Violet Affleck is clearly warning parents about the affect of Covid on children, so when will our children get finally get air filters in their schools/nurseries?

I genuinely can't believe that the government/department for education are able to continue to ignore the now overwhelming, crystal clear evidence that Covid harms children's health. Violet Affleck gave a powerful, well documented, speech at the UN this week laying it all out and the media response? Accuse her of 'health anxiety'!
Other countries are taking action on indoor air quality to protect children in learning environments (e.g. France, Belgium, Germany, Thailand, Australia).
Bridget Philipson herself was shouting about ventilation and air filters before the election.
But still, nothing!
The department for education also had THEIR buildings upgraded so they have great indoor air quality, as did the Houses of Parliament, as do many private schools, as do DAVOS when the world leaders meet.
ALL of our children deserve clean air and to be safe in the classrooms/nurseries.
Why are we so bad at protecting our kids? Repeated Covid infections are ruining their health. ONS said in 2024 that we had over 111,000 children with long covid in Scotland and England alone.
It is SO simple to achieve this. The fact that we are doing nothing is shameful. Open the windows, get air filters, use a CO2 monitor to monitor the air. THAT IS IT. Why is that hard?

Who the f**k is Violet Affleck and what are her qualifications?

Excuse me, but not only is her mum a top spy with near superhuman martial arts skills and unparalleled ability to disguise herself in many Aliases. Her dad is literally Batman!

How much more qualified do you want her to be!

Privileged, indulged, nepo-baby with MH issues.

This, another Greta on the go... 🙄

Growlybear83 · 27/09/2025 13:02

Many schools can’t even afford to pay for teaching assistants, books, and paper nowadays with the budget constraints, so much as I’m sure they would all love to have air filters, it’s beyond the budget of the vast majority of schools.

Opening windows is not terribly viable for much of the year, too much time in underheated environments is also bad for your health and we can't afford to be paying even more in heating bills, not to mention the environmental effects.

Allowing air movement in the home is essential for things like reducing mould spores caused by damp. As my grandma used to say “open the windows to let the germs escape”. She lived to 101

thereneverwasacloudyday · 27/09/2025 13:03

We run out of workbooks, pencils, copy paper, glue sticks etc LONG before the school year runs out every year that we can't afford to replace. Zero chance in hell of the government spending money on air filters in every room. I'm just grateful we can open the windows and air the rooms out regularly, which we do.

CagneyNYPD1 · 27/09/2025 13:05

We use HEPA air filters at home because DH feels it helps him with his asthma. So one in his office, one in the living room and one on his side of the bedroom. He has definitely seen an improvement in his asthma and sinuses. We also air the house as much as possible, even in the middle of winter.

It has had no effect on the virus/illness rate for him, me nor the DC.

I’m very intrigued by Violet Affleck’s credentials which must be extraordinary to be given access to the UN in this way.

Can she not use her mums time travel skills and go back and stop covid?!

RaininSummer · 27/09/2025 13:10

I work in a civil service office where the windows don't even open. Over a week there will be more than a thousand people passing by. Unsurprisingly, I have had COVID at least five times and always seem to feel unwell.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/health/cleaning-products-lungs-damage-cigarettes-smoking-20-day-scientists-warning-a8214051.html

Cleaning products and so called air fresheners present more of a problem, but given who produces them, there's virtually no chance of anyone addressing this issue.

Catching covid is unavoidable, filters won't prevent it. Good lung health can be promoted though.

I don’t think cleaning products gave me 2 years sod Long Covid hell thoough

The problem with Violet Affleck is that, much as I am sure she is sincere, she is speaking from a position of absolute privilege.

She criticises parents for pushing the “back to normal” position. But her lockdown was presumably spent in a multi bedroom mansion with access to a gym, a swimming pool, household staff, academic tutors and acres of land.

I’m sure staying in “Covid world” would have been just fine for her.

She wasn’t living in a 2 bedroom flat with no outdoor space. She didn’t have parents who were trying to hold down jobs whilst teaching her to read. She wasn’t trying to do her schoolwork on an iPad shared with her two siblings.

She just has no idea of the reality of the Covid years on the average child. So no idea why we were all desperate to give our children their childhood back.

NapoleonsToe · 27/09/2025 13:19

OP, could you link to papers showing this now overwhelming, crystal clear evidence that Covid harms children's health please? Then to papers which shows that HEPA filters in classroom reduce this harm to children's health?

