Do any couples sleep in a ‘standard double’ at home.

On a UK holiday and the rather posh accommodation has twin rooms and a double bedroom. The bed is a standard double and I find it utterly impossible for two people to sleep in. Always rolling together or clinging to the edge. I’ve been sleeping on the floor all week which is far more comfortable. We have a super king sized bed at home so this may seem quite princessy but surely no one sleeps in a standard double at home?

We aren’t big people - both underweight - but my goodness the bed is hell.

We sleep in a normal standard double but use a king size duvet! Whilst it's nice in a bigger bed when we're away at a 'posh' hotel I miss being close to my hubby! We sleep in a smaller bed in our motorhome! We're not cuddlers over night but we do like to be close!

Ilovesunandsnow · 19/10/2025 17:40

But you can still cuddle up close in a superking 😂

Just room for more people 😀.

We started off married life with a double bed then progressed to a Superking (with separate single duvets each - continental style), went on to 2 separate single beds and now have a small double bed each (in the same room). We both love having a bed each, we are still 'active' but find with our progressing years and aches & pains this suits us better as we don't disturb one another in the night - bliss. When we travel we always book twin beds.

Standard double at home, no problem for us both.
Currently away with. Super king sized and find it very strange.

Yes they are the weirdest. We had Superkings on our honeymoon. I kept waking up thinking DH had changed his mind and left me, as I could starfish and not even touch him. Grin

How though? This is what I don’t get!
if I stretch my arms out at right angles to my body I can touch the edges of the mattress, it’s not like I won’t notice another person in there

Yes I can't make sense of this either.

I have a superking and I’m considering downsizing to a kingsize simply because it takes forever changing the bedding, not to mention how much more expensive bedding is for superking. But I’d never go smaller than a kingsize as a double is simply too small for two normal sized adults to stretch out in properly.

Have you thought about putting 2 single duvets on the bed? The way they do on the continent (Germany do this), we used to have a Superking but preferred having our own single duvets - no losing your duvet when your partner turns over and easier to make and cheaper to buy the bedding.

Actually, it’s funny you said that as it dawned on me after posting on here that I should go the Continental route. I can’t understand why I didn’t think of it sooner , especially as I’ve always loved how they make their beds especially in Austria and Switzerland. Besides the two separate duvets they use, they’re always so,, so light — like a weightless fluffy cloud. I’ve actually got a pure down super-king duvet as I adore how light they are but it cost a a fortune — which is another reason I was considering downsizing to a King — but now you’ve suggested the Continental method I will try that instead. Thank you for reminding me 😊

We sleep in separate rooms in our own doubles. Its brilliant,we both get to actually sleep and it does not damage the relationship in any way,in fact if you think about it theres no stealing the covers or being kept awake with snoring, being too hot or whatever. Even on holiday we book somewhere with two bedrooms. So no need for king size for us.

lilkitten · 21/10/2025 11:49

Try a small double 😅At the home I share with one partner we have a standard double, and there's plenty of space for us to not be in each other's way or get close to the edge; but my other partner has a small double as his original bedroom was narrow. That is a squeeze, though we can get enough space by being careful. All three of us are average build, not overweight. BTW it's only two in a bed 😂but I've slept in king size on holiday and probably could fit an extra person in the gap.

Blondeshavemorefun · 21/10/2025 13:33

I am amazed that so many people don’t have room for an extra 6inchs in a bedroom from double to king

I’m amazed that people find an extra six inches makes so much difference! 😂

We’re getting an emperor size next (200x200), currently in a king. I’m 4’10”, hubby is 6’4” neither overweight but 1 year old in the middle. The extra 50cm will be lovely!

An emporer is the same length as a super-king and king. The only difference is an emporer is square and 6 inches wider than a superking. I almost ordered an emporer when I replaced my bed a 7 years ago and am I glad I didn’t! I do so many steps around my bed when changing the bedding by the time I’ve finished doing it I feel like I’ve been exercising.

I also have to spend so much money on sheets/pillowcases/duvet covers etc. And that’s without buying the kingsize pillows which are absolutely necessary, otherwise your bed looks weird. I’m embarrassed to say how much my pillows alone cost but I’ve seen beds online cheaper than one of my pillows 🫣 I might sound like a bed freak but it’s just something I feel is essential to health and a good sleep. And on the subject of beds I’d never in a million years have a slatted base, and God forbid I had to sleep on memory foam. I slept in one once and felt like I was cooking in the oven. I have a proper sprung divan base and the base is so, so important to the bed. Many people think the mattress alone is the most important but it’s the mattress AND the base that are equally essential to a comfortable bed. My mattress is sprung too, and weighs a tonne. No way could I lift it alone. It is beautiful to lay on as I went for the soft mattress (I hate firm ones) and it’s a fallacy firm ones are good for your back — they’re not.

I know some people would hark at spending thousands on a bed yet they’ll happily spend thousands and thousands on a car they may only sit in for a few hours a week. You spend a third of your life in bed so to my mind its an important investment.

Well on penis size an extra 6inches may be too much 😂😂

i have spent the last 3 nights on holiday with a double

slept badly. Looking forward to my king

EmmaInScotland · 22/10/2025 23:43

I’ve chuckled through this, at home, Kingsize - with 2 duvets Austrian style; caravan - we went for one with twin beds (2’ 4” wide), as doubles in caravans narrow & often against the wall.
Holiday - preferences are King or bigger, then twins - but double if place looks particular good / interesting / etc I.e doable, if there’s a good reason

Baublebonkers · 31/10/2025 02:44

Sorry but I just can’t take this seriously

BambinaCucina · 31/10/2025 12:07

We have a king at home and a small double when we visit my parents.

It's not a great sleep in the small double, but we did OK in the normal double that we had previously. It's difficult to go back when you're used to the bigger bed.

We don't! Unless we got rid of bedside tables, which are the smallest possible as it is.
We have only had a double, and I'm not slim by any means. We find it fine, do enjoy it when we have bigger beds on some holidays but doesn't make us think we need to change! And we aren't cuddly sleepers either

Susiblues · 02/03/2026 16:27

My DP sleeps with his hands under his head so elbows out and when we’ve tried sleeping in a double we don’t succeed. We have a Superking at home and enjoy the space

Superkings are made for 3 people 😆.

I know plenty of couples who sleep in a standard double.
A lot of people don't have bedrooms big enough/stairs wide enough etc, to accommodate anything larger.

dynamiccactus · 02/03/2026 17:03

Yes we have a standard double, and no, we can't fit a bigger bed in. Many houses in the UK have ridiculously small bedrooms. And in our case the door is in an awkward place which means we couldn't have a wider bed.

Hotels are lovely when they have king and superking beds.

Fortunately neither DH nor I are very big people.

Mslongears · 02/03/2026 19:33

Me and OH did until our toddler decided he wanted in as well. So now I'm in my own double and the two share theirs 😂 We figured with another baby on the way there was no way we were getting away with 4 of us in a small double!! It was a squeeze for two.
