To have made my partner switch hotels in London?

My partner surprised me with a long weekend in London, for my birthday. He got us theatre tickets and told me he had sorted the hotel out.

We got on the train today and he started bragging it was £30 a night. That immediately set alarm bells ringing. We arrive and it’s a dump. It’s not even a hotel, but someone’s house with a load of converted rooms. There’s no reception, just a living room, and every door has the same key. That same key also opened the front door. We had been put in a downstairs room, with no window. It was boiling hot.

I told him I wasn’t staying in that hotel. It didn’t feel safe and the vibes were off. He has begrudgingly moved but made me pay, so now im £500 down for my birthday weekend. Was I being unreasonable?

So he booked you a joint night out for YOUR birthday but YOU are paying for it all? So you are essentially paying for his night out? Or have I misunderstood??

Chillychock · 09/10/2025 16:01

You’re on this thread and you are currently actually in the new hotel? Is that air thick with tension?!

He’s gone out for a walk. Said he needed to cool off.

We’re in an ibis. Just over £150 a night because it was last minute

Are you and him currently in the room?

What was the plan for tonight?

So 3 nights?

Theatre tonight?

What was the plan for tonight?

Dinner out and a walk along the Thames. Not sure we’ll be doing it now.

£30 a night? Can you share some more details? Like one of the pp’s said, you can’t even get a room in a dorm for that. I stay in London a lot and even a premier inn is £200 most of the time.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 09/10/2025 16:04

How long have you and Prince Charming been together?

It was literally some dive he’s found on Airbnb. He was SO proud.

It wouldn't have been the same key for all rooms. Plenty of hotels have keys that all work in the front door and then for individual rooms - that only work for those rooms. Unless you tried to go into someone else's room?

I don't think you were unreasonable to not want to stay there if you felt unsafe - that's totally fine. I'm not sure how you are 'down' £500? How much was the replacement hotel?

Presumably because the OP has had to pay for the replacement hotel themselves and they clarified it cost them £500 for the duration, but that was pretty clear from the op I thought!

Why? Because he’s in too much of an arse? You? Or both of you?

Because each key to the room opened the front door!

Sorry, that's not how many hotel keys work. It's quite common to have locks set so that individual rooms have their own locks, but share the ability to open common access areas.

The hotel might have been scummy, but you didn't need to move from a security point of view

Chillychock · 09/10/2025 16:06

Have you checked where he’s booked dinner?

how much did the theatre cost? I have just spent £205 on 2 tickets to hunger games!

gottakeeponmoving · 09/10/2025 16:07

If he’s not paying for the new hotel I’d be leaving him to enjoy his bargain room by himself.

Couldyounot · 09/10/2025 16:08

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 09/10/2025 15:57

What's he got planned for dinner? Yellow sticker sandwiches from Tesco? Going through the bins behind Pret?

Nah. Begging round by the 'Dilly for yer man.

I knew they had to pay for the replacement hotel, but if that cost wasn't £500 then I was wondering how they could be '£500 down' - 'down' suggests spending more than budgeted. So when she said that the hotel wasn't £500 I wondered what else contributed to the £500. But spending £500 overall isn't being 'down' - 'down' is the amount over the estimated budget for the whole city break.

Because each key to the room opened the front door!

Loads of hotels have that set up, just because they all get in the front door doesn’t mean they will all unlock your room.

there are probably loads of other reasons to change but they keys aren’t one of them.

BlueberryLatte · 09/10/2025 16:09

My husband is very careful with money, but even he wouldn't scrimp like that on a hotel stay which is part of a birthday gift. That's really off putting. Yanbu to move hotels and also wouldn't be U to be miffed with him.

Well. Yes. It’s my birthday trip, I didn’t expect to have to pay for accommodation!

Huh?

She's "down" 500 quid because her partner was supposed to be taking her away for the weekend and then she got to London and found he'd booked a complete shithole so 500 quid was how much it cost her to book acceptable accommodation, which she has had to pay for even though it was supposed to be his treat.

Yeah this isn’t a hotel with key cards. It was literally a physical key. Like you’d use at your home.

I’d be happy to go out. I’m disappointed but i love London so want to get out and about. He’s in a right mood. We’ve been together 18 months.