Bringmeahigherlove · 27/09/2025 13:20

We can’t even get glue sticks so you might be waiting a while.

Agree. I was in lockdown with a 12 month old in a small flat from which my husband was home working. No nearby green areas. It was hell. We are in a nice house with a garden now but I will never support putting families through what we went through 5 years ago.

The Covid 19 enquiry Module 8 Children and Young People starts the public hearings on Monday, September 29th. The timetable for the Module 8 hearings will be on the Covid enquiry website.

After the preliminaries with speeches by core participants or their legal representatives, there will probably be a mixture of evidence from professionals in the form of written witness statements and oral evidence (transcripts and YouTube livestreams); and the same from impact witnesses, who are there to tell their personal experiences. They usually get put on the website the next day. MN posters will be able do a search on Google to look for those written witness statements and/or oral evidence, say

Covid 19 enquiry Module 8 written evidence

I would have thought, there will be experts giving their views on transmission in schools, preventative measures, long COVID…? These might be a more reliable source of evidence for the effectiveness of HEPA filters; than a celebrity’s daughter?

There was also a request “Every Story Matters” for people to write in with their personal experiences. It is closed now; but there might be a summary available of people’s stories about children and young people. There was a 200 page summary of people’s experiences of care homes, for example.

I don't really know any of the facts behind this but I would welcome new windows in my classroom. There are only 2 which open and they are limited to 2 inches. They are also very poorly fitted. The result is sweltering heat on a sunny day and freezing cold all winter with the sound of wind howling on a windy day. Many school buildings are completely unfit for purpose with massive class sizes crammed into tiny unsuitable rooms. There is plaster flaking on the walls in my classroom, hundreds of woodlice and spiders, a smelly stained carpet and a selection of mismatched tables. The door handle is knackered. The projector is knackered. I have enough tables for 32 but many classes are larger so have folding exam desks to wedge pupils in.

Someone has spent money on a study that is now prompting slt's all over the country to insist teachers remove their distracting classroom displays to make their rooms calmer for SEN learners....now the kids can spend the lesson staring at the crumbling walls and filthy paintwork which will help them feel thoroughly depressed as they injest their diet of boring, no fun allowed, knowledge rich retrieval quizes.

It's highly unlikely schools will fit air filters into our classrooms, they can't even afford to fit a door handle that works or pay someone to clean it properly. My opinions based on working in a number of schools over the last 20 years where very little has changed in regard to school buildings but lots has changed in terms of funding reduction and dull ideas about how to get the best out of kids.

Delatron · 27/09/2025 13:27

She is probably doing more harm than good and definitely has health anxiety. So not the best idea to give her a platform.

However, I don’t think people understand yet. But Covid is showing itself to not be like a cold. It’s constantly circulating and with each infection everyone (even healthy young people) do have a chance of getting Long Covid. We don’t seem to be building any immunity.

There’s no money for Hepatitis filters. And I do think we all need to live our lives. But people should take Covid a little more seriously. As you would with flu - don’t go out if you feel ill. Practice good hygiene. Give people the heads up if you are meeting so they can choose not to see you.

I think it would be a good thing for people to educate themselves about what Covid is now. It’s not played out like we thought…and it’s damaging a lot of people’s health. Athletes, kids, perfectly healthy people. So don’t think you’ll be immune to long covid even if healthy and fit. I read somewhere recently that fit people and endurance athletes are more likely to get long Covid.

A more pertinent question is why a 19 year old with zero qualifications on the topic gets to address the UN.

This ^^

Violet is amazing!!

And unfortunately the results on your pool show why were not going to get air filters and UV light in schools (or hospitals).
‘People’ have decided it’s not necessary, over the top, scaremongering etc….
Never mind, our government buildings, the defence ministry, the King’s palace all have them because … yes it protects from Covid (and many other illnesses like the flu, colds or simply allergens).

wondersun · 27/09/2025 13:43

Zhu · 27/09/2025 10:58

Air quality because of pollution yes. Trying to avoid catching Covid at this stage is madness. That ship has well and truly sailed.

The damage is cumulative and well documented. Sadly worse to come to lots of people who needn’t be infected or certainly as infected as often. Look up the fight for clean water, it’s just another bit of history repeating.
