To want a coffee shop with a no children policy

Amiterriblex3 · 28/09/2025 11:51

In a coffee shop and have to listen to a bunch of 2 year old screaming, absolutely screaming at the top of his lungs. Their mothers might be immune to such noise but I am not. I would be embarrassed if my child screamed like that

In that case can we also have a coffee shop with

  • NO teenagers (the loud ones are more annoying that noisy small children IMO)
  • No phone calls
  • No anyone with a loud voice
  • No one with a certain accent…

there are lots of irritating people in the world but they do actually have the right to exist in public

Also, lots of places need as many customers as possible to stay open with the price of commercial rent

And no dogs, crocodiles or giraffes please.

Oh please, couldn't we have just one giraffe?

@MoreDangerousThanAWomanScorned my boys have just turned 3 and 1. I really wouldn't take it personally. But maybe that is because if I ever had the chance it would be nice to meet a friend alone in a child free zone that isn't a pub.

I wouldn't take it personally as a parent of small children - and I would also happily go to a child-free cafe with a friend at the weekend. But what I wouldn't do is take my kids in the week to a cafe that doesn't allow kids at the weekend - not because I'd be offended, but because it would make me feel that children weren't actually wanted at all. Which is fine, but I think would be a problem for most cafes to lose a big section of the much more limited mid-week customers. Obviously there are adults without children who want to go a cafe during the week but in many places not enough. I think in most areas a child-free cafe would do really well at the weekend but would struggle in the week. As I said, it might be different if they're in a location that would get a lot of custom from nearby workers in the week - though then people will almost inevitably start to use it for meetings/working (including phone calls), which most people find equally annoying in a different way!

Agree - no kids venues please !!

What about people who talk really loudly, chew with their mouth open, cackle constantly?

All less annoying than children screaming, which goes right through my nervous system.

sumayyah · 29/09/2025 18:09

I've been to cafes that had two rooms to it.
The main area with the counter and a smaller area with door labelled quiet zones

If this were more widespread it would sort the problem of keeping wider clientele while giving an area for those who struggle with noise

It’s called a coffee machine at your own home .

ApplebyArrows · 29/09/2025 18:20

Never see any kids at the coffee shops in my town; perhaps I go at the wrong times of day.

cornflakecrunchie · 29/09/2025 18:30

Okaaay, will share one of my fave places, but don't all rush at once & spoil it..

Then you need the Old Barracks Coffee Shop in Ireland.

Why do people always bring up dogs on threads about children? They’re not remotely the same. Apparently.

I've seen a dog peeing under the table in a pub. Then the waiter patted the dog and continued making sandwiches, without washing her hands. Gross. And I'm scared of dogs too 🐕

Entirely different from children

I have never seen a dog pee in a cafe or pub. However, I have seen parents change nappies on tables, and one time saw a mum get her small child to pull down their trousers/pants and use a potty right in the middle of a cafe.

That's gross too!

I hear you. I have 2 children of my own and whilst shopping today there was a toddler screaming at the top of his/her lungs. As much as I sympathise with the parent, it really did get on my tits! The noise was horrendous and went on for way too long.

Winfield · 29/09/2025 18:56

I always took my kids outside if they screamed, because I didn’t think it was fair to impose them on others !

having said that there’s lots of child friendly that you can take your toddlers to, plus the kids wouldn’t be bored !

It's a gap in the market for sure.

Society is getting louder and louder.

No it’s bloody not, society is just getting more intolerant 🤣

Wildefish · 29/09/2025 19:21

Arn’t you lucky then that you could leave, poor mother maybe has to listen to that 24hrs a day. Seriously though, a coffee shop is a business and perhaps without mums and kids they wouldn’t be able to make a profit.

Needlenardlenoo · 29/09/2025 19:25

Of course it's getting louder, because nearly everyone has a powerful device in their pocket or bag that can play video at whatever volume they like, and has no headphone jack.

I am in my 50s and it's much, much easier to make antisocial noise than it was when I was a kid.

And parents (including other people's parents) and random elderly ladies who didn't even know you, were much more likely to tell you off for making a racket.

Needlenardlenoo · 29/09/2025 19:27

All three of the play cafes in my town went bust as parents stay ages and don't buy that much.

It's not a great business model.

I can see why we've ended up with Peppa Pig in Costa.

SemiRetiredLoveGoddeess · 29/09/2025 19:28

Dog free cafes. Yes please. Bring them on.

Plenty of them exist already. Knock yourself out.

That is a fantastic idea - I’ve never seen it, but should definitely be adopted in more places

Or people. People are the problem at the end of the day.
