Does anyone else feel like this about Gaza/Israel?

I know it sounds awful, but I’m desperate for a break from Gaza. I feel like we’ve had 2 straight years of hearing about absolutely nothing else. It feels like you can’t switch the radio on, or open Facebook, or even pop to the shop without hearing chants of PALESTINE and having flags waved in your face. It’s been absolutely relentless, and wildly disproportionate compared to other conflicts and atrocities around the world.

Of course it’s hideous that so many civilians have been killed, in particular children. But it feels like Palestine truly believes it is the only population who suffered during the 1940s and is the only country to ever lose territory or be reshaped by global events. I feel like everyone else adjusted to their new normal, for the sake of peace, while Palestinians just continue what seems like an infinite grudge which is then met with harsher repressions by Israel as they have to defend themselves.

It’s utterly exhausting the globe and I have zero hope they will now smell the coffee and take the opportunity to kick Hamas out because ultimately they don’t want peace. Hamas did not drop out of the sky, they and Oct 7 had high support until they started losing, and I think it’s very unlikely they will ever be willing to move on from past events.

AIBU to think we now just need to leave them to it for the sake of all involved?

Calm down. What would you suggest if the same happened to the UK? If somebody raped your loved one while stabbing her to death and filmed themselves laughing with a go pro? If somebody did Oct 7 to the UK, you wouldn’t accept the perpetrators getting a free pass because the cowards hide themselves among civilians. Don’t pretend you would.

I would certainly want action if someone perpetrated such atrocities against my loved ones as those perpetrated by Hamas on October 7th.

However, I don't see how the mass killing of innocent civilians who were not in any way responsible for the attack would comfort me in that scenario. I fail to see how the loss of more innocent lives could in any way help.

I wouldn't be too sure about that. There are people in this country who would cheer the terrorists on if they were the right 'oppressed' group - and blame the women raped and murdered for their colonialism and whatever sort of racism fitted (except anti-semitism). And if you think Starmer and co. have any appetite for e.g. sending a task force to the Falklands you would be wrong. They'd wring their hands and spend years at the UN rather than fight (not that I applaud Thatcher on the Falklands, she set up the situation that caused invasion by cutting funding for the 'exploration' RN ship that patrolled the waters round the island as it was unnecessary).

@MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack You are very keen to tell us of the suffering of Palestinians - at the moment facing murder on their streets in a nascent civil war between Hamas and their opposition military groups - but the figures you cite are at least open to question since they came from Hamas controlled agencies (and we are seeing what happens to people who do not toe the Hamas party line, they get shot). Looking at the people walking back to North Gaza none appear in any way to be starving - where are the thin women, the pot-bellied children that one sees in Yemen or Sudan? Those who lost loved ones talk of them being 'martyred' i.e. they died in the fight to remove Israel from the map (again I refer you to Hamas' way with dissidents). I don't think there was any starvation in Gaza and I do think Hamas hid in schools and hospitals, which is a war crime as it opens up the possibility of legal bombing of those facilities - so Hamas put civilians in those facilities in danger of bombing and being killed.
The UN has, however, now confirmed that Hamas and Palestinians citizens (both militia and non-militia members) raped and murdered innocent people all day on Oct 7th 2023 and also murdered hostages (and some of the women hostages have said they were raped).

I'm certainly not denying any of the horrific crimes committed against Jewish people by Palestinians on October 7th. (I'm not sure that they can be described as "citizens" in the absence of a Palestinian state?) Nor am I denying the fact that some Palestinians have behaved equally brutally towards their own people. I don't think that makes the entire population guilty by association. Equally, I don't hold the entire population of Israel responsible for the actions of the Israeli government.

You make reference to the figures which I have cited, but I don't believe that I have actually cited any figures so don't know what you're talking about there. Unless you're actually trying to deny the fact innocent Palestinian people have been killed at all?

I thought you said 80k but I might have got the wrong poster (long thread) so sorry. I used 'citizens' (which is indeed inappropriate) for lack of finding a word that meant they lived in Gaza but weren't members of militias or Hamas - ordinary folk, I suppose.
No, I don't think no Palestinians died, a huge number did, mostly because Hamas commits war crimes by not wearing uniforms, mingling with non-combatants and having their military bases in what are supposed to be civilian facilities. I am a bit wary of Palestinian civilians who talk of their martyred dead - it suggests they see the war against Israel as a jihad which they are taking part in or supporting.

Onmytod24 · 17/10/2025 21:21

You need to look up the word martyr in the dictionary

What if a rapust and murderer decided to live on your street so those who were harmed bombed your street, your kids primary school and the local hospital killing your whole family incase the perpetrator was hiding there. Would you be happy with your loved ones being seen globally as collateral damage

"I follow a very astute Muslim commentator "

Let me guess ... Mosab Hassan Yousef? The former Hamas member turned Shin Bet spy who thinks that Gaza 'needs to be wiped off the map" for Israel's security? 🤔

Are the Nigerians being bombed by a democratic nation state?

I think its Boko Haram.

Milaking · 22/12/2025 02:32

No… we feel if it was our children our brothers we would feel for them. But I, as a human being, modern, civilised and hoping to stand with those unfortunate or in adversity- I want to know what happens if I wish for a better world. 60,000 dead in Gaza and 15+ killed in BONDI?? Do you feel more for Jewish people because they are white? A human being killed should affect us all. But if you are fed up with Gaza it is Ok. I have felt overwhelmed by it once or twice but i do think it is weird that you need support from others who feel your way.

tiredofchristmas · 22/12/2025 04:42

It’s not our problem. It’s nothing to do with us. The only involvement we might have is selling arms to the Israelis, but that’s what our (very successful) arms industry does. The publicity surrounding it is intimidating British Jews.

I had someone whining about it at work the other day. Totally irrelevant in our generic office environment and I rolled my eyes and decided never to spend time with such a pathetic cretin. Hamas are clearly scum who don’t want peace at all. The peaceful Palestine people are stuck with them so are always going to suffer.

wineosaurusrex · 22/12/2025 04:48

Wow. Sorry that the genocide is inconvenient for you.

Paddington5 · 22/12/2025 04:54

The narrative on the Trans debate meant if you mention that you don’t think male born trans women should be competing in women’s sport you are called a transphobic person .

if you say you think the IDF are killing innocent Gazans you are told this is an antisemitic opinion.

Neither of the above are justified. So it’s pointless debating these issues.

"Do you feel more for Jewish people because they are white?"

What a vile thing to say about a racist terror attack.

NikkiPotnick · 22/12/2025 11:27

I'm more surprised about how stupid it is, really. A few seconds googling should be sufficient to learn of the existence of Jews who are not white. Hamas certainly knew all about them!
