To have made my partner switch hotels in London?

LondonWoes · 09/10/2025 15:48

My partner surprised me with a long weekend in London, for my birthday. He got us theatre tickets and told me he had sorted the hotel out.

We got on the train today and he started bragging it was £30 a night. That immediately set alarm bells ringing. We arrive and it’s a dump. It’s not even a hotel, but someone’s house with a load of converted rooms. There’s no reception, just a living room, and every door has the same key. That same key also opened the front door. We had been put in a downstairs room, with no window. It was boiling hot.

I told him I wasn’t staying in that hotel. It didn’t feel safe and the vibes were off. He has begrudgingly moved but made me pay, so now im £500 down for my birthday weekend. Was I being unreasonable?

I hope you don't see a long term future with him...

Delphiniumandlupins · 09/10/2025 16:48

I would be worried that the Hamilton tickets are for an AmDram production!

I'm very sorry OP, and I don't believe that the amount someone spends is necessarily an indication of their regard, but £30 a night in London was always going to be dodgy. Followed by Five Guys takeaway, unless you had agreed this in advance, is odd. Is he normally this tight/gormless?

Labelak · 09/10/2025 16:50

He sounds quite thick

If you want to stay for cheap, you can stay in a pod/capsule hotel. They are at least safe and legitimate.

Not even. ‘Hamilton’ - through the lens of a busker in Warren Street tube station.. tickets free!!

SoScarletItWas · 09/10/2025 16:50

I’d be worried they are for the filmed version and he’s got Odeon tickets, @Delphiniumandlupins!

LondonWoes · 09/10/2025 16:53

I have the Hamilton tickets now and thankfully they’re real.

He’s in a right grump. He’s sat sulking on the bed on his
phone. I might just go out by myself for the evening.

Mind, he sounds a bit like my tightarse clueless DH. November 22 I booked 2 nights in a hotel in St Bees Head for us. Lovely room with sea view, big shower room, full cooked breakfast with unlimited juices, hot drinks, cereals, bread, pastries, jams etc. £80 the lot. He queried that. I said, you're still living in 19 fucking 85 sometimes. 🤷‍♀️

HundredMilesAnHour · 09/10/2025 16:53

Who said romance is dead eh? He sounds like quite the catch. I’ve come down with a serious case of the ick just reading the posts from@LondonWoes

Has he definitely got the tickets?

A tiny part of me wonders this: if he promised Hamilton tickets, couldn’t get them and has panicked and is now trying every possible way to get OP to bin off the trip without him having to admit the tickets don’t exist!

More likely is he’s blown the budget on the tickets and is now just being very tight. 😂

BadActingParsley · 09/10/2025 16:55

Oh my God he so reminds me of a friend's boyfriend who booked them a romantic weekend in the Lakes, she turned up and it was a tiny 2 man tent on a campsite and it was bucketing down. She just did a 3 point turn in the car and took then to the a pub down the road that did rooms and ended up paying. It took her 3 years to ditch him - don't let it take you that long!!

There's quite a difference between £30 and £500.

I understand why you wanted to move, but you didn't need to choose a £500 hotel, even in London!

If they’re staying in central London and they need a room for a couple of nights at short notice, that’s the kind of money they’d need to spend.

Rexthesnail · 09/10/2025 16:56

HundredMilesAnHour · 09/10/2025 15:51

He made you pay? I’d be staying in the new hotel on my own and having a nice pampering weekend alone, and he can stay in his scuzzy fleapit.

That made me laugh, scuzzy fleapit 🤣

ReadingSoManyThreads · 09/10/2025 16:57

@LondonWoes take yourself out for that walk along the Thames! Don't waste the evening staying in with the sulky prick.

Honestly, you're only 18 months in, and this lack of effort this early in a relationship is speaking volumes. I'd certainly be reconsidering this relationship. I hope you don't live together, but even if you do, I'd be calling it off this weekend, or right after.

Refund him ticket price and sell on at a profit to someone queuing for returns? Make up some of the £500?

I’m kidding, but I’d be internally thinking about it especially if he’s sulking. Honestly, at £30 a night he’s got to have expected it’s a dump with potentially bed bugs and possibly worse.

ginasevern · 09/10/2025 16:58

Fucking hell OP. Is your partner 14 years old? Maybe he'll take you to Laser Quest. Seriously, eat your messy Five Guys perched on the corner of your bed, go and enjoy Hamilton and bin the man child on your way home.

BauhausOfEliott · 09/10/2025 17:01

LondonWoes · 09/10/2025 16:18

He’s just let me know he’s ordered our dinner and is picking it up, because apparently the restaurant reservation wasn’t actually a reservation.

it’s five guys. Because I like burgers and it’s a “treat”

I don’t know whether to laugh or cry

OMG, dump him. The hotel thing I could just about put down to naivety, but getting a Five Guys takeaway for dinner at 4.30pm on your birthday as well? Jesus. Get rid of him.

pinkyredrose · 09/10/2025 17:02

How the fuck does he think a windowless dive of a room and a takeaway burger is acceptable? Is he tight or just thick?

At least he's shown you how not important you are to him. What's the betting that if/when you dump him he'll go round telling people 'i took her to a hotel and a show in London, took her for dinner and everything and then she dumps me'!

What are his good points?

No other posts required! Send him back to his £30 HMO.

Wonder how much the ski lodge cost him?

He has the nerve to be grumpy?

Get the hotel key, get the tickets, leave the hotel for the theatre and then dump him and have a lovely night by yourself.

Honestly, why would you want to spend the weekend with him?

VickyEadieofThigh · 09/10/2025 17:08

I stayed at the Premier Inn Hub at Kings Cross a couple of weeks ago and that cost me £336 for 3 nights, booked a fair way in advance. Staying more central was far more than I was willing to pay - but £30 a night! You can't pay that at a Travelodge in the arse end of a shite town these days.

BasicBrumble · 09/10/2025 17:11

I really really hope you love hamilton! It really is fab and deserves better food to go with it, but you can still enjoy it. Let us know!

pinkyredrose · 09/10/2025 17:07

Exactly. I think he’s over promised himself to OP, blown his budget skiing and now he’s being tight. He should have owned up early “sorry OP I overstretched myself. Do you mind if we just do dinner, theatre and one night in London? I’d rather do one nice night than three shit ones”. It would have come over much better.
