To have made my partner switch hotels in London?

My partner surprised me with a long weekend in London, for my birthday. He got us theatre tickets and told me he had sorted the hotel out.

We got on the train today and he started bragging it was £30 a night. That immediately set alarm bells ringing. We arrive and it’s a dump. It’s not even a hotel, but someone’s house with a load of converted rooms. There’s no reception, just a living room, and every door has the same key. That same key also opened the front door. We had been put in a downstairs room, with no window. It was boiling hot.

I told him I wasn’t staying in that hotel. It didn’t feel safe and the vibes were off. He has begrudgingly moved but made me pay, so now im £500 down for my birthday weekend. Was I being unreasonable?

The only time I’ve paid £40 per night in London was during COVID (during one of the brief occasions you could go to hotels)

Redpeach · 09/10/2025 16:11

How old is he?

CoralOP · 09/10/2025 16:11

He was absolutely stupid to think he can pay £30 for a night in a hotel in London.
My sister paid £80 for a night in a hotel in London, her and her boyfriend pulled up in the taxi, burst out laughing and went to find another hotel.
He should be a bit embarrased with his 'present.'

Huh?

She's "down" 500 quid because her partner was supposed to be taking her away for the weekend and then she got to London and found he'd booked a complete shithole so 500 quid was how much it cost her to book acceptable accommodation, which she has had to pay for even though it was supposed to be his treat.

I'm catching up on the posts as the site is being a nightmare reloading as it sometimes does. I can see now that she's given the hotel cost (hadn't at the time I posted first) so she's £450 down.

I’d be happy to go out. I’m disappointed but i love London so want to get out and about. He’s in a right mood. We’ve been together 18 months.

so he’s going to piss over your birthday weekend because of a tiff that has now been solved?

no sign of this trait before now?

and have you checked where you’re sitting ie standing? In the theatre?! And restaurants he’s booked??

Yeah this isn’t a hotel with key cards. It was literally a physical key. Like you’d use at your home.

That's still no indication that every room was the same key. The front door will be a communal lock and every room would have their own individual key.

Zanzara · 09/10/2025 16:12

We were handed one key. I just didn’t feel safe, it wasn’t very secure!

We’ve got tickets to Hamilton. They’re the cheapest ones but I’ve been wanting to see this show since it came out so I’d stand on the roof!

£30 a night was nuts, but why are you paying £500? 🤷‍♀️. There is a happy medium. 😐

jeaux90 · 09/10/2025 16:17

Hang on He’s in a mood because??? WTF - seriously is this a one off or is he usually this much of an asshole.

He’s just let me know he’s ordered our dinner and is picking it up, because apparently the restaurant reservation wasn’t actually a reservation.

it’s five guys. Because I like burgers and it’s a “treat”

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry

So he is tight and he sulks?

Chuck this one back, you can do better.

He’s gone out for a walk. Said he needed to cool off.

HE needs to cool off?! The cheek! You've only been together 18 months; I think I'd dump him now and go and enjoy the rest of my birthday evening in London alone.

spoonbillstretford · 09/10/2025 16:18

£150 a night for a London Ibis is pretty good, not a last minute mark-up.

rwalker · 09/10/2025 16:18

Sometimes you just book what you can afford
mid be pissed off if I got slagged off for it and wouldn’t bother in future

Starlight1984 · 09/10/2025 16:18

£30 a night?!?! In London?!?! My nephew went the other week with his mates and they stayed in a dorm in some budget hostel and that was £50 a night!!!

I am intrigued by what he found for this price. Please can you send us the Airbnb link 😂

Christ, I'd pack, check out while he's picking up the order and go home, and pick up a nice Itsu and a bottle of wine on my way.

Oh my God.

Eat your admittedly delicious burger and then BIN HIM OFF.

What a tightarse.

Silvers11 · 09/10/2025 16:21

I don't blame you for wanting to move hotels if it was as bad as you say @LondonWoes although you are almost certainly quite wrong about the room key opening every other room

But how did you handle it? Did you tear into him, or did you tell him gently that you needed to move hotels. At the end of the day he was trying to do something nice for your birthday, so I hope you didn't lose the head with him. If you did, I can understand why he is upset. I do feel for you too though

😲

That's so disappointing and him saying he had dinner reservations was misleading. I really hope the show isn't some other bargain basement dupe too!

What do you mean the reasturant reservations wasnt a reservations? You could probably wait for a seat at five guys, im not holding out much hope for decent theatre seats tbh.
