Beauty appointment and toilet

I’m sure most people will say I AM being unreasonable here because I’m a grown adult who should be able to hold my bladder but here we go…

I’ve been going to a lady for about 3 years now for beauty services, she normally does my brows, lashes, nails & toes, generally my appointments are 3-3.5 hours. She operates out of her house and must be busy as she always makes out she has lots of clients. Anyway; today was my first appointment after having my baby 12 weeks ago so my bladder is not what it used to be after child birth. She made me a coffee as she always does. She did my nails and toes and I said “before you start my brows and lashes can I use your loo please?” She said “no it’s not clean up there I wasn’t expecting anyone to use it”, I didn’t say anything and then let her do my brows, by this point I was getting really desperate and told her I was going to have to nip to a nearby supermarket to use the toilet and come back, she said if I did that she wouldn’t be able to do my lashes due to time but I’d still have to pay for them as that’s what I’d booked. I knew I couldn’t wait so I paid, left without having my lashes done and went to Tesco 5 minutes away. I really like her and I love the way she does my brows but this has got me questioning whether I should go back? I’ve had treatments done at other peoples homes before and they’ve always offered me use of the toilet…

posting for a friend who doesn’t have mumsnet

@Twodrunkducks Her behaviour was very unprofessional.

If you have a business that involves clients there for over 2 hours then you should have a toilet available.

The fact she didnt AND she expected you to still pay even though you had to leave to pee is ridiculous.

I would ask for a refund for what you didn't receive and if she doesn't then leave a poor review.

I'd not use her again.

Lilywisp · 15/10/2025 22:35

Sounds as if she has an issue with people using her toilet and that’s just an excuse.

Yesitsmeimback · 15/10/2025 22:36

I run a beauty business from my home I can't imagine not allowing a client to use my loo and having the bare faced cheek to charge for a service that they couldn't have because of my weirdness. Its outrageous

SmoothCollie · 15/10/2025 22:36

I find a lot of these practitioners who set up at home end up being woefully unprofessional. I've had kids barging in and it becoming apparent there's no childcare, and a lady who ran late and made me wait in her front room with her husband watching the football 😂 I've given up and only go to proper salons now, it's much less hassle all round. It's crazy to not have a clean loo for clients.

purpleme12 · 15/10/2025 22:37

Erm that is really weird OP and it would certainly put me off going back

Imnotperfecteither · 15/10/2025 22:37

Strange that this came up as I asked the lovely lady who does my brows etc in a converted brick shed type thing in her garden if I could use her loo, and she said no due to insurance reasons!!

DontStopMeNowGoodTime · 15/10/2025 22:39

ValenciaOrange · 15/10/2025 22:23

Also if her bathroom is so dirty she can't let a client use it I'd be worried about her hygiene standards in general and not want her doing my lashes etc.

Thinking the same.

She shouldn't have charged for the eyelashes, that was mean, especially as your friend is a long term loyal customer.
I can't imagine going anywhere for 3.5 hrs and not being about to use the toilet. Confused

Rosesonroses · 15/10/2025 22:40

I run a similar business from home and would never refuse a client using my toilet. Cleaning it and putting fresh towels out is part of setting up for me. I’ve even helped a client to the toilet mid way through a lash set before when she couldn’t open her eyes!

Purplebunnie · 15/10/2025 22:40

Did your friend have to walk past the vets to get to Tesco? If so we have the same beautician

I only go for my nails so a much shorter appointment

Fayaway · 15/10/2025 22:42

mamagogo1 · 15/10/2025 22:08

If she’s offering back to back appointments of that length then she should expect customers to need the toilet. I would not go back to her as it’s potentially indicative of the house not being clean including the treatment room

And the coffee cup 🤢

shuggles · 15/10/2025 22:42

@Twodrunkducks I’m sure most people will say I AM being unreasonable here because I’m a grown adult who should be able to hold my bladder but here we go…

Well no, because most understand that there are many people who need to be able to easily access a toilet for a range of different medical reasons...

