Do any couples sleep in a ‘standard double’ at home.

On a UK holiday and the rather posh accommodation has twin rooms and a double bedroom. The bed is a standard double and I find it utterly impossible for two people to sleep in. Always rolling together or clinging to the edge. I’ve been sleeping on the floor all week which is far more comfortable. We have a super king sized bed at home so this may seem quite princessy but surely no one sleeps in a standard double at home?

We aren’t big people - both underweight - but my goodness the bed is hell.

Haha, "Hi Sara, how big is yours and Steve's bed again." Who does this?

No no, you're supposed to refer to your friends by their bed size.

"We're having golf with Queen-Size-Karen-and-Kevin this weekend. Oh yes, the King-Size-Johnsons were supposed to be joining us but they're divorcing, so now they're Bunk Bed Barbara and Sofabed Steve".

Me too. We stayed in a swanky hotel in Bath with a super king bed - we used more code to communicate - it was huge. Prefer a smaller bed that doesn’t overly dominate the room. We have plenty of room in bed and we prefer it

Are you from "Honey I shrunk the kids adults?"

two thirds of bed sales are doubles versus larger sizes

Not much of a surprise, they’re cheaper and many will also be sold to single people or couples who sleep separately.

Are you usually this rude to complete strangers? Or was it a ”joke” for one?

18KTguy · 16/10/2025 15:40

Every couple I know minus one , sleep in a double. Again if you are of average weight I guess, so maybe your size, (weight and height plays a part)

We have a double and its fine. Neither of us is tall but I am quite fat. If we buy a new one we will probably go for a king, any bigger that that and the bed linen is a faff to wash and dry imo, it's expensive too.

We have super king frame which takes two single mattresses. So it's single fitted sheets and I can turn the mattresses over on my own.

spoonbillstretford · 16/10/2025 15:41

DH is overweight, I'm quite slim, but we are ok in a standard double when away, though we have a king size at home. It depends on the mattress. Sometimes when he gets in I get bounced or roll into the middle but with a good mattress it doesn't matter.

Gingercar · 16/10/2025 15:41

We had a small double for 18 years. I’m fat and my husband is 6’4. Only became a problem when I hit menopause! We now have a king and I love it. We’re going to do B&B soon and will definitely put king size beds in for guests.

ClassicBBQ · 16/10/2025 15:42

We have a superking at home and we really struggle to sleep in a standard double on holiday. I feel as though I can barely move without falling out and I'm always freezing because the cover is so tiny!

Nocookiesforme · 16/10/2025 15:43

Bloody hell - this has given the biggest laugh today!!!!
Me and my DP have a standard double and we manage even though neither of us is small - plus we often have to make room for the cats too.
We actually see a king size as a luxury if we stay away and are never bothered if it's a double bed. The mattress quality is what bothers us most. If it's a bad mattress then we won't sleep regardless of the bed size.
I find myself rather bemused by this post tbh 🤔

spoonbillstretford · 16/10/2025 15:44

Also at home we have two coverless double duvets on the kingside bed, folded lengthways when not in bed, so it looks a bit like two single beds pushed together. We enjoyed that arrangement in Croatia one summer and adopted it at home! So you can decide whether to throw the duvet off or wrap it around you like a sausage and no fighting over it!

We do and had the youngest in there for a long time most nights. He has now been replaced by a medium sized dog. I don't find it too small actually but if we were to buy a new one I would probably get a slightly bigger one

My kind of swap!

FeliciaFancybottom · 16/10/2025 15:45

The bigger the better at bedtime as far as I'm concerned!

poetryandwine · 16/10/2025 15:45

We have been in a standard double with a lovely antique frame for our whole long marriage. I enjoy spending time in a larger bed when travelling but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Like a couple of PP we have a king duvet, though

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 16/10/2025 15:46

I think you’re exaggerating a bit. I’m 5’7, DH is 5’10 and quite overweight, and we sleep just fine in a standard double, with a spaniel inbetween us!

ZZGirl · 16/10/2025 15:46

Yes, my bed is a normal bogstandard double.

PuggyPuggyPuggy · 16/10/2025 15:46

BlindSpotForCats · 16/10/2025 15:20

Superking here.

Bought mainly so the various cats could sleep with us.

However- it does not matter how big a bed is- one cat usually manages to take up half of it.

I often find myself clinging to the edge of the (standard double) bed sharing with a single pug 😆

Rewis · 16/10/2025 15:47

My bf has a standard double and we sleep in that together. Mine is 180cm wide and I do prefere that. I don't know how we fitted into a single bed when we started dating.

Catsknowbest · 16/10/2025 15:50

We do. We have 2 standard doubles. On 3/4 nights before work due to husband's health conditions I sleep on my own but on the remaining nights we manage fine together.

Bitzee · 16/10/2025 15:50

We have a Cal King. Doubles are children’s beds IMO. Both of my kids have had them since they outgrew the cotbed. Everyone I know well enough to be privy to their bedroom arrangements the couples have king size or bigger and all kids over 5 have a small double or double.

Aha because perhaps size didn't matter 😅

LillyPJ · 16/10/2025 15:51

I sleep in a standard double with my DP. It's no problem at all, even though he's on the large size. I did use a king-size duvet for a while in order to avoid draughts but changing the cover was a nightmare so I've gone back to a double duvet too.

CheeseWisely · 16/10/2025 15:52

Yes we do. Can’t fit a bigger bed in the bedroom until we move. It’s fine. In fact we shared a small double when he first moved in with me (I chose floorspace over bed space when I lived alone).

Blappengrap · 16/10/2025 15:53

We have a standard double and we have shared it with our children when they were little, at some points with four of us in it. It's plenty big enough. We use a king size duvet.

OP I think you are being melodramatic sleeping on the floor!

PrioritisePleasure24 · 16/10/2025 15:54

Yeah we do. It’s fine. It’s fun on holiday when we get a king or queen bed. We feel so far away from each other.
