Do any couples sleep in a ‘standard double’ at home.

On a UK holiday and the rather posh accommodation has twin rooms and a double bedroom. The bed is a standard double and I find it utterly impossible for two people to sleep in. Always rolling together or clinging to the edge. I’ve been sleeping on the floor all week which is far more comfortable. We have a super king sized bed at home so this may seem quite princessy but surely no one sleeps in a standard double at home?

We aren’t big people - both underweight - but my goodness the bed is hell.

Nope, wouldn't be able to sleep.

soundsofthevalley · 16/10/2025 15:54

Oh my God no! We always check bed sizes, and would book twins in preference to small double. At least you’re not rolling in a heap and have some space.

summerlovingvibes · 16/10/2025 15:54

Standard double here and my DH is on the rather large side....
we manage.
I would like a king though...

moleeye · 16/10/2025 15:57

Nope

I will only book accommodation that has at a minimum a king size. We have a super king at home, this is a non negotiable for me!

Sesma · 16/10/2025 15:57

We sleep in separate double beds, I don't like sharing, same room though

RobertaFirmino · 16/10/2025 15:57

Standard double here, no issues at all. I'm 5'7, DH is 6'2 and we are both slim.

@soundsofthevalley I actually wouldn’t mind two twins in a setup like those old 1930’s/40’s films. It would remind me of when we were first together crammed into a single…except DH could bugger off when we were ready to sleep. 😉

Imagine if our grandparents and great grandparents who lived through world wars and sheltered underground at night as they were bombed could read this thread.

🤣 I know.

SparklyGlitterballs · 16/10/2025 16:00

I've got a king size to myself (widowed) but I still end up down the edge because my dachshund, despite being small, hogs the middle of it.

Now waiting for all the people who will say how disgusting to allow my dog on the bed 🤣

JaninaDuszejko · 16/10/2025 16:00

The advantage of having a double at home is that you cope fine with a double when away and enjoy having more space if you get a bigger bed. TBH DH and I slept together in single beds for the first three or four years of our relationship when we were students (we're both small) so a double feels spacious.

WearyAuldWumman · 16/10/2025 16:03

My late husband and I did, and we were both quite big. Mind you, we liked to snuggle.

Greeneyegirl · 16/10/2025 16:03

Yup we do but I do wish we had a bigger one

Canadanny · 16/10/2025 16:03

standard double for us!

MarketSt · 16/10/2025 16:04

We used to in our old place as bedroom was small.

Now have a king and when we had a weekend break earlier in the year the double (old place in Ireland) felt small!

Have room for a Super King at home but we didn’t want to ruin any holiday king sized beds for ourselves. 🤣

BoringBarbie · 16/10/2025 16:07

Yes we sleep in a double bed. Admittedly we had to kick out my daughter when she was 3-ish as it is definitely too small for 3, but it is designed for 2. Neither of us are overweight but we fitted fine when I was 9 months pregnant and when bedsharing with a baby.

Smiling2022 · 16/10/2025 16:07

Super king size for us (6' 2" stocky husband and me tall too), my sister & husband have a super king size, and my parents in their 80's have a king size bed.
I just couldn't sleep in a double as need space.
When booking a holiday in the UK or abroad the bed size is one of the first things we check.

Are you talking a standard double ?

I thought this place was full of people who could never sleep in a bed unless it was Super Caeser size.

Depends. If an OP posted "surely a double is fine for most people?" then the thread will be full of people saying "no way, too small, I could never!'

But if the OP posted "surely most people wouls opt for a King/ Super King given the choice?" then the thread will be full of people saying "how ridiculous; everyone I know sleeps in a Double and wouldn't consider anything else!"

cantkeepawayforever · 16/10/2025 16:08

Standard double.

Both DCs had standard singles until they left home for uni, too. Their rooms have a small double & a standard double now.

searchforthesun · 16/10/2025 16:10

@Dangitydang 😂

AllJoyAndNoFun · 16/10/2025 16:11

I think it’s just what you’re used to. When I was at Uni I’d sleep in a single with my Bf of the month and we’d sleep fine. Not sure I’d go to that extreme now but I’m not a fidgety sleeper so reckon I could do a double with DH.

Imperfectpolly · 16/10/2025 16:11

We have super king at home and also really struggled on a recent trip where there was a tiny double. After struggling the first night, we went and bought an airbed and one of us slept in the bed, while the other took the airbed.

cantkeepawayforever · 16/10/2025 16:12

(It strikes me that as a family we have only ever owned 5 bed frames, plus 1 cot:

  • Our double, as old as our marriage
  • Cot
  • 2x single beds, used by DC from when they left the cot to when they left home
  • 1 new double + 1 small double, bought in the last few years)
BaconCheeses · 16/10/2025 16:13

Didimum · 16/10/2025 15:22

The only people that sleep in doubles by choice are those that can fit a bigger bed or haven't had a week in a superking.

Umm, what? ... categorically untrue

So you've slept in a superking for a week, have space for one, and wouldn't choose a bigger bed?

Is that right?

Toucanfusingforme · 16/10/2025 16:15

Tall husband, standard double, no issues. And cosy in winter. When staying in a king size we refer to it as sleeping in different postcodes it feels so far apart.

Catsknowbest · 16/10/2025 15:50

Aha because perhaps size didn't matter 😅

To be young and in love. Now if his arm even touches my side 😡😂
