To have made my partner switch hotels in London?

LondonWoes · 09/10/2025 15:48

My partner surprised me with a long weekend in London, for my birthday. He got us theatre tickets and told me he had sorted the hotel out.

We got on the train today and he started bragging it was £30 a night. That immediately set alarm bells ringing. We arrive and it’s a dump. It’s not even a hotel, but someone’s house with a load of converted rooms. There’s no reception, just a living room, and every door has the same key. That same key also opened the front door. We had been put in a downstairs room, with no window. It was boiling hot.

I told him I wasn’t staying in that hotel. It didn’t feel safe and the vibes were off. He has begrudgingly moved but made me pay, so now im £500 down for my birthday weekend. Was I being unreasonable?

We’re both late 20s.

if we were younger I’d accept it, or if I knew he was on a tight budget. But he’s literally just booked a ski weekend with all his friends, so I know it’s not that!

Well, I doubt he'll be spending only £30 a night there... no wonder he doesn't have any money for you - he is prioritising his friends.

Ilikewinter · 09/10/2025 16:34

Oh my goodness, I admire you for sticking it out OP, I would have left him there and booked a £500 a night room 😂

That looks like a coffin 😐

Doesn't he deserve it?! I didn't say I would stay there!

Fuming because they are bloody lovely but I won’t enjoy it out of principle now.

im so tempted to send him home and refund him for the theatre ticket.

Tell him to go back and stay in the shithole he paid for and you stay in the hotel

Peachy2005 · 09/10/2025 16:36

If there are actual Hamilton tickets, will they be behind a pillar I wonder…

Good point!

There’s something so ick worthy about a man actively bragging about being cheap

Completely agree

FlorenceAndTheVagine · 09/10/2025 16:36

He’s picking up your supper at 16:35?

Oh, no.

In that case I would bin him off. You're young enough to have plenty of time to find someone better, but not so young that you can afford to waste too much time on the wrong man.

Yeah this is a bit weird.

TheDenimPoet · 09/10/2025 16:37

Sorry but booking somewhere to stay that's worse than where you normally live isn't a "treat" and you have every right to complain.

I know!!

it’s all just such a disappointment.

😂Maybe he wanted to take advantage of the Early Bird offer???

Fucking hell people, what's with all the stupid nitpicking questions? The OP has been perfectly clear throughout.

I wonder if other people are having problems with the site - I keep having overload issues and have to refresh, or it takes forever to post because of the purple 'something's gone wrong' message that pops up and by the time it reloads/posts the conversation has wrong. I certainly am and have had to move from my iPad to my laptop as it seems to work a bit better on here.

Enjoy your weekend but I would end it after that. He’s a tight arse with you. You’re worth more than that.

GottaBeStrong · 09/10/2025 16:41

Please don't let him back in with you. He's being absolutely obnoxious, especially after he's booked himself the skiing holiday. He's literally showing you what he thinks you're worth. I'd rather have done nothing than be put in a potential bedbug £30 a night dosshouse.

I paid £80 for a room in a guest house in North London in 2010, so how he can think £30 in 2025 would have led to anything reasonable is beyond me.

ThatRealLemonCat · 09/10/2025 16:41

No way would I stay with someone thinking a £30 a night anywhere was acceptable.
It cost more to go camping 😂

Its not the price in itself, it's that it cannot be anything else than a dump.

Cheap and basic is not a treat, but practical, but a hovel is just a no.

PuppyMonkey · 09/10/2025 16:41

Sounds like it’s going to be a VERY long weekend.

Luckily because he will not have checked there aren’t any pillars in the way at the Victoria Palace.

gottakeeponmoving · 09/10/2025 16:43

Has he definitely got the tickets?

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 09/10/2025 16:44

Dump him. Then in a few months, you’ll look back on this and laugh.

Coffeeishot · 09/10/2025 16:45

Starlight1984 · 09/10/2025 16:23

Based on the accommodation and choice of meal, I can't for the life of me imagine that he has bought tickets for Hamilton. Maybe he'll just pick up a programme for them to read whilst they're eating their burgers and play the soundtrack on his phone?

Oh no poor OP ! You can't do London on a budget but it doesn't have to be stingy and miserable.

MyPurpleHeart · 09/10/2025 16:45

LondonWoes · 09/10/2025 16:14

We’ve got tickets to Hamilton. They’re the cheapest ones but I’ve been wanting to see this show since it came out so I’d stand on the roof!

I saw it two weeks ago and it was incredible!!!

GottaBeStrong · 09/10/2025 16:46

You can literally get a ticket for yourself for tomorrow a few rows back for £100. Go by yourself 🤣 and enjoy your birthday without this miser!

teawamutu · 09/10/2025 16:46

See the show then DTMA. Tightarsed twat.
