Do any couples sleep in a ‘standard double’ at home.

On a UK holiday and the rather posh accommodation has twin rooms and a double bedroom. The bed is a standard double and I find it utterly impossible for two people to sleep in. Always rolling together or clinging to the edge. I’ve been sleeping on the floor all week which is far more comfortable. We have a super king sized bed at home so this may seem quite princessy but surely no one sleeps in a standard double at home?

We aren’t big people - both underweight - but my goodness the bed is hell.

my partner is really tall and i am quite large and we have always managed in a double bed with no problems, i feel too far apart in anything bigger

No!

The only people that sleep in doubles by choice are those that can fit a bigger bed or haven't had a week in a superking.

Umm, what? ... categorically untrue

Of course couples sleep in standard double! beds!!
I don't know of any couples who don't in my family.

BruFord · 16/10/2025 15:23

I’d actually prefer to sleep in my own bed. It’s nothing to do with not liking DH, it’s because I’m not the best sleeper and I think it might help. Plus I sometimes want to read when he’s ready to sleep.

But he does his big eyes, I’m so hurt face if I suggest it. 😂

Sweetleftfood · 16/10/2025 15:24

We do and had the youngest in there for a long time most nights. He has now been replaced by a medium sized dog. I don't find it too small actually but if we were to buy a new one I would probably get a slightly bigger one

pumpkinscake · 16/10/2025 15:24

Had one for 20 years of marriage, was fine. Love my super king now though

ainsleysanob · 16/10/2025 15:25

Yes, we do! Always have!

Fizbosshoes · 16/10/2025 15:25

We've always had a double bed and when DC were young there were often had 3 in the bed. I am short, DH is average

I do really enjoy sleeping in a K/S bed in a hotel or holiday accomodation ....but not yet enough to go to the expense of changing bed, mattress and bedding...and i think i would really hate ironing KS bedding

My teen DD had a double bed at home, but single at uni. DS (16) still has a single and probably sleeps better than anyone else!

GasPanic · 16/10/2025 15:25

Are you talking a standard double ?

I thought this place was full of people who could never sleep in a bed unless it was Super Caeser size.

TheatricalLife · 16/10/2025 15:27

We do. Absolutely no problems here with space.
That said, I'd love a super king, but living in a 300 year old house with two weird, windy staircases, I don't think I'm getting one up those unfortunately!

timeoxo · 16/10/2025 15:28

I have a king size bed all to myself.
I sleep like a star fish roll around bliss.

cornbunting · 16/10/2025 15:28

Standard double here. There wouldn't be much floor space in our bedroom with a bigger bed. But then DH and I have been known to spend a couple of weeks sharing a single bed, we're clearly not fussy 😂

PositiveLife · 16/10/2025 15:28

I've always just had a standard double. In the current house there isn't really space for anything bigger due to the room shape, but previous houses had more space.

I don't find it an issue.

cherrytree12345 · 16/10/2025 15:29

Standard double for us, but the duvet is king size

It's a bit odd that you'd know this. I know lots of couples and have no idea about the size of their bed!

mamagogo1 · 16/10/2025 15:33

I did until I met dh, no issues at all with my exh but neither of us are tall. Dh had a king size when I met him for the length because he’s over 6’

Ours came disassembled and most the individual pieces weren't much bigger than a standard double, though the headboard might be an issue depending on design.

blankcanvas3 · 16/10/2025 15:34

Superking here because we have 2 wriggly DDs in with us most of the time

Haha, "Hi Sara, how big is yours and Steve's bed again." Who does this?

Imagine if our grandparents and great grandparents who lived through world wars and sheltered underground at night as they were bombed could read this thread.

My late DM and her family lived in the East End of London during the Blitz.
They had an underground shelter dug in the garden, an Anderson shelter. This was a very basic earth lined tunnel about six feet deep with steps going down into it and a corrugated iron cover/roof. It was still there in the 60s/70s.
During the bombing they preferred to take their chances in the house, (on the ground floor of a four storey house) under the kitchen table.
A bomb did land fairly close, blowing out the windows and causing other fairly minor damage.
She and my DF had a king-size bed.

We have a standard double. It's fine.
I don't think I've ever had a house big enough for king sized beds and all furniture to fit properly.

Me too. We stayed in a swanky hotel in Bath with a super king bed - we used more code to communicate - it was huge. Prefer a smaller bed that doesn’t overly dominate the room. We have plenty of room in bed and we prefer it

BauhausOfEliott · 16/10/2025 15:37

Sleep in whatever bed works for you and/ or is suitable size for your bedroom. We have a standard double. A king size would have taken up way too much space in the bedroom at our old house, and when we moved to a bigger place we just brought the bed with us. We'd have room for a king or a super-king in our bedroom now, but neither of has any problem sleeping in the bed we've got.

Odd that anyone would think 'nobody' does or 'could' sleep in a different size bed to their own. I hate soft mattresses and I also hate memory foam, but I don't have any dramatic difficulty in understanding that other people might like them.

anniegun · 16/10/2025 15:38

two thirds of bed sales are doubles versus larger sizes

Same. When I had a single bed, I used a double duvet
