“We need to stop importing people who hate us”

Overheard an older couple of Caribbean couple talking about the Manchester attack on the train earlier and one of
them used this phrase.

Someone else (who was getting off at the time) shouted at them “You can’t say that! It’s hate speech!”

I didn’t get involved.

Was it hate speech?

OP posts:

No. It was the truth.

Complet · 03/10/2025 21:18

Get some noise cancelling headphones, read a book, or listen to a podcast in order not to have to listen to other people’s conversations. You could even use that time to read a variety of material to form your own opinions on what is hate speech so you don’t have to ask an internet forum in order to know what to think? Just an idea.

HermioneWeasley · 03/10/2025 21:19

Sounds like a sensible view to me

ShesTheAlbatross · 03/10/2025 21:21

I don’t think it’s hate speech.

I think it’s fucking stupid though.
Firstly, we don’t import people. They aren’t goods.
Secondly, how could you possibly police that. Unless what you really mean is “we should stop letting Muslims in”. In which case, piss off.

AnneLovesGilbert · 03/10/2025 21:21

No it’s bang on the money. “Hate speech” is becoming meaningless.

QuickMember · 03/10/2025 21:23

It’s true what they said. So they were Caribbean? I’m guessing like me they’re fed up of how foreigners are perceived thanks to those who do in fact hate this country and are very open and proud about it.

No. It was the truth.

So how do you know which of the brown people have been ‘imported and hate the country’ or do you not care?

Unfortunately there are extremists and people full of hatred that target the innocent. From all backgrounds.

I am of an age where I remember the IRA attacks in the U.K.

I remember the IRA. Did anyone mention skin colour ?

Bananadramaa · 03/10/2025 21:31

I would just roll my eyes and like someone else advised - noise cancelling headphones on trains to avoid listening to nonsense.

clipboardz · 03/10/2025 21:35

What's that got to do with the OP

clipboardz · 03/10/2025 21:37

I don't think it would be classed as hate speech as that didn't specify who the people are other than they hate us.

You could levy that at most MNs threads and what would then be the point of MNs

HighHoe · 03/10/2025 21:43

I don’t think the important issue is whether it’s “hate speech” but whether it’s true.

It is, and there is no logical reason for disagreement with it which is not based on hatred of or wish for detriment to the population of our country.

EasternStandard · 03/10/2025 22:02

How is the yanbu / yabu voting meant to work? You need the options

coxesorangepippin · 03/10/2025 22:02

It's the truth.

Why all these young men are allowed into the UK begs belief

AramintaWildbloode · 03/10/2025 22:03

I think this illustrates the difference between racism and cultural clash.

I believe much of the horrible swing towards Reform is driven by the latter rather than the former.

Lumping those who have genuine concerns about immigration in with die hard white supremacist types is akin to calling “gender critical” women homophobes.

I am a lifelong labour voter but I have come to see that there is a very valid basis to worry and the left helps nobody by pretending it is all mean minded bigotry and we can easily coexist harmoniously when many immigrants hold such fundamentally different values and beliefs.

That would only be possible without extremism and extremism seems to be increasing all the time.

America deals with this quite simply - you swear allegiance to the flag. I guess for the UK it’s King and country. But in both cases what it really signifies is not attacking your neighbours in the same country, whatever their background.

Internet forums are used for discussion and debate. Just an idea.

Endofyear · 03/10/2025 22:25

I just think it's ignorance. The vast majority of immigrants to this country are living, working and contributing to society. The health care and social care sector are full of fantastic people from all over the world, doing jobs that are hard and not particularly well-paid. You can't stop all immigration because of a few evil people - plenty of terror attacks have been perpetuated by British born people.

You think swearing allegiance to a flag is going to stop terrorism?? 🙄

I think we need to be honest about a difficult reality…many parts of the world hold values and societal norms that are fundamentally incompatible with those of the UK. I would love to believe that every human being is inherently good, but that simply isn’t true. In far too many societies, practices like child marriage and the routine abuse of women are not just tolerated but normalised. These views are upheld, not by fringe extremists, but by ordinary people.

It is not acceptable for those attitudes to be imported here. We have fought too hard and come too far in terms of women’s rights to allow misogynistic norms to take root in our society. Men who have been socialised in environments where violence and subjugation of women are everyday realities should not be given free rein to bring those mindsets into this country.

I say this as a British Sikh woman. I am not islamaphobic nor am I seeking approval by appeasing anyone (as I am often accused of when I share my views online).

And quite frankly, I am tired of the middle class tendency to posture and virtue signal under the guise of compassion. This superficial moralism may make some people feel enlightened, but it does nothing to protect women.

I came to say this, but pp has already said it and more eloquently than I could have done.

Hear, hear. This is the absolute truth!

very well said .
