To have made my partner switch hotels in London?

LondonWoes · 09/10/2025 15:48

My partner surprised me with a long weekend in London, for my birthday. He got us theatre tickets and told me he had sorted the hotel out.

We got on the train today and he started bragging it was £30 a night. That immediately set alarm bells ringing. We arrive and it’s a dump. It’s not even a hotel, but someone’s house with a load of converted rooms. There’s no reception, just a living room, and every door has the same key. That same key also opened the front door. We had been put in a downstairs room, with no window. It was boiling hot.

I told him I wasn’t staying in that hotel. It didn’t feel safe and the vibes were off. He has begrudgingly moved but made me pay, so now im £500 down for my birthday weekend. Was I being unreasonable?

He was absolutely stupid to think he can pay £30 for a night in a hotel in London.
My sister paid £80 for a night in a hotel in London, her and her boyfriend pulled up in the taxi, burst out laughing and went to find another hotel.
He should be a bit embarrased with his 'present.'

Oh God. I think I stayed in that hotel! And its cousin in Dublin!

Oh my God.

Eat your admittedly delicious burger and then BIN HIM OFF.

What a tightarse.

Fuming because they are bloody lovely but I won’t enjoy it out of principle now.

im so tempted to send him home and refund him for the theatre ticket.

What's he got planned for dinner? Yellow sticker sandwiches from Tesco? Going through the bins behind Pret?

at 500 quid for hotel I would reckon that would be what's left of the budget lol

UnctuousUnicorns · 09/10/2025 16:23

Bloody hell, I last stayed in a hotel in London around thirty years ago, pretty sure I paid at least £30 per night back then, if not more.

Coffeeishot · 09/10/2025 16:22

What do you mean the reasturant reservations wasnt a reservations? You could probably wait for a seat at five guys, im not holding out much hope for decent theatre seats tbh.

Based on the accommodation and choice of meal, I can't for the life of me imagine that he has bought tickets for Hamilton. Maybe he'll just pick up a programme for them to read whilst they're eating their burgers and play the soundtrack on his phone?

Silvers11 · 09/10/2025 16:24

I've just seen your latest update @LondonWoes . Is this for real?

NO @LondonWoes the theatre cost can be part of his contribution to your hotel costs seeing YOU had to pay for the new one!

Arlanymor · 09/10/2025 16:26

Oh so he's mean - based off of the 'restaurant' update - that is such an unattractive quality and unless he's a teenager spending all of his pocket money then why on earth can't he see that he is being incredibly cheap?

Send him home - or if home is too far to go until tomorrow - then invest a further £20 and book a Zedwell capsule for him in Piccadilly Circus - I'm not even joking! https://zedwellhotels.com/locations/london/piccadilly-circus/zedwell-capsule-hotel/?_gl=11hreb9i_upMQ.._gs*MQ..&gclid=CjwKCAjwup3HBhAAEiwA7euZunHPPBSyS_r7JK9PcrnbkX1CekD7txOzXB1m6meJ_Ap_w3kwUsxUERoCf7EQAvD_BwE&gbraid=0AAAAACmkyJx6zERfNZ4UKJZjOb73h5Nj3

Book direct and they give you 10% off I believe, so £18 to get rid of a stingy bloke is a bargain I think!

That looks like a coffin 😐

Birdy1982 · 09/10/2025 16:27

Does he have form for being cheap careful ?

AnnoyedAsAllHeck · 09/10/2025 16:27

spoonbillstretford · 09/10/2025 16:20

Christ, I'd pack, check out while he's picking up the order and go home, and pick up a nice Itsu and a bottle of wine on my way.

I'd call down and see if you can switch rooms. Switch and put his stuff in the lobby so when he comes back, they can give him his luggage and get their key card back.

Peachy2005 · 09/10/2025 16:28

This is a new level of tightness. LTB…leave his bag down to reception, get the front desk to cancel his keycard and break up with him by text. Buy your own burger and maybe you could get a single last-minute theatre ticket 😂

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 09/10/2025 16:29

How old is he, @LondonWoes?

If he's 19 and you're his first girlfriend and this is his first weekend in London then I'd cut him more slack than if he's 30 and just tight.

ThejoyofNC · 09/10/2025 16:29

I couldn't get over this level of stinginess. I'd rather not go at all. I'd kick him out of my hotel room and send him home or back to his £30 a night dump.

dreamingbohemian · 09/10/2025 16:29

Are you sure he actually bought the theatre tickets?? Do you have them in your possession?

RedToothBrush · 09/10/2025 16:30

LondonWoes · 09/10/2025 16:18

He’s just let me know he’s ordered our dinner and is picking it up, because apparently the restaurant reservation wasn’t actually a reservation.

it’s five guys. Because I like burgers and it’s a “treat”

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry

This man is your soon to be ex.

Do you want to be with a man for the rest of your life whose idea of a treat trip to London is an insecure bargain basement flee pit room (and then makes you pay for an alternative when you say you don't feel safe) and a burger and chips take out?!

There's so many wonderful AND AFFORDABLE places to eat in London (and are probably cheaper than Five Guys!)

Imagine the next fifty years of disappointment at Christmas and Birthdays. Imagine the tightfistedness of buying bargains for the house. Imagine him rationing toilet paper and making a note of how many sheets you've used, because he's that tight.

You may not be interested someone rich, you may not be remotely motivated by money HOWEVER extreme tightfistedness can definitely be a red flag and give the ick.

Dump.

You can do better than this.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 09/10/2025 16:31

We’re both late 20s.

if we were younger I’d accept it, or if I knew he was on a tight budget. But he’s literally just booked a ski weekend with all his friends, so I know it’s not that!

£30 a night? Can you share some more details? Like one of the pp’s said, you can’t even get a room in a dorm for that. I stay in London a lot and even a premier inn is £200 most of the time.

Yes. What the actual fuck in London was £30 a night?? What area? He must’ve gone out of his way to find something so shite. Treat yourself to The Savoy.

Same here. We always say there's no point going away and staying somewhere shit. We're not snobby and definitely not rolling in it but I'd rather stay at home than stay in some (extremely) budget hotel for £30 a night!!!! Going away for a weekend / birthday / holiday is supposed to be treat. Otherwise what's the point?

SpaceRaccoon · 09/10/2025 16:33

Fucking hell people, what's with all the stupid nitpicking questions? The OP has been perfectly clear throughout.

There’s something so ick worthy about a man actively bragging about being cheap
