Beauty appointment and toilet

I’m sure most people will say I AM being unreasonable here because I’m a grown adult who should be able to hold my bladder but here we go…

I’ve been going to a lady for about 3 years now for beauty services, she normally does my brows, lashes, nails & toes, generally my appointments are 3-3.5 hours. She operates out of her house and must be busy as she always makes out she has lots of clients. Anyway; today was my first appointment after having my baby 12 weeks ago so my bladder is not what it used to be after child birth. She made me a coffee as she always does. She did my nails and toes and I said “before you start my brows and lashes can I use your loo please?” She said “no it’s not clean up there I wasn’t expecting anyone to use it”, I didn’t say anything and then let her do my brows, by this point I was getting really desperate and told her I was going to have to nip to a nearby supermarket to use the toilet and come back, she said if I did that she wouldn’t be able to do my lashes due to time but I’d still have to pay for them as that’s what I’d booked. I knew I couldn’t wait so I paid, left without having my lashes done and went to Tesco 5 minutes away. I really like her and I love the way she does my brows but this has got me questioning whether I should go back? I’ve had treatments done at other peoples homes before and they’ve always offered me use of the toilet…

I wouldn't go back tbh. If I need a wee, I need a wee. Would she rather you wet yourself all over her furnishings? Surprised she's got any customers at all if she behaves like this.

Op before anything you need to find out the law on this!

I would ask at Citizen’s Advice or Trading Standards. I would hazard a guess that there are specific rules governing the services you are obliged to offer when operating a beauty business out of the home which correspond to hygiene regs, provision of toilet, compliance with fire and insurance regs, ventilation possibly, and possibly the chemicals you are allowed to use?

Was the beautician paid in cash? Is there any record of the business transaction?

I would hazard a guess that she is breaking a law (and if she isn’t then the law is inadequate) and in your shoes I would be writing to her and asking for another free appointment to have your brows done or a refund and attach a copy of the laws to your e-mail.

She should have offered one of these options herself rather than profit from inadequate provision of services.

I wouldn't waste my time. I'd just vote with my wallet.
She could easily say, "client is talking pish of couse bathroom is available even if my kids have just pebble dashed the pan"

Neemie · 16/10/2025 08:51

Really weird and a bit cruel of her. I would be put off by the fact that her loo is too manky to have visitors in it, especially as she is touching your face.

Livpool · 16/10/2025 08:56

That is ridiculous! Why couldn’t she clean it a bit if it was that bad (I am sure it wasn’t). I wouldn’t go back

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 16/10/2025 09:16

I wouldn't use her again.
If she is such a mucky cow that her toilet it not fit for pissing in - I would question her hygiene levels and not let her near my face!

CoolPlayer · 16/10/2025 09:25

I have a weak bladder so this would have been rubbish for me especially after a drink. I feel if you’re working from home you should have a loo available for people to use x (unless of course it’s being fixed but let people know on arrival at least)

Flakey99 · 16/10/2025 09:36

Definitely shouldn’t have paid for the lashes as she was the one who wouldn’t you let you use the loo.

Leave a crap review and find someone with better hygiene.

Pastit12 · 16/10/2025 09:40

I’d be put off by the fact that the type of services she’s offering which should adhere to a certain degree of cleanliness that her toilet is not in a fit state to use

NotoriousABC · 16/10/2025 09:41

If her bathroom is that bad that she couldn’t quickly go and flush/move clutter out of the way so a customer could use it, there’s no way she would be putting her pissy fingers by my face or eyes again!

Corgi2023 · 16/10/2025 09:53

I'd also be asking to see a copy of her public liability insurance.

Idontknowhatnametochoose · 16/10/2025 09:57

That's completely wrong of her. Surely legally she should be providing basic amenities? What if a client had a sudden attack of diarrhea?

I wouldn't go back. I have an overactive bladder and need toilet access.

JDM625 · 16/10/2025 09:58

OP- Have you shown this thread to your friend as yet?

ClairDeLaLune · 16/10/2025 10:05

Beautician was really weird. I do a lot of hiking and wild camping so I’d have had no hesitation in telling her I’d go for a quick squat in her garden 🤣

She definitely shouldn’t have charged for the treatment that didn’t happen, as it’s her fault it didn’t happen.

I’d leave her a stinking review, made sure all my SM followers knew what happened, and never go there again.

AutumnLover1989 · 16/10/2025 10:24

Find someone else. She was extremely rude.

Rhubarbandgooseburycrumble · 16/10/2025 14:27

I’m pretty sure she’s breaking the law by not providing a toilet.

JDM625 · 16/10/2025 15:57

I already provided normal advice earlier, but I'd love to have said:

'Oh Barbara, since the baby, I've had the most awful constipation, but I think all those laxatives have finally worked and I REALLY need to go now!'

I couldn't last 3 hours. It takes, on average, 90 minutes for fluids to go through the system to the bladder. Some people can go all day, some only half hour. If you are inviting people into your home it's reasonable to expect them to want to use the bathroom.

GentleJadeOP · 16/10/2025 18:59

Maybe she has a secret up there? Cannabis grow or something??

Daftypants · 16/10/2025 19:45

Oh I wouldn’t go back to her ,all she needed to do was nip to the loo ahead of you and give toilet a quick clean .

Crunchymum · 16/10/2025 19:52

So the customer couldn't use her loo and she couldn't add 10/15 mins on to the appointment to accommodate the customer going to use a public toilet and still charged her for the treatment that wasn't done, despite it being her fault?

I wouldn't dream of seeing her again or giving her another penny.

Zoec1975 · 16/10/2025 19:52

No.it is only polite to let someone use your loo, especially all that time.go elsewhere, someone that actually values your custom

Wildefish · 16/10/2025 20:01

I think if you run a business from your home you should have a clean and usable toilet for clients.

FeetLikeFlippers · 16/10/2025 20:02

Surely if she’s running a business from home she should have facilities available for her customers, especially with appointments lasting 2 to 3 hours.

Chinsupmeloves · 16/10/2025 20:08

I would like to assume a toilet facility would be available for that length of appointment, in fact any sessions. Very unprofessional and ridiculous. Xxx

croydon15 · 16/10/2025 20:13

I would not go back either and probably have posted on FB as a warning to others
