Racism feels like a broken relationship — except it’s as if all Black, Brown, Jewish, Muslim, immigrant, or “forrin” people are seen as one person. No matter what any individual does, people can’t seem to differentiate.
You can do a thousand good things, but the one bad thing someone from your community does — that’s what gets noticed. That’s what defines everyone else.
There are thousands upon thousands of people from these communities living peacefully, contributing quietly, and doing good every single day. But the focus is on the “crazies” — not the complex geopolitical, historical, mental, or social issues behind them. somehow, the blame always falls on everyone who looks like them.
My best friend’s family fall into three of those categories. She and her husband grew up in Sweden (guess which three!) and now live here for work.
She told me she’s scared to go out on her own. I was shocked to hear that — she’s one of the kindest, gentlest people I know, and both of them work in deeply compassionate professions.
But who cares, right? We’re all “awful” and will never be British — apparently because we carry violence or hatred in our blood, our culture, our history… maybe even our DNA or melanin??
We’re supposedly “poisoning” a British society that was, of course, so peaceful and perfect before us.
You can’t make someone love you if they choose to hate you and only focus on the bad.
If someone’s agenda is hate, they’ll always find something to justify it
