Do any couples sleep in a ‘standard double’ at home.

On a UK holiday and the rather posh accommodation has twin rooms and a double bedroom. The bed is a standard double and I find it utterly impossible for two people to sleep in. Always rolling together or clinging to the edge. I’ve been sleeping on the floor all week which is far more comfortable. We have a super king sized bed at home so this may seem quite princessy but surely no one sleeps in a standard double at home?

We aren’t big people - both underweight - but my goodness the bed is hell.

I couldn’t sleep in a standard double on my own even! Too small!!

JLou08 · 16/10/2025 15:06

I do. DH is overweight too but we manage fine. Sometimes have my 3 yo in the middle too.

Mokeytree · 16/10/2025 15:06

We have a standard double. It's fine.
I don't think I've ever had a house big enough for king sized beds and all furniture to fit properly.

SquashPenguin · 16/10/2025 15:06

I’m the same! We have a Superking and if we go anywhere that has a double bed it’s miserable! How anyone can sleep with another adult in a bed that small is lost on me. A normal kingsize I could tolerate but a double has sleepless night written all over it.

BitterSweetBirthday · 16/10/2025 15:07

Of course people sleep in a standard double!!!
I don't know any couples who don't !!!

Are you really tall? I can comfortably star fish in a double.

That's quite an extreme statement unless you are joking

EverardDeTroyes · 16/10/2025 15:08

Yup, we do. I'd quite like a larger bed but our bed is an antique that has been in my family for over 65 years so I'm not just going to replace it. Neither dh nor I struggle to fit into our bed.

MoonBugs · 16/10/2025 15:08

Yes we have a standard double, dh is extremely tall, and we usually have our three year old in the middle with us too at some point in the night.
It’s fine.

Lovelynames123 · 16/10/2025 15:08

I downgraded from a kingsize to a double when I moved as I gave my daughter the bigger room, it's absolutely fine for just me but if I ever meet another man I'd definitely want to upgrade again!

childofthe607080s · 16/10/2025 15:08

We have a standard double but don’t suffer feom rolling or clinging as you described

we are both quite slim /light which might make a difference and also have a decent mattress - because of my habit of rolling out of bed we need one that keeps some shape or I end up bruised

Shamrockshirley · 16/10/2025 15:09

Maybe it’s partly the mattress that’s the issue. Were memory foam at home which I find more comfortable too.

We don't have room for more at the moment. It works fine.

Pinkcherry26 · 16/10/2025 15:09

We have a standard double, it's fine. 30 grass ago we slept ok together in a single but we have both put on a few lb since then...

It's just what you are used to. We do have a king size duvet to avoid fighting though!

Adooree · 16/10/2025 15:10

Yes and our next will be a king as minimum .

Dangitydang · 16/10/2025 15:11

It's not a double. That's what bothers me the most. The public accepted a lie!

PastaAllaNorma · 16/10/2025 15:11

God, no, haven't had a double since I was about 25. King, always.

ShodAndShadySenators · 16/10/2025 15:12

Yes, we do and it's absolutely fine. We don't roll together or fall out of bed or hang on to the edge. If we were crammed into a single, I could see that happening. But not a double. We are under average height wise and not really overweight. It's great because we are rarely put out about beds in hotels/accommodation.

We do have a king size duvet on that and this is marvellous, loads of duvet all round.

Strollingby · 16/10/2025 15:12

Standard double at home, no problem for us both.
Currently away with. Super king sized and find it very strange.

Deadringer · 16/10/2025 15:12

We have a double and its fine. Neither of us is tall but I am quite fat. If we buy a new one we will probably go for a king, any bigger that that and the bed linen is a faff to wash and dry imo, it's expensive too.

Imagine if our grandparents and great grandparents who lived through world wars and sheltered underground at night as they were bombed could read this thread.

Sal820 · 16/10/2025 15:13

It's probably a awful mattress.

Plantlady10 · 16/10/2025 15:13

We have a king size but usually end up with a couple of kids in the bed - a standard double to ourselves would feel like plenty of room but I suppose it depends what you are used to!

Mate. Top marks for misery olympics there

YouMightLikeCats · 16/10/2025 15:15

There was a recent thread about double vs king bed in a holiday let.

Lots of people assuming that you'd only need a King for extra width because only fatties need more space than a double and they fit perfectly fine with their partner on a double so why on Earth would anyone require more space?

The repeated pointing out that it also has extra length for people who are taller than average, or that some people like having a bit of extra space, was poo-pooed... Grin

Give me as big a bed as possible please! My (skinny) OH's feet hang off a King, let alone a Double.
