Beauty appointment and toilet

I’m sure most people will say I AM being unreasonable here because I’m a grown adult who should be able to hold my bladder but here we go…

I’ve been going to a lady for about 3 years now for beauty services, she normally does my brows, lashes, nails & toes, generally my appointments are 3-3.5 hours. She operates out of her house and must be busy as she always makes out she has lots of clients. Anyway; today was my first appointment after having my baby 12 weeks ago so my bladder is not what it used to be after child birth. She made me a coffee as she always does. She did my nails and toes and I said “before you start my brows and lashes can I use your loo please?” She said “no it’s not clean up there I wasn’t expecting anyone to use it”, I didn’t say anything and then let her do my brows, by this point I was getting really desperate and told her I was going to have to nip to a nearby supermarket to use the toilet and come back, she said if I did that she wouldn’t be able to do my lashes due to time but I’d still have to pay for them as that’s what I’d booked. I knew I couldn’t wait so I paid, left without having my lashes done and went to Tesco 5 minutes away. I really like her and I love the way she does my brows but this has got me questioning whether I should go back? I’ve had treatments done at other peoples homes before and they’ve always offered me use of the toilet…

Apart from her basic lack of regard for your human need, I would caution against using her services again. Imagine her bathroom really was awful, it reflects on her personal hygiene and she is touching you as a beauty therapist. I know she probably wears gloves for these procedures, but I would not let anyone touch me or serve me a drink if I thought they were unclean. I have had MRSA from unsanitary conditions and was very poorly for six weeks. I lost count of the different types of antibiotics they used on me in the hospital. I might be overly sensitive as a result, but it would give me the ick if a therapist admitted to not having a clean environment. I assume she is using her own toilet facilities during her work shift.

Frequentlyincorrectbut · 16/10/2025 00:20

I agree with the above poster that if it's so bad that a quick 5 min tidy can't do the job, it must be really minging. I mean she could have taken 5 min of the 3 hour appointment to have a quick clean and still done your lashes! A courteous and nice person would have said it's not too clean, why don't I make you a drink and take a break for five minutes and I'll just nip up and sort it out.

I could not begin to go to a service that didn't have facilities for a loo for 3-3.5 hours, I often need a wee within an hour of being out as I drink heaps of water for health, and whilst I can usually hold it for a few hours, I wouldn't want to be sitting there in discomfort unable to wee. I wouldn't go to a cafe without a loo/shop without anywhere to go, it's just not ok at all.

Frequentlyincorrectbut · 16/10/2025 00:21

I meant shopping centre. One of my friends has a bladder issue and I know every public toilet, pub and cafe location in the local area!

Trallers · 16/10/2025 00:24

My first thought was how gross must her bathroom be to not even be able to let someone use it in an emergency. Here's a fresh towel and sorry its due a clean would be fine. Unless she actually uses that as an excuse because she doesn't like people in her bathroom?!

Off topic, but I don’t understand how this can take that long. I have mine done to a high standard and it doesn’t take that long! I have to use the loo at least twice in such an appointment and wouldn’t go if I couldn’t, it just wouldn’t work for me (and yes, I go immediately before leaving home).

If someone’s having all those treatments in one session, I would certainly expect it to take at least three hours. I get dip powder nails, hands only, and that alone takes an hour.

Not that it matters - of course she should have let her client use the loo!

Empress13 · 16/10/2025 00:29

Is this for real ? How batshit crazy making you go elsewhere! I certainly wouldn’t be returning

Newmeagain · 16/10/2025 00:30

I would have just left as soon as she said the toilet could not be used and I would have only paid for the treatments already provided.

BlueFlowers5 · 16/10/2025 00:53

I'd ring Trading Standards for advice, on your friend's behalf.
Doing beauty treatments with no where to wash her hands (the beautician) is unhygienic.
And offering treatments competing with beauticians who have planning approval is out of order.

canchewcashew · 16/10/2025 00:58

I don't think I would go back to her after that. She ought to have a restroom available for emergencies, but failing that, she could have let your friend come back in between appointments sometime to have her lashes done. I can't believe she's too busy for that.

Needspaceforlego · 16/10/2025 00:59

Op I'd go elsewhere.

Seriously its making me question everything.
Her cleanliness standards bathroom, kitchen, treatment room.
Is she actually a registered business, is she insured?
Surely her insurance would require a toilet or her planning would require a toilet?

