To want a coffee shop with a no children policy

In a coffee shop and have to listen to a bunch of 2 year old screaming, absolutely screaming at the top of his lungs. Their mothers might be immune to such noise but I am not. I would be embarrassed if my child screamed like that

I know they scream which is why I want a coffee shop with a no children policy.

Open one then. Mose realise if they alienate a whole group oh people they probably won’t last long.

My local small one doesn't allow kids! It's not explicit - but they refuse to sell anything that isn't coffee or water. So no orange juice, 'babyccino' or anything like that. Their cakes all contain alcohol or nuts as well, so typically not things suitable for children. No space for prams and no high-chairs either.

I'm quite a fan - whilst it doesn't say 'children aren't welcome' it's pretty evident when you walk in. 😃

Edit - and just to say to those who clearly think any shop operating such a policy would fail...mine definitely isn't! There's usually a queue before it even opens on a Sunday 😉

I bet the parents wish it was a No Children café too and they can tie their kids to a post outside.

Tablesandchairs23 · 28/09/2025 12:16

Maybe you shouldn't go out in public.

Find a local 5 star hotel. Usually they have lobbies with cafe’s available. Less screaming kids. Ultimately a calmer/ more serene and elegant setting

I think you're all talking about a library. OP open a library and quiet cafe fusion place. It will be like in the movies, every time someone makes a noise everyone can automatically and simultaneously say SHHHHHHH and look really judgemental as they do.

Our library has free tea and coffee so op could go to hers if that's the same? They also don't mind the teenagers studying taking in a sandwich so she could buy a cake and eat it. However, libraries have lots of things going on, including storytime and craft for toddlers and no one is shushing anyone. Well unless it's a reference library I suppose.

Readyforslippers · 28/09/2025 12:18

I'd be up for a no phones, tablets or other noisy devices cafe. I find it so sad when these are used as calming techniques, children miss out on so much with their eyes fixed on a screen. It's also annoying to hear lots of loud half conversations, or the volume of multiple short video clips being watched.

At different times I'd also be keen on a no dogs cafe.

Children-wise, generally I like children that are either well-parented or well-behaved, but agree if the child is screaming then take them out or try at least to calm them.

I'd also put a ban on those loud people who are always bragging about how wonderful they think they are, except they just seem rather annoying.

Also, giggly groups of students.

Also smelly people, good or bad, some people just smell really strongly.

Maybe I should just have a cup of tea at home...

I’d pay the OP €10 for an americano if there was a no children policy.

I’d pay premium prices anywhere to be child free.

The "quiet coffee shop".

It could catch on.

Even parents don't want to hear other people's children!

Yes please. With sofas and books as well 😁

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 28/09/2025 12:19

You can probably find them within children near offices etc. In a residential area, they probably rely on parents with young kids for business during the week

WildFlowerBees · 28/09/2025 12:19

I get it toddlers scream, kids shout and yes it’s annoying. I too would like a child free space and a phone on silent only place.

Those of us that don’t want to always accommodate children are seen as the worst of humanity. Reality is we’re tired of being subjected to other people’s parenting or lack of.

I’m sure most of us that like child free spaces would be happy to be around them if they weren’t disrupting everyone else.

If your kid is running about, making a nuisance of themselves, parent them don’t expect everyone else to tolerate it because they’re just children.

I would prefer a cafe like yours- usually kids = infections/viruses as well. I wouldn’t want little timmy running around rubbing bogies everywhere

Imisscoffee2021 · 28/09/2025 12:21

I'd rather ban the many people watching reels or sports out loud on phones tbh, dreadful these days, oh and on trains too!

SatsumaDog · 28/09/2025 12:22

YANBU. One of the reasons I don’t eat out any more. Yes, toddlers scream. Mine did it once in a cafe. He was picked up and removed by me and told exactly why, leaving our drinks and food behind. Funnily enough, he never did it again.

Could you go to a library? Ours has comfy chairs and you can eat/drink in the none reading part

Spookyspaghetti · 28/09/2025 12:22

I think banning other humans is quite unpleasant and I’d rather be around someone else’s screaming child than around many entitled adults. Especially as the place would probably be packed to the ceiling with dogs.

Absolutely this.

Bearbookagainandagain · 28/09/2025 12:25

I wish there were more coffee spaces for parents with children, so we don't have to take our 2yo in a crowded space with tiny tables and overpriced latte... All it needs is a small enclosed areas with some books and toys in a corner.

YABU for the judgemental "I would be embarrassed...", 2yo is a horrible age, parents do what they can.

89DaysToLoseIt · 28/09/2025 12:25

YANBU.

For some reason people with children see this type of question as an insult to them. The truth of it is I just don’t want to be around kids 24/7. I’d also pay more for child free flights.

TotallyUnapologeticOmnivore · 28/09/2025 12:25

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 28/09/2025 11:57

I mean if we go down this road we could all ban things we don’t like eg loud telephone conversations, loud in person conversations , people sitting on laptops, business meetings, etc

Or is this one of those posts trying to make out children are some how equivalent to dogs? Having read a post wanting dog free cafes?

I'd pay over the odds to sit in a child-free and dog-free cafe. It's not really much to ask. Just a few small, quiet, civilised spaces where brief respite from an increasingly noisy world can be had for the price of a coffee.

WeeGeeBored · 28/09/2025 12:27

Maybe the kids in your area generally behave like this? But where I live I have never had a problem with kids in any of the coffee shops I frequent. So I do not vote for child free cafes.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 28/09/2025 12:27

I’d love a kid free, phone free, dog free cafe!

I realise I’m in the minority so I stay at home and revel in the peace when my new neighbours with their screamy toddler go out!

Cherryicecreamx · 28/09/2025 12:28

I like the idea of a quiet reading cafe. Away from technology. Not only am I fed up seeing everyone glued to their phones, but people can be taking phone calls & meetings etc which will be nice to have a space away from it all. Loud calls can feel just as disruptive.
I'm thinking treat it like a library where children are allowed but it's known we all have to keep the noise down and to leave otherwise. Generally you should anyway but a place like this it's highlighted.. can even have signs on the wall 🤣

TheCurious0range · 28/09/2025 12:31

There's a coffee shop near me that does an off grid quiet session for 2 hours on a Monday, ostensibly to cater for sensory needs but I love it. Coffee, no phones, no children, no laptops, just people sitting quietly sometimes reading books drinking coffee
