Do any couples sleep in a ‘standard double’ at home.

On a UK holiday and the rather posh accommodation has twin rooms and a double bedroom. The bed is a standard double and I find it utterly impossible for two people to sleep in. Always rolling together or clinging to the edge. I’ve been sleeping on the floor all week which is far more comfortable. We have a super king sized bed at home so this may seem quite princessy but surely no one sleeps in a standard double at home?

We aren’t big people - both underweight - but my goodness the bed is hell.

Every couple I know minus one , sleep in a double. Again if you are of average weight I guess, so maybe your size, (weight and height plays a part)

Well I know both my DDs sleep in doubles as given them sheets etc as gifts

JohnBullshit · 16/10/2025 16:16

I love a king sized bed in hotels, but we manage fine in a standard double at home. DH is pretty tall, and we could both lose a few pounds. We have a very good mattress, which helps.

Are you usually this rude to complete strangers? Or was it a ”joke” for one?

Somebody hasn't had their weetabix this morning, I was joking, banter on your coding in a bed (also jokey) comment.

Yes all the normal people as opposed to the normal for mumsnet people with 15 enormous bedrooms and an ensuite per child.

In the real world standard doubles outsell larger doubles.

So you've slept in a superking for a week, have space for one, and wouldn't choose a bigger bed?

Is that right?

We slept in a superking for over a year when we had to live in a rented property while we had some work done. Moving back into a standard double wasn’t the wrench I thought it would be. We’d go up to King if we had space but I couldn’t be bothered with changing the bedding on a Super, not to mention it having to go in the machine in two separate washes because it didn’t all fit in together. Too much of a faff.

TheDandyLion · 16/10/2025 16:19

We've put up with one for about 10 years now as it's all we could afford at the time but we're getting a new one soon after we move house so we're upgrading to a super king. It's going to be bliss.

To be young and in love. Now if his arm even touches my side 😡😂

Same here 😅😅

BubblyBath178 · 16/10/2025 16:20

We changed from a standard to a superking about 4 years ago, haven’t looked back. A standard double seems tiny now.

FlexiSadie · 16/10/2025 16:20

We have a standard double. My husband is normal-size but I'm a fatty. Sometimes our five-year-old joins us too, although that is admittedly a bit of a squeeze. I like being near my husband.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 16/10/2025 16:21

We have one but our bedroom isn't really big enough for more than that. I love it when we go away and have a bigger bed though!

BeLilacSloth · 16/10/2025 16:21

I sleep in a king but have slept in standard doubles in hotels, absolutely fine. The need to sleep on the floor suggests you are in fact not underweight.

VeryQuaintIrene · 16/10/2025 16:21

We do (both women but far from tiny.) We are both edge of bed side sleepers, which helps, and actually I hate kingsizes because they are just too big for me.

Yep – slept in all kids of huge beds at family houses, hotels and holiday rentals. I don't find any difference in comfort or sleep, so see no need for one. I find it very strange how people can't compute that people simply feel differently about some things.

Hankunamatata · 16/10/2025 16:22

You just described why I hate going away at times. Always bloody double bed. Myself and dh have king-size. In a double I get no sleep at all (and probably the not great mattress which is more noticeable when you share a bed) I always preferred to sleep alone as im such a light sleeper.

3catsandcounting · 16/10/2025 16:22

We had a standard double for 30 years, and it
was never a problem, even with a
tall husband. We bought a new
bed recently, and as a kingsize would only be 6 inches wider than the double, we
went for a Superking. Haven’t really seen husband since! 😂

ThejoyofNC · 16/10/2025 16:23

Swiftie1878 · 16/10/2025 15:06

I couldn’t sleep in a standard double on my own even! Too small!!

Is this supposed to be a joke?

NeedWineNow · 16/10/2025 16:24

We've got a double and never had any problems. In fact it we've got a bigger bed when we're away we find it quite strange!

I'm tempted to get a king sized duvet though, because we've got a metal framed bed and you can see the storage boxes tucked underneath. I think a king sized duvet would hide them.

BarnacleBeasley · 16/10/2025 16:27

DP and I are both petite women but we used to disturb each other a lot when sleeping in a standard double. It was mostly fine, but if one of us had a cold and was snoring more than usual, or was having trouble sleeping anyway, then it just didn't work and one of us would end up sleeping in the spare room for a bit. When we had DC2 and lost our spare room, we got a superking and it's transformed our sleep. Also, if you want to be closer together, you can just move into the middle!

UnctuousUnicorns · 16/10/2025 16:27

We do, perfectly comfortably. DH 5' 9", me 5' 0" , both average build. Obviously I don't know what it would be like if either or both of us were taller and/or heavier.

Exactly how dh, and I feel. You have the option to have the space if needed, without vacating the room entirely.

BashfulClam · 16/10/2025 16:30

We upgraded to a superking. Fantastic, it’s like sleeping in different postcodes and it’s great for bedroom shenanigans.

CallBackPlease · 16/10/2025 16:30

Never had a king size and we are in our fifties. Both slim and happy with the double bed. The snoring, not so much…

Lulu1919 · 16/10/2025 16:31

I won't book accommodation that has a basic double bed !

SwarmsofLadybirds · 16/10/2025 16:31

BruFord · 16/10/2025 15:18

It wouldn’t suit us. I don’t like being too close to anyone when I’m sleeping, not even feet touching! We have a queen. We’ve slept in a kings in hotels and they’re huge, DH didn’t like it. He’s more of a snuggler than me though.

Isn't a queen a small double?

PinkCherryPie · 16/10/2025 16:35

I couldn't cope in anything smaller than a king. I regret not putting my foot down more for the super king I wanted but was told we didn't need.

I also don't know why we all sleep under the same duvet. We have had one each since the days of co-sleeping and will never go back to sharing one.
