Violet Affleck is clearly warning parents about the affect of Covid on children, so when will our children get finally get air filters in their schools/nurseries?

I genuinely can't believe that the government/department for education are able to continue to ignore the now overwhelming, crystal clear evidence that Covid harms children's health. Violet Affleck gave a powerful, well documented, speech at the UN this week laying it all out and the media response? Accuse her of 'health anxiety'!
Other countries are taking action on indoor air quality to protect children in learning environments (e.g. France, Belgium, Germany, Thailand, Australia).
Bridget Philipson herself was shouting about ventilation and air filters before the election.
But still, nothing!
The department for education also had THEIR buildings upgraded so they have great indoor air quality, as did the Houses of Parliament, as do many private schools, as do DAVOS when the world leaders meet.
ALL of our children deserve clean air and to be safe in the classrooms/nurseries.
Why are we so bad at protecting our kids? Repeated Covid infections are ruining their health. ONS said in 2024 that we had over 111,000 children with long covid in Scotland and England alone.
It is SO simple to achieve this. The fact that we are doing nothing is shameful. Open the windows, get air filters, use a CO2 monitor to monitor the air. THAT IS IT. Why is that hard?

This. Please tell me she isn't just Ben Affleck's daughter?

…yep

Being a highly valued scientist though Ben might’ve educated his daughter- oh, wait.

Bumdrops · 27/09/2025 13:54

Waste a ton of money on air filters in the classrooms - never gonna happen of course
and then what about all the other air we breathe - shops / leisure centres / transport systems / our houses / workplaces ….

I mean really ????
this is SO bonkers - we might as all go round like buzz light year with a space helmet ( violet and co are as deluded as Buzz) 😂

Barrenfieldoffucks · 27/09/2025 13:54

Indeed. From the title of the OP you would thing some highly renowned international virologist was speaking.

The problem with Violet Affleck is that, much as I am sure she is sincere, she is speaking from a position of absolute privilege.

She criticises parents for pushing the “back to normal” position. But her lockdown was presumably spent in a multi bedroom mansion with access to a gym, a swimming pool, household staff, academic tutors and acres of land.

I’m sure staying in “Covid world” would have been just fine for her.

She wasn’t living in a 2 bedroom flat with no outdoor space. She didn’t have parents who were trying to hold down jobs whilst teaching her to read. She wasn’t trying to do her schoolwork on an iPad shared with her two siblings.

She just has no idea of the reality of the Covid years on the average child. So no idea why we were all desperate to give our children their childhood back.

THIS.

And I wouldn't have a problem with better air quality, but she was all the way in the wrong on that part.

Write to your MP. An en masse writing campaign will be more effective than just posting here.

How do you know she hasn’t? Is social media how you encourage “en masse”

People saying can’t afford to make schools safer for children really need help from somewhere to realise the rich are getting richer and are also protecting themselves from Covid with society’s money

sometimes people have too much time on their hands worrying about the most ridiculous things …. Like the air in a classroom - a sealed environment ?? An airtight tunnel to get to the playground ?? An airtight Eden project style dome for playtime ??
space helmet on to get home ?? 😂😂😂😂😂

This is the second thread I’ve read this week about VA. She’s clearly well meaning, but bless her cotton socks for thinking HEPA filters in primary classrooms will stop small children spreading respiratory viruses.

She’d be better campaigning for better outside space for them to play in.

They can’t even provide subject specialist teachers in most schools.

Mechanical ventilation systems will never in my opinion be better than taking the German approach and opening windows each day. I’m an engineer and worked in construction for many years and one of the biggest gripes I have with modern heating and ventilation systems is the endless time and money that homeowners have to put into maintaining them. While larger organisations can take on staff specifically charged with doing that smaller homes and smaller organisations are much more likely to suffer with sick building syndrome from it not being carried out properly.

Who cares what Violet Affleck thinks about anything?

Yes this! Just open a bloody window.

