03/11/2025 17:36

Good for you OP, that takes serious dedication and commitment. And the fact you don't have to reply on expensive weight loss drugs is a major bonus. Good luck with John!

AngelsandAliens · 03/11/2025 17:37

well done op I’m dying to lose weight and I want to do so without jabs ! (Nothing against anyone that does but I just can’t risk any side affects )

any chance you could give some meal ideas or what you have been eating ? And snacks ? Please - thank you

Gowlett · 03/11/2025 17:38

I had a “John” in my office days, in my early 30s.
It was all very exciting, and he was a bad boy…
I was gorgeous, skinny & sexy, then. Fair play, OP!

First rule of fight club: women are not allowed to say they're happy with their bodies.

TheHillIsMine · 03/11/2025 17:39

My lover would want me if I was twice the size which doesn't work for motivation as I want to lose weight for me! 😂

CharlieKirkRIP · 03/11/2025 17:40

Well done. Great achievement.

Drachuughtty · 03/11/2025 16:56

Thank you OP! Good tips, will try it

Had you not considered eating less and exercising more before OP's enlightening humble brag post? Or do you mean you'll find a John.

Tamfs · 03/11/2025 17:42

Just a thought, maybe all OP wants to do is fuck John, have a lovely time and move on. In which case, maybe she doesn't really care how shallow he is or what impact her imaginary future pregnancies might have on her imaginary future relationship with John. Maybe getting him into bed was just a lovely focusing motivation for her weight loss.

MorningFresh · 03/11/2025 17:42

BlueEyedBogWitch · 03/11/2025 16:51

Have you shagged John, then?

😆

80smonster · 03/11/2025 17:43

I miss my 30s metabolism. Well done OP. Keeping everything crossed that John tries to jump you soon.

EngineeringSocially · 03/11/2025 17:44

Well done OP. That must have taken a lot of willpower to stick to that diet. I definitely could not have done that and I admire any example of self discipline in others! Hope you manage to keep it off and allow yourself a treat now and again.

Beaverbridge · 03/11/2025 17:44

Well done you!!. I need to follow your lead, well apart from John obvs!!.

frostedpixie · 03/11/2025 17:45

So a reduction in calorie intake. Plus exercise. And a hobby.

Groundbreaking!

DiscoBob · 03/11/2025 17:45

I'd never lose weight for a man.

SingingOcean · 03/11/2025 17:45

Oh god to be in my 30s again!

Make hay whilst the sun shines OP!

SparklyCardigan · 03/11/2025 17:02

Losing weight for a work crush?! Confused I have heard it all now.

Does it matter what the motivation was? Op has achieved her goal and is happy. Why the need to be snidey?
