Violet Affleck is clearly warning parents about the affect of Covid on children, so when will our children get finally get air filters in their schools/nurseries?

I genuinely can't believe that the government/department for education are able to continue to ignore the now overwhelming, crystal clear evidence that Covid harms children's health. Violet Affleck gave a powerful, well documented, speech at the UN this week laying it all out and the media response? Accuse her of 'health anxiety'!
Other countries are taking action on indoor air quality to protect children in learning environments (e.g. France, Belgium, Germany, Thailand, Australia).
Bridget Philipson herself was shouting about ventilation and air filters before the election.
But still, nothing!
The department for education also had THEIR buildings upgraded so they have great indoor air quality, as did the Houses of Parliament, as do many private schools, as do DAVOS when the world leaders meet.
ALL of our children deserve clean air and to be safe in the classrooms/nurseries.
Why are we so bad at protecting our kids? Repeated Covid infections are ruining their health. ONS said in 2024 that we had over 111,000 children with long covid in Scotland and England alone.
It is SO simple to achieve this. The fact that we are doing nothing is shameful. Open the windows, get air filters, use a CO2 monitor to monitor the air. THAT IS IT. Why is that hard?

Do you have shares in a HEPA filter distributor or manufacturer? If I want my kids to have better quality air I tend to try and get them running around outside or open a window - but I don’t assume I can keep them preserved from widely distributed respiratory viruses and indeed low level exposure is the reason these won’t be as bad for them long term (the entire reason that COVID was such a big deal was that it was new and so we didn’t have natural protection - I’d rather my kids kids build up natural protection personally (or by vaccine where relevant)).

Maybe this depends on where you live? I’m rural so our air is lovely and yes I just open windows and get a nice through breeze. When I lived in town on a busy road you could sort of taste the air pollution. If you opened the windows you got a lot of fine black dust and I think air filters probably would of helped. This was 20 years ago so I’m hoping it’s not quite as bad as used to be.

FuzzyWolf · 27/09/2025 11:59

Violet Afflect has probably caused a lot of damage to the air quality cause. She’s seen (whether rightly or wrongly) as an uneducated nepo child with MH issues so on the whole people are not going to listen to her and follow her lead.

TheGreatWesternShrew · 27/09/2025 12:10

Well yeah… of course a virus harms health. Isn’t that obvious? It’s an illness.

ApplebyArrows · 27/09/2025 12:14

Opening windows is not terribly viable for much of the year, too much time in underheated environments is also bad for your health and we can't afford to be paying even more in heating bills, not to mention the environmental effects.

parietal · 27/09/2025 12:16

HEPA filters are probably useful for road pollution because in that case opening a window makes it worse. That does not mean they are good for Covid or other viruses.
These are two completely different issues

Oh fgs, don't be ridiculous. Airing the house once a day is perfectly normal behaviour and only needs to be for a short period of time.

However, if people want to kit out their own houses with air purifiers at their own expense, then what's stopping g them?

Aparecium · 27/09/2025 12:17

We would be better (and better off) keeping the central heating off for longer and opening the windows. Put on a jumper before turning the heating on. Keep the heating at the minimum setting possible. The children survived school with the doors and windows open during Covid. We don’t need to go that far, but there must be a better middle ground between natural ventilation and overheated with air filters.

DramaLlamacchiato · 27/09/2025 12:18

Because no one gives a shit about Covid any more. It’s basically less than a cold for most people.

Lem0P0ppy · 27/09/2025 12:19

I’d like non crumbling buildings, rooms with decent windows and aircon first. Far too many kids trying to learn in boiling classrooms and poor learning environments. Many really have no idea how dire school buildings are .

Mymanyellow · 27/09/2025 12:28

Can’t afford books pretty sure we’re not getting air filters any time soon.

This isn’t true. My windows are opened every single day of the year. Much better to air your house than not.

Yes. And books that aren’t falling to pieces, adequate learning resources, pencils, glue sticks etc. HEPA filters are quite a lot way down the priority list for most schools.

Write to your MP. An en masse writing campaign will be more effective than just posting here.

RedToothBrush · 27/09/2025 12:35

We'd do better to address the mental health issues of Violet Afflecks generation and younger, than to go down rabbit holes of filters which, even if scientifically proven, will benefit far fewer than the number of kids with mental health related issues.

She's not acting in a way that's remotely normal or well adjusted by anyone's definition.

Why don't YOU volunteer to fund air filters and CO2 monitors in your local schools, OP? On an ongoing basis for years to come. Please put your money where your mouth is.

Ignore the evidence that HEPA filters don't stop people in classrooms catching covid.

My iPhone blocked that site.

Proudofitbabe · 27/09/2025 12:38

Why should anyone care what Violet Affleck says?! She barely qualifies for a MN thread, let alone a podium at the UN. As someone with similar credentials (ie none) I think classroom air quality is fine.

It's researchgate, it's legit, a huge resource of publications and scientists. Sort of like LinkedIn for Science.

FirstCuppa · 27/09/2025 12:39

So many threads on this recently. MN this must be from some HEPA air filtering company, surely?

Violet Affleck clearly has significant mental health issues. I've no real idea why we should listen to her about anything.

It’s really sad to see her anxiety disorders being given an international platform -
it’s so damaging to her and anyone else sucked into her anxious world -
the parents should be supporting her to address the underlying issues here

edwinbear · 27/09/2025 12:43

If there’s spare cash floating about, I think the vast majority of parents would prioritise a couple of extra maths teachers over air filters.

HoppingPavlova · 27/09/2025 12:50

Yes, she certainly is a poster child for mental illness, possibly precipitated by Covid and its societal sequela.

This is no different to the aftermath of the Spanish flu several decades ago. Just open some windows and doors and be done with it without the grandstanding.

After Covid I got HEPA filters for each room of our home . It’s really improved my dc lives

In what way?

Soontobe60 · 27/09/2025 12:56

KimHwn · 27/09/2025 11:34

Feel better now?
There are serious long-term impacts of long covid on young people. There is loads of evidence of this. It is true that covid is here to stay and we're going to have to live with it, but the fact that this young woman had famous parents shouldn't mean that she isn't allowed to speak about it.
Yes, she has a platform because of her parents, but so what? Here we are, discussing the effects of covid. We probably wouldn't be talking about it if it had been mentioned by someone we weren't familiar with.
Well done her for using her fame to start conversations.

The fact that she’s talking utter bollocks is irrelevant I suppose?

Soontobe60 · 27/09/2025 12:54

In what way?

Huge improvement in asthma. Less illnesses.

Soontobe60 · 27/09/2025 12:58

PopcornIcecream · 27/09/2025 11:43

Asthma improvement , less illness and much better school school attendance for the 2 at school.

So are they in schools either air filters things fitted? Do they walk along the busy main road where you live? Because I’m pretty sure there’s far more harmful pollution there than inside your home,