How are we still banging this Covid drum! It’s a cold, we are human beings who catch colds and get sick. We usually then recover and our immune systems are better for it! Imagine the cost of putting in air purifiers everywhere! It’s a nice thought but there’s far more important things to worry about.

wondersun · 27/09/2025 14:11

You’re completely missing my point. In response to they can’t even afford subject specific teachers.

It’s a cold is a reassuring lie. There are plenty of truths out there. And the effects are cumulative so it’s still worth - human impact and cost wise with absences - in reducing infections.

Or maybe you have a link for it just being a cold…

Fine to think VA is a nepo baby who should never have been given a platform, but us all going la la la with our fingers in our ears about the covid research isn't going to do us any good.

It's not a ship that's sailed - there is some point in trying. Every time a child gets covid and needs to be off school at all their education suffers, even without the possible long-term health effects more and more research is confirming.

The Bradford study in the UK found IIRC a 20% drop in covid when they ran ordinary household HEPA air purifiers in some primary classrooms, and that was with primary aged kids who are in each other's faces all the time and constantly sharing snot. You can imagine the drop being even higher for older kids.

We would never at this point accept teachers smoking in classrooms, or asbestos, or school drinking water coming out of lead pipes. I'm not sure why we're apparently not bothered about kids having fresh air to breathe and being ill less often.

It's the very opposite of tunnels and a sealed environment that people concerned about repeat covid want. It's fresh air and lots of changes of it. Even if we can't implement that straight away it should be a goal, and as parents we're not doing our kids any favours if we scoff at that and say we don't care. Even if it's further down the list it should at least be on the list.

Misdirection, hysterical laughter. This reply looks like health anxiety.

Violet Affleck has chosen to research and speak up.

It feels like anti science is everywhere. And an acceptance of being too busy to think about things so just fingers in ears and lalalalala noises.

ThePeachHiker · 27/09/2025 14:18

I think part of the problem is that children now spend less time outside than average UK prisoner. They are routinely trapped inside and therefore will be at greater danger of respiratory illnesses. Sad we can’t prioritise outdoor learning rather than them sitting stationary staring at a board.

Ellmau · 27/09/2025 14:19

Because no one gives a shit about Covid any more. It’s basically less than a cold for most people.

All of this but way more eloquently put than I can manage.

I’m so tired of the covid deniers who have no stats or substance to their arguments.

And what’s worse is how so many have accepted unhealthy environments for their children under the mistruth that there is no money for better.

Sickness costs money.

The rich, inc. the Houses of Parliament who we pay to make decisions about OUR CHILDREN, have all upgraded their air systems

But oh well, c’est la vie.

I think this depends on the school, my kids go to a relatively small (state) primary and unless it’s bucketing down there are always kids in the playground. Doing the daily mile on the track, P.E on the grass or there’s an outdoor clsssroom aka log benches and a podium.

They are only there for six and a half hours and I think they must spend 2-3 hours outside between breaks and outdoor learning depending on the day.

Health anxiety drives safety behaviours such as advocating for living in an air purified world —
Health anxiety is NOT pointing out the ridiculousness of engaging with such safety behaviours

many virus / infections kill -
basic infection control procedures are paramount and the very vulnerable take extra measures
we cannot let our mortality ruin our existence .. that’s what health anxiety does.

my point is that it is not possible to avoid contaminants
you cannot sterilise the world we live in
covid is here and forever will be
reasonable infection control principles are appropriate

www.ox.ac.uk/news/2024-08-01-new-study-highlights-scale-and-impact-long-covid

I agree . SARS Cov 2 attaches to completely different cell membrane receptors when compared to cold or ‘flu’ viruses and significant evidence is now indicating repeated infections cause accumulative multi organ damage . Long CoVid ( which I’ve had since 2021 ) has really damaged my quality of life . There’s over 2 million of us in the UK trying to struggle along with this wretched condition.

It’s an entirely novel infective agent . HEPA filters will improve air quality in polluted areas but sadly won’t stop reinfections with this ‘orrible thing .
