The racism on the Huntingdon train threads is appaling

Just as the title says. The blatant racism and jumping to conclusions on the threads has been terrible. Mumsnet used to be a more informed intelligent place.

How can politicians make everyone safer?

There have been some horrendous attacks and people would like to see better protection against that.

I don’t know how they can make us safer from acts committed by mentally ill people (which are, luckily) very rare. We will learn as more comes out about Huntington.

Also what we CANNOT do is lump everything together. Gang violence and acts by the mentally ill are very different . People lumping them in together are being lazy and not helping.

There was a thread posted a few weeks ago decrying summer internships that try to improve diversity in some workplaces. The general theme was, ‘My white son can’t get a place so these schemes are bad and need to be abolished’. Do we want people from deprived communities to see these jobs as realistic options, reducing involvement in drug dealing and crime in general, or do we want to keep them as an underclass we can look down on and complain about?

White people live in deprived communities too. Why shouldn’t their white sons (and daughters) have access to internships to help improve their situation?

They should. Diversity isn’t restricted to ethnic diversity. Those schemes try to attract people from more deprived backgrounds too. Those complaining are from more middle class backgrounds. They say the schemes don’t pick up enough white working class boys and favour ethnic minorities so they should be abolished.

So the end result will be the maintenance of the status quo. White middle class people who come from high-achieving backgrounds will get most of the places. Some posters pointing out that there are usually a number of these internship schemes at the companies that offer them didn’t seem to convince these mums that their sons still have sufficient opportunity to get good jobs if they are good enough. You have at least one scheme that’s open to everyone and then others that target specific groups.

The popular one doing the rounds on Social Media this morning is
"If a pig is born in a stable it doesn't make it a horse"
Absolutely vile
My DH was born in another country and has dual nationality but as he is white I am sure the racists would consider him a "horse"

Yeah that disgusting bit of racism has been since since I was a child.

I know - I think this appears to be a case of it. Sadly the conversation will be derailed from that and why - why can’t they simply take their own lives

The tories cut so much funding for mental health help, years long waiting lists and no real tangible help for many.. I wonder if we are beginning to reap the 'rewards' of these ill people being left on their own?

Where will Labour get the money from though? It’s depressing tax hikes and debt servicing billions.

Job losses won’t help either.

I wonder if this will be a wake-up call to the (minority of) black and brown people backing Reform UK. They're going after asylum seekers first, but they don't think you're "one of us" either.

Tax the billionaires, lol.
Perhaps we could save money by stopping the sheer amount of wastage in the UK. So much money is wasted because the way we run things in the UK is poor.

Doubt it - look what happened in the USA and backing Trump.

RingoJuice · 03/11/2025 11:38

JHound · 03/11/2025 11:00

I did. Which is why I know it’s a trope regurgitated from the USA and there is no source for the screenshot. But it is on people to provide source for their claims. Not post misinformation and tell other people to “go look”.

My post was aimed at the person posting a fake screenshot and I asked where it was from. You decided to butt in and did a poor job of it.

The American figure is a real statistic though. I have no idea about the corresponding UK figure. Doubt your government would release such ‘dangerous’ information. As if that fixes anything.

The Metropolitan Police's "Gangs Matrix" (now the Gang Violence Matrix or GVM),

In Oct 2020, it showed 79.5% African-Caribbean, 9.9% White European, 5.1% Asian, and 2.3% Arabian/Egyptian.

This has been fairly consistent since the early 2000s.

That extreme proportion is not explained away by ‘deprivation’. That will play a part but other factors will be in play.

London hosts the largest population of Jamaicans in London. The Yardies and other Jamaican and black drug gangs are known for their violence. We should not be accepting these levels of violence.

The Gangs Violence Matrix isn’t rigorous academic data that considers the limitations of the available data. It’s a tool the police felt was useful but has now been discontinued due to it not being evidence-based:

www.met.police.uk/police-forces/metropolitan-police/areas/about-us/about-the-met/gangs-violence-matrix/

The gangs violence matrix has been discontinued

In October 2022 we committed to the complete redesign of the gangs violence matrix (GVM). We've been considering how it can best make assessments and meet operational challenges. This has been informed by the commissioner’s vision to become more evidence based and data driven in our approach. This is set out in our two year plan A New Met for London.

Some issues with the Gangs Violence Matrix:

Trapped in the Gangs Matrix

Launched by the Met Police in 2012, the Gangs Matrix is a database of suspected gang members in London. It purports to be focused on preventing violence, but it is fundamentally unfit for purpose.

HPFA · 03/11/2025 11:54

A reminder that Ben Habib was on Twitter yesterday saying it was highly suspicious that the police had not released the names of the two suspects, as they didn't want to make the backgrounds of the two men "obvious"

Of the two men accused one has now been found to be innocent and the other has been named as Anthony Williams.

But it's "just asking questions" right?

I didn't know you were referring to a mistake in the title, nor what title you were referring to. I merely asked a question, which you have now answered, but there was no need for you to answer so aggressively! (And why on earth do you think a spelling mistake is such a terrible thing?)

P.S. There shouldn't be an apostrophe in the plural 'highjackings'. I wouldn't have been so petty to point it out but you've set the example.

Even though I'm a pedant I wouldn't generally draw attention to an incorrectly used apostrophe.

Crime actually has gone down over the last 20 years. There’s a couple of people very rich people who’ve grabbed the microphone and are conning people like you Elon Musk Farage we were better than this.

I don’t trust the statisticians I’m afraid. We know they can skew them to read whatever the people in charge want them to say. We also know that data isn’t accurately collected which makes them unreliable. I don’t believe crime has gone down.

Why don't you believe it? You could probably find the raw data and read it for yourself if you wanted facts. I think the statisticians can be trusted but it's in the interpretation and reporting of the data that biases and errors occur.

If you don't believe statistics that show how they're collected and what they're based on, what do you believe? Facebook posts? General vibes?

The exact same can be said of schemes that target girls. The poster you referred to also had an issue with that. You should probably go and find the original post. You are making a fool of yourself. The poster also had an issue with schemes targetting working class people.

I have zero problem with schemes aimed at ethnic minorities for the same reason I have zero issue with schemes aimed at working class people for the same reason I have zero issue with schemes targetting just girls (or even just boys.) I am consistent. You are not.

I’m not sure how being aware of discrimination law means I’m making a fool of myself.

You do know that racial discrimination is unlawful don’t you??

It is lawful to exclude people based on their sex if it is a proportionate means to a legitimate aim. So an initiative to get girls into STEM where they are under represented and face barriers to entry is lawful.

It is lawful to exclude anyone based on the colour of their skin as the RAF found out to their cost. This is quite basic. I would have thought you’d know that by now from being on the feminist boards?
