Violet Affleck is clearly warning parents about the affect of Covid on children, so when will our children get finally get air filters in their schools/nurseries?

I genuinely can't believe that the government/department for education are able to continue to ignore the now overwhelming, crystal clear evidence that Covid harms children's health. Violet Affleck gave a powerful, well documented, speech at the UN this week laying it all out and the media response? Accuse her of 'health anxiety'!
Other countries are taking action on indoor air quality to protect children in learning environments (e.g. France, Belgium, Germany, Thailand, Australia).
Bridget Philipson herself was shouting about ventilation and air filters before the election.
But still, nothing!
The department for education also had THEIR buildings upgraded so they have great indoor air quality, as did the Houses of Parliament, as do many private schools, as do DAVOS when the world leaders meet.
ALL of our children deserve clean air and to be safe in the classrooms/nurseries.
Why are we so bad at protecting our kids? Repeated Covid infections are ruining their health. ONS said in 2024 that we had over 111,000 children with long covid in Scotland and England alone.
It is SO simple to achieve this. The fact that we are doing nothing is shameful. Open the windows, get air filters, use a CO2 monitor to monitor the air. THAT IS IT. Why is that hard?

Well I’ve had COVID at least 3 times. It wasn’t a barrel of laughs but I’ve had worse hangovers.

Well, then, think yourself lucky you weren't hit harder by it, like many people have been and continue to be.

I don't count myself lucky. I count myself as experiencing the statistical norm. I don't come home from a 200 mile drive thanking my lucky stars that an artic didn't plough into me, neither do I celebrate being in the 99.9% of experiencing unpleasant respiratory symptoms for a week or so, without the rare complications or post-viral malaise often labelled 'long-COVID',

If you were the statistical anomaly and suffered from severe complications from COVID, I am sorry to hear it and I wish you well.

I see myself as neutral, not lucky.

Well, unlucky to have lived through a period where the population and government lost their heads. None of those in charge were good enough to be a 'man' in Kipling's definition "...if you can keep your head where all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you" So we all suffered.

Lucky, I suppose that Rishi made that trip home from the States to stop Boris, Sajid et al making all the same mistakes all over again at Christmas 2021. That perhaps the only point I've experienced "luck" through this ridiculous panic. Oh and the fact that there was a small window that allowed me to have a proper wedding without masks, social distancing and all the other crap they inflicted on us.

I count myself lucky that I don’t minimise the number of children with long covid. That would make me a monster.

I don't need to minimise it. The stats do that on their own. I'm far more worried about my son having to put up with some of the "controls" we suffered 2020-22 and the fear that was pedalled, and is still being pedalled.

Yes me too. The second time I was just a bit tired for a few days. Thought I had Covid nailed. To be honest even the Covid that left me with long Covid was quite mild. At no point did I need to go to bed.

My doctor says they don’t have any idea why some people get LC and others don’t. Don’t think it won’t happen to you if you keep getting covid.

If you played chess you'd play online or from behind a Perspex screen, defending your queen from a single pawn.

When has @Everanewbie been screaming?
The only screaming I've ever encountered have been the 'ME ME ME!!! YOU NEED TO MASK UP FOR ME!!! CHILDREN ARE DISEASE SPREADERS WHO SHOULD BE LOCKED AWAY!! But I won't wear a mask because 'reasons'.. you all need to restrict your lives so I can do what I want!!!'

Mumsnet and general SM full of them who have congregated and 'found their tribe'.

Figur · 15/10/2025 12:10

Which specific post on this thread has said that?

Figur · 15/10/2025 12:19

Do some people think that air filters are the same as lockdowns?

Do some people think that people who struggled a lot in lockdown were all also spared from long covid in their families?

I can understand why those who really loved lockdown may not want things like air filters - lower transmission would mean a shorter lockdown.

Tbh I think society is far more at risk from all the recent attempts to downplay the potential seriousness of covid, in so far as if a severe new strain should rear its head, it won't be taken seriously enough. There are already too many people dismissing covid as just a cold or 'well on its way', as you put it, to being so. Virologists have cautioned against getting too complacent, they're certainly not saying it's a cold. If a particularly nasty strain were to hit, we'd be in trouble imo (and so would the NHS) given the levels of complacency these days. Vigilance and fear are not the same thing.

Out of curiosity, are you saying your son is suffering from the factors you mention, or just that you are worried he might? If it's the former, how, assuming you don't mind sharing?

Nobody has said they want masks.

I have only pulled up @Everanewbie for her constant ‘wah it’s vascular’ posts on every thread about Covid or long Covid. When science has shown it is vascular. It’s important to stick to facts in these arguments.

I do not want children to wear masks. I do want everyone to educate themselves about what Covid is nowadays. It’s not just a cold and that narrative is dangerous. We shouldn’t hide ourselves away but we should all be aware the potential impact of getting Covid every year. Or the impact of repeated infections in children.

Luckily, he was born after most of the panic had died down so he wasn't affected. He is doing so well, his speech is fantastic, I'm so proud. But if all the story groups, sensory classes, toddler meet ups, nursery, swimming, playing with his cousins and grandparents wasn't a thing, I really don't think he'd be thriving like he is.

Good to hear he wasn't affected. I do realise lockdown did children no favours in terms of their social development.

Delatron · 15/10/2025 20:16

I was very anti lockdown and hugely opposed to schools closing. Doesn’t mean that I think Covid is just a cold though or that the risk of long Covid is negligible. Like I said critical thinking means you can actually change your opinion - it looks like Covid is more serious than we thought it would be.

I still don’t think lockdown and masks are the answer but there’s a middle ground between that and pretending Covid is just a cold..