PleaseStopEatingMyStuff · 15/10/2025 22:42

Totally unreasonable of her & she shouldn't have charged you for the lashes.
She's either weirdly clean & can't stand clients using her toilet, or weirdly dirty in which case you don't want to use it anyway!
I wouldn't go back.

JohnBullshit · 15/10/2025 22:43

I would never ever go back. How much faff is it to keep the toilet clean? Bog standard (apologies)housekeeping expectation.

JDM625 · 15/10/2025 22:44

Surely if it was an insurance problem, she would have said so, rather than saying her bathroom was manky and she wasn't expecting anyone in there 🤢

WaltzingWaters · 15/10/2025 22:45

Awful of the beautician. She should definitely have a bathroom available to clients, especially for appointments that last that long. I’d certainly never be returning, and wouldn’t have paid for the service I didn’t receive due to her unprofessional premises. I’d also be concerned about general cleanliness of her bathroom is that dirty.

Fayaway · 15/10/2025 22:45

ValenciaOrange · 15/10/2025 22:23

Or making me a drink!

TheatricalLife · 15/10/2025 22:46

I'd not be able to go nearly 4 hours (many couldn't) without having a wee, so she'd have lost me as a client. I'm not going to sit there uncomfortably for hours while paying what I assume is a considerable amount for multiple services. What an odd and unprofessional situation. Imagine sending your client off to Tesco mid service rather than letting them have a 30 second wee! If her bathroom was filthy as she claimed, I'd rather her not touch my face anyway 🤮

I can assure you lots of us home workers are very professional. I am fully insured clean and don't even let my cat meet clients. The amount of salons I go past who have dogs in there I'm not sure thats better.

Summerbay23 · 15/10/2025 22:53

Wow! Very unprofessional, no way would I be going back, what if you were travelling from work and needed to go? I went in the hairdresser today after travelling from home and a 2 hour appointment (no idea where the nearest public toilets are).

YANBU and it would be a deal breaker for me.

Whatsthatsheila · 15/10/2025 22:56

Wherethewildthings · 15/10/2025 21:59

I find it weird she wouldn't let you use the toilet, but reasonable to have to pay for the treatment if leaving part way through.

I disagree. The customer wouldn’t have left if she wasn’t about to piss everywhere.

the beautician should have let her use the loo /nip to the loo and just ran a bit late or not charged her for lashes.

To put the customer in a position where she didn’t really have much choice but to leave and then charge her for it is shittier than the shit stains that were presumably on her bog

RogerR4bbit · 15/10/2025 22:56

What woman wouldn’t allow a post-partum new mum to use the toilet?

Jesus. We’ve all been in that situation and when you need to go, you have to go.

i think the beautician wasn’t just giving bad customer service, she was unkind to a fellow human being.

HoppingPavlova · 15/10/2025 22:59

she normally does my brows, lashes, nails & toes, generally my appointments are 3-3.5 hours

Off topic, but I don’t understand how this can take that long. I have mine done to a high standard and it doesn’t take that long! I have to use the loo at least twice in such an appointment and wouldn’t go if I couldn’t, it just wouldn’t work for me (and yes, I go immediately before leaving home).

ChocolateCinderToffee · 15/10/2025 23:00

If someone’s going to be in my house more than an hour, I’d assume they’d need the loo! If anyone at all is due to come round, I’d clean it just in case.

ElaineBurdock · 15/10/2025 23:02

I'd never go back there.

Or, I'd ask her to turn her back, so I could put on my adult sized nappy, and then muttered something like, 'I hope this damn thing doesn't leak again'. as I sat back down on her chair.

Ap42 · 15/10/2025 23:07

I wouldn't return and I wouldn't have paid in full either. It also makes me wonder on the basic level of cleanliness around her beauty room if her bathroom was that dirty it was unusable.