Make life easy go elsewhere

NetflixandKill1 · 16/10/2025 01:03

She definitely had a dead body in the tub.

BananaMilkshake369 · 16/10/2025 01:04

If her bathroom is THAT bad , I wouldn't want her touching my face and eyes!!!!!!

Abouttoblow · 16/10/2025 02:07

Wherethewildthings · 15/10/2025 21:59

I find it weird she wouldn't let you use the toilet, but reasonable to have to pay for the treatment if leaving part way through.

What? Are you serious?

GiddyRobin · 16/10/2025 02:19

No way would I go back.

I get my nails done by an independent tech and she works out of her house. Some appointments can be lengthy as I get quite intricate work done, and while I do my best to hold my bladder sometimes it's just not possible, even with making sure I've been first. First time I asked her to nip to the loo, I apologised for the intrusion and she told me not to be silly!

There's absolutely no way I could sit for that long and not go to the loo. If someone is offering appointments that lengthy, then they need to give their bloody bog a scrub and make it accessible! If it's that filthy then she shouldn't be offering beauty appointments out of her home, and I'd be seriously questioning her hygiene.

Purplerubberducky · 16/10/2025 03:16

What an absolute weirdo. Don’t go back again !

MungoforPresident · 16/10/2025 03:33

I think she has a dead body in the bath! Too heavy to move. Otherwise, she was very odd and mean. If someone is coming to my home, even for half an hour, I make sure there is a clean loo they can use with towel, hand soap etc ready. It is bizarre she would book in long appointments and deny the facilities!

Todayismyfavouriteday · 16/10/2025 03:42

I would never go back. If you have a business and a client needs to use the toilet, you must provide one.

BabyCat2020z · 16/10/2025 04:40

It's outrageous. I'd never go back. Extremely bad customer experience.

Trendyname · 16/10/2025 05:03

I wouldn’t go back to her. If she is providing professional services from home, she needs to let her clients have access to loo.

LivingTheDreamish · 16/10/2025 05:30

That's awful, I would never go back. If she's working from her home she needs to expect and assume that toilet facilities will be required.

Tempestuousfeline731 · 16/10/2025 05:42

Op before anything you need to find out the law on this!

I would ask at Citizen’s Advice or Trading Standards. I would hazard a guess that there are specific rules governing the services you are obliged to offer when operating a beauty business out of the home which correspond to hygiene regs, provision of toilet, compliance with fire and insurance regs, ventilation possibly, and possibly the chemicals you are allowed to use?

Was the beautician paid in cash? Is there any record of the business transaction?

I would hazard a guess that she is breaking a law (and if she isn’t then the law is inadequate) and in your shoes I would be writing to her and asking for another free appointment to have your brows done or a refund and attach a copy of the laws to your e-mail.

She should have offered one of these options herself rather than profit from inadequate provision of services.

Bowies · 16/10/2025 06:05

I think that was unreasonable for the beauty therapist not to anticipate the need of the loo, even to offer it on arrival before starting all the treatments.

Cleaning the bathroom loo and sink are the minimum I would do if expecting a visitor.

Agree with PP she could have said “let me just pop up there first and check ii’s clean” (and quickly cleaned it for your friend if necessary).

I would accept the cutting short of treatments, however wouldn’t bother to go back or recommend her to others due to her lack of hospitality.

When I used to up for treatments at someone’s home they even used to make me a strong coffee etc before we started. I would have been in trouble if I couldn’t use her loo!

Littlemisscapable · 16/10/2025 06:08

mamagogo1 · 15/10/2025 22:08

If she’s offering back to back appointments of that length then she should expect customers to need the toilet. I would not go back to her as it’s potentially indicative of the house not being clean including the treatment room

This. Errhgghhh........ how clean is her equipment and stuff also ? I wouldn't go back but would definitely let her know why I won't be returning.

101Nutella · 16/10/2025 06:37

To be honest it’s unreasonable you had to pay. I’d be tempted to launch a complaint with my card company to see if I can get it returned, or check with the local council if toilets should be provided, then message her to get the money back.

i wouldn’t go back. I’d also leave a factual review- especially once you know the council legalities. She could be ripping loads of people off, taking their money for no service.

wheres the humanity that someone newly postpartum isn’t given the offer of a toilet. Just horrid all round

landlordhell · 16/10/2025 06:41

I wouldn’t go again! If you are offering services that people pay for you need to provide facilities. 3.5 hours plus coffee=loo!
