Beauty appointment and toilet

I’m sure most people will say I AM being unreasonable here because I’m a grown adult who should be able to hold my bladder but here we go…

I’ve been going to a lady for about 3 years now for beauty services, she normally does my brows, lashes, nails & toes, generally my appointments are 3-3.5 hours. She operates out of her house and must be busy as she always makes out she has lots of clients. Anyway; today was my first appointment after having my baby 12 weeks ago so my bladder is not what it used to be after child birth. She made me a coffee as she always does. She did my nails and toes and I said “before you start my brows and lashes can I use your loo please?” She said “no it’s not clean up there I wasn’t expecting anyone to use it”, I didn’t say anything and then let her do my brows, by this point I was getting really desperate and told her I was going to have to nip to a nearby supermarket to use the toilet and come back, she said if I did that she wouldn’t be able to do my lashes due to time but I’d still have to pay for them as that’s what I’d booked. I knew I couldn’t wait so I paid, left without having my lashes done and went to Tesco 5 minutes away. I really like her and I love the way she does my brows but this has got me questioning whether I should go back? I’ve had treatments done at other peoples homes before and they’ve always offered me use of the toilet…

posting for a friend who doesn’t have mumsnet

I find it weird she wouldn't let you use the toilet, but reasonable to have to pay for the treatment if leaving part way through.

Oh yes absolutely. My friend is not disputing paying for it, she would have been out of money else. The toilet thing I do find odd.

She could have quickly cleaned and flushed a toilet if necessary.I wouldn't go back, she should be able to provide basic amenities if she's running a business.

SomeOtherUser · 15/10/2025 22:01

I think she was extremely ungracious on both counts. How messy could it have been up there?!

Strawberry53 · 15/10/2025 22:01

You are not being unreasonable in the slightest that is completely bonkers she wouldn’t let you use her toilet! Completely understandable that you’d need access to a toilet especially for an appointment that long! I get my nails done at somebodies home as well and we are welcome to use the loo and it’s always kept spotless because of that. Perhaps you could message her with some feedback before deciding never to go back? See if she listens? But if you aren’t allowed to use the loo there that would be a dealbreaker for me as I wouldn’t be able to relax during my appointment.

That’s exactly my thoughts. I always expect anyone who’s in my house to need to use the loo and therefore make sure it’s presentable!

????? Not of her own choice!! She just needed a wee!! And no, I would never go back ever again. Its not reasonable to expect a client not to need the loo in almost 4 hours! Its really unhealthy.

Evaka · 15/10/2025 22:02

Bizarre of her. I wouldn't go back.

ValenciaOrange · 15/10/2025 22:02

If she's running her business from home then she should expect people may need the bathroom and make sure its clean ! It was a perfectly reasonable request you made.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 15/10/2025 22:02

If she's offering appointments to the public then she needs to be offering a toilet. I've got pretty good bladder control but I couldn't go that length of time without a wee.

Id find a professional salon for future treatments

youalright · 15/10/2025 22:02

Yanbu she firstly should expect a client may need the toilet but if she didn't she could of said yeah just give me 2 minutes to check it

JustReacher · 15/10/2025 22:03

Go elsewhere, it’s bizarre! 3.5 hours, no way!

Strawberry53 · 15/10/2025 22:04

Sorry I’ve just re read that she made you pay for the lashes even though you didn’t get them because of the loo situation! That’s outrageous and I wouldn’t go back at all based on that.

ny20005 · 15/10/2025 22:05

How odd. My beautician set up in her own home & had to provide a loo & sink. I think it was to do with the council application

i wouldn’t go back to be honest. 3 years & it’s a long appointment. Find someone else

Hankunamatata · 15/10/2025 22:06

I have bladder issues so I would need to use the bathroom.

I think she was totally unreasonable to not let you use the bathroom and charge you for the lashes. It was her fault for not letting you take a wee that would have taken less than 5 mins

This ^
even if it was 30 minutes appointment people might want to go to toilet so she was very rude not to allow you using her toilet.
I wouldn’t want to pay for lashes as you left early because she didn’t allow you to use her toilet.
I wouldn’t come back and I would tell everyone why.

AngelofIslington · 15/10/2025 22:07

I’m not up on any legalities of this but if she is running a business where customers are in her workplace for that length would she not have to provide toilet facilities?

mamagogo1 · 15/10/2025 22:08

If she’s offering back to back appointments of that length then she should expect customers to need the toilet. I would not go back to her as it’s potentially indicative of the house not being clean including the treatment room

Exactly. She sounds pretty unprofessional. I wouldn't do any long appointments with her tbh.

MidnightMeltdown · 15/10/2025 22:09

I wouldn’t go back, and I wouldn’t have paid for a treatment that I didn’t have either. What a cheeky fucker.

ifyoulikealotofchocolateonyour · 15/10/2025 22:09

This is completely bizarre. How completely rude of her. If it was really that bad I would have nipped in and removed the knickers off the floor/flushed the loo and let you go in. No way would i be going back after that she's clearly a weird person.

Izzywizzy85 · 15/10/2025 22:09

No way would I go back! I wouldn’t have paid for the treatment either! What an absolute weirdo.

OswaldCobblepot · 15/10/2025 22:11

Very unprofessional of her. And unreasonable to make you pay for the lashes. My hairdresser works from her house and she keeps the downstairs loo spotless for clients to use at any time. It's part of her preparation for the day's appointments.

UnhappyHobbit · 15/10/2025 22:11

This beautician clearly doesn’t value your friend as a customer or a human! It doesn’t take that long to clean a toilet. How awful for your friend.

HiCandles · 15/10/2025 22:11

Very odd. Extremely unkind of the beautician not to allow toilet use especially to a newly postpartum mother who may well have pelvic floor issues. I'd be questioning the state of it tbh. It must have been too disgusting for her to even give it a quick tidy of wet towels and check kids hadn't left unflushed. Unfortunately I have seen some absolutely appalling hoarders style bathrooms even when the public areas are reasonably ok (I visit people in their homes for work sometimes).
I wouldn't be going back.

Another point though- You're posting for a friend who doesn't have Mumsnet? I mean really it would've taken her as long to register with an email and password as it would have done to type that OP. Ie 2 mins. It's not some exclusive club with entry requirements; anyone can set up an account.
