Violet Affleck is clearly warning parents about the affect of Covid on children, so when will our children get finally get air filters in their schools/nurseries?

I genuinely can't believe that the government/department for education are able to continue to ignore the now overwhelming, crystal clear evidence that Covid harms children's health. Violet Affleck gave a powerful, well documented, speech at the UN this week laying it all out and the media response? Accuse her of 'health anxiety'!
Other countries are taking action on indoor air quality to protect children in learning environments (e.g. France, Belgium, Germany, Thailand, Australia).
Bridget Philipson herself was shouting about ventilation and air filters before the election.
But still, nothing!
The department for education also had THEIR buildings upgraded so they have great indoor air quality, as did the Houses of Parliament, as do many private schools, as do DAVOS when the world leaders meet.
ALL of our children deserve clean air and to be safe in the classrooms/nurseries.
Why are we so bad at protecting our kids? Repeated Covid infections are ruining their health. ONS said in 2024 that we had over 111,000 children with long covid in Scotland and England alone.
It is SO simple to achieve this. The fact that we are doing nothing is shameful. Open the windows, get air filters, use a CO2 monitor to monitor the air. THAT IS IT. Why is that hard?

After Covid I got HEPA filters for each room of our home . It’s really improved my dc lives

MidnightPatrol · 27/09/2025 10:56

She’s got OCD and health anxiety. Still wearing a mask now for fear of covid when you’re not immuno-compromised in some way is bonkers.

What are the long term harms of covid to children? It’s just a bug like any other now surely - and they need exposure to bugs to develop their immune systems.

I don’t disagree indoors (and outdoor) air quality is an issue due to pollution / car fumes etc however. I suppose indoor air quality will eventually get the attention of outdoor air quality.

AnnaMagnani · 27/09/2025 10:58

I thought she was warning us about the serious threats to your mental health of being the child of a celebrity.

And how nepotism is alive and well.

Zhu · 27/09/2025 10:58

Air quality because of pollution yes. Trying to avoid catching Covid at this stage is madness. That ship has well and truly sailed.

DiscoBob · 27/09/2025 11:00

Well it probably harms most people's health. Sadly we are just going to have to learn to live with it. Not hiding behind protective screens with filtered air and wearing masks that cover our entire face.

I think Violet Afflek sounds like a possibly mentally unwell and rather out of touch with reality young woman. COVID harms poor people more than any other group. That's the group that are most vulnerable. But it is part of our lives now.

What improvements have you seen

TheKeatingFive · 27/09/2025 11:09

Violet Affleck clearly has significant mental health issues. I've no real idea why we should listen to her about anything.

Handsomesoapdish · 27/09/2025 11:10

Mechanical ventilation systems will never in my opinion be better than taking the German approach and opening windows each day. I’m an engineer and worked in construction for many years and one of the biggest gripes I have with modern heating and ventilation systems is the endless time and money that homeowners have to put into maintaining them. While larger organisations can take on staff specifically charged with doing that smaller homes and smaller organisations are much more likely to suffer with sick building syndrome from it not being carried out properly.

Who cares what Violet Affleck thinks about anything?

Who the f**k is Violet Affleck and what are her qualifications?

Privileged, indulged, nepo-baby with MH issues.

TheKeatingFive · 27/09/2025 11:23

A more pertinent question is why a 19 year old with zero qualifications on the topic gets to address the UN.

There are serious long-term impacts of long covid on young people. There is loads of evidence of this. It is true that covid is here to stay and we're going to have to live with it, but the fact that this young woman had famous parents shouldn't mean that she isn't allowed to speak about it.
Yes, she has a platform because of her parents, but so what? Here we are, discussing the effects of covid. We probably wouldn't be talking about it if it had been mentioned by someone we weren't familiar with.
Well done her for using her fame to start conversations.

lljkk · 27/09/2025 11:38

Why don't YOU volunteer to fund air filters and CO2 monitors in your local schools, OP? On an ongoing basis for years to come. Please put your money where your mouth is.

Ignore the evidence that HEPA filters don't stop people in classrooms catching covid.

We need actual public health experts and epidemiologists to be discussing this, though, not celebrity-adjacent lay people. It just feeds into the "anti-expert" narrative.

We live in a busy area on a main road and my dc are asthmatic. Their symptoms have greatly improved (no hospitalisation since getting the HEPA filters). I’ve also noticed less dark dust on windowledges at the front of house (pollution presumed?) .
We’ve also noticed less illnesses in general and especially if one dc is unwell it used to be inevitable they all got it but that doesn’t happen anymore.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 27/09/2025 11:43

As an aside, we know that huge numbers of school buildings are crumbling due to years of neglect due to underfunding. I don't think HEPA filters in classrooms, which as a PP points out have no good quality evidence, are a spending priority.

PopcornIcecream · 27/09/2025 11:43

cramptramp · 27/09/2025 11:12

Asthma improvement , less illness and much better school school attendance for the 2 at school.

I agree, but they DO discuss it, and it gets lost in the layers and layers of news that is created every day. At least we're talking about it now.

Upstartled · 27/09/2025 11:44

Urm, we have hvac system in the house and, good as it is for keeping the air in the house fresh, it doesn't magically stop up catching colds from outside the house and passing it on to each other.

NoisyLittleOtter · 27/09/2025 11:46

What are Violet Affleck’s qualifications in the field of public health? Genuine question.

Aimtodobetter · 27/09/2025 11:46

Do you have shares in a HEPA filter distributor or manufacturer? If I want my kids to have better quality air I tend to try and get them running around outside or open a window - but I don’t assume I can keep them preserved from widely distributed respiratory viruses and indeed low level exposure is the reason these won’t be as bad for them long term (the entire reason that COVID was such a big deal was that it was new and so we didn’t have natural protection - I’d rather my kids kids build up natural protection personally (or by vaccine where relevant)).

NuovaPilbeam · 27/09/2025 11:48

Children do not need to be breathing filtered/sterile air. Its actually not good for your immune system to never be exposed to anything.

Its perfectly effective to open windows for adequate ventilation. Violet affleck is a teenager from a generation who are overly anxious, lack resilience and had their mental health catastrophically impacted by the global panic stricken response to covid.

Cynic17 · 27/09/2025 11:48

Violet Affleck is not a scientist. She is a celebrity child who has a platform because of her famous parents.
I do feel quite sorry for her, because she clearly has mental health difficulties, and her parents have pandered to them rather than getting her proper help. She is a representative of a lost generation of young people who fell for Covid hysteria and are now no longer able to assess risk or face the real world. Let's not pass that on to the next generations.

I was actually sceptical about them first but got desperate when my childrens asthma wasn’t improving and they were getting respiratory viruses so often they didn’t have time to fully recover between illnesses. We had tried everything else and thought it was worth a try. We do live in a city though so it’s not an option for us to just get out for ‘fresh air’ as it’s not fresh and so many more people smoke and vape now too.
