To find it shocking how brazen people are with their hatred of refugees?

Another day, another Facebook post calling for the army to be bought in to stop the boats. Another comment section full of people shouting "sink the boats!" "Use as much force as necessary to stop them!"

There are women and children on these boats and people are brazenly calling for force to be used against them and for them to be sunk, with pictures of their faces next to their comments. Not an ounce of shame. And there's hundreds of them.

I just find it absolutely abhorrent and honestly, really upsetting that so many people have dehumanised asylum seekers to the point they have absolutely no compassion in their hearts to the point they are publicly calling for harm to come to families fleeing war.

AIBU to be shocked that people think this is ok now?

You may have noticed on Mumsnet that people don’t always answer the question you want them to answer.

I put that you are being unreasonable because you are clearly viewing lots of posts from this group so presumably a member but instead of reporting the posts you object to you came to Mumsnet to start a thread on them.

I am not a member, it just came up on my feed like loads of other shite I don't follow or look for. You are clearly imagining that I am viewing lots of posts from this group. I have seen one post with lots of comments. Facebook seems to be showing me a lot of things I don't actually follow or look for these days.

I came here to start a thread about human behaviour and what drives it, which I am perfectly entitled to do. Many people do this daily.

I repeat: To find it boring and incomprehensible that virtue signallers point blank refuse to listen to genuine concerns over mass immigration, undocumented migrants and unacceptable vetting standards for ALL races, cultures and colours and instead keep making these futile attempts to call everyone who disagrees with them a racist/fascist/slur of choice all the while sneering sanctimoniously and clutching their pearls.

Your time is over. Even on mumsnet which has always been white saviour "progressive" paradise people have had enough of being shouted down and called vile names for worrying about genuine things.

You already know every single concern people have. They're not going to shut up. Disingenous "confusion" posts are just dreary and pointless at this stage.

I repeat: If you are bored MOVE ON.

We are all perfectly entitled to discuss whatever we wish. You can't stop us discussing things you don't like, and no one is forcing you to be here.

Why have you read 23 pages of something that is boring you to death?

I think it's fine to allow scrutiny of those who are reliant on the public purse - and I include pensioners in that.

Good grief.

I after working, paying tax and NI for 53 years, I think I'm entitled to spend my pension on whatever the fuck I like, as long as it's things that are legal.

So it seems they can house everyone when they put their minds to it.

The homeless were let in to hotels because they weren’t being used by paying visitors. Now migrants are in hotels which would ordinarily be used for paying visitors. Perhaps those in favour of housing migrants and/or the homeless should lobby the wealthy hotel owners to house them FoC; they can afford to drop profits, right?

Perhaps a really good first step would be for us all to write to our MPs and the media lobbying the government to make housing the homeless a statutory duty. I bet I can count on one hand how many might actually do that… tumbleweed…

What a ridiculous thing to say!

Midnight oil didn’t say anything remotely resembling that?

If you’ve got to make up accusations to argue against it shows a very weak position.

I was referring to the opening post where people on Facebook were calling for exactly that. I have made up nothing.

As you know.

GreenFairy93 · 21/09/2025 21:11

What do you mean they don't work? Work for what? What do you think the goal is?

All I'm doing is pointing out how disgusting some peoples behaviour is. And honestly, I am fucking shocked that 48% of people don't find it disgusting to call for sinking of refugee boats by the armed forces to drown them before they get here. If you think that is remotely acceptable, then there is something wrong with you.

This thread is not about the great boat debate, I'm not trying to convince you all to welcome them with open arms, I don't care what people think about whether they should be welcomed or turned back. I'm simply asking if other people are as disgusted at these calls for violence as I am. That's it. And you apparently think it's an appeal to emotion and idealism to find threats of violence and force against vulnerable people disgusting. That says a lot about you, honestly.

If they won’t turn the boats around at the pint of boarding (like the Belgians successfully did, almost eliminating their small boat problem), I’m all for sinking the boats, so long as it’s done at the shoreline so the migrants can walk back to shore and the boat can’t be used again.

Feel sorry for the homeless veteran I saw. He's got a tent to live in. Quite a few illnesses as well.
He can't get housed but the boat people can. Free board and lodgings etc.
Charity begins at home.

There's a change to homeless legislation that will give veterans priority for accommodation if they're homeless.

I'm not sure of the start date, but it was approved late last year, iirc.

UrbaneProfane · 22/09/2025 08:53

Facebook is a toxic hole where the worst of humanity spout their nonsense.

we should have compassion for ANYONE who’s best option is a perilous crossing away from their families and friends. I can’t imagine being in that position.

yes they’re mostly young men but that’s someone’s son! That was a little boy once. He’s just as deserving of compassion as women and children.

We need better regulation and better systems in place to protect migrants and asylum
seekers so they don’t have to cross in boats. We need a way to protect people in crisis and get our country the help we need too.

for you to pick on that small group of people on those particular posts and try and add to the general misrepresentations of the discussion on immigration in order to shut it down is not ok.

I have done no such thing.

I am pointing out that a group of people have been dehumanised to the point where this is not a problem to many people. I have not made any comment either way on the actual situation of the small boats, or attempted to shut down the wider immigration discussion. It's an important discussion that needs to be had, but it needs to be had with the fact these are real human beings who deserve dignity and respect like everyone else does.

Why are you claiming I have tried to shut the discussion down? Beyond trying to keep the thread on topic that is, because the topic of this particular thread is these posters behaviour and the fact that people are acting like it is acceptable and what has gone wrong for this to be the case, the topic is not whether small boats should be welcomed or sent back.

You’ve made it clear that you are outraged that a few idiots feel able to express their stupid ideas in social media.

What you haven’t shown outrage at, and which would be equally relevant or perhaps more so to this conversation about things to be outraged at, is that we are expected to continue to let actual convicted criminals and terrorists enter our country and pay to support them because they lie. We are expected to believe their lies and are berated when we don’t, and then deal with the consequences of their vile attitudes and behaviour towards women and CHILDREN just because of their sex.

These are not just a few idiots being vile on the internet; these are actual adult men going and physically doing vile things to real people. I know which one I’m more outraged at.

You are conflating two different issues. We can be outraged at people's lack of humanity without condoning criminality.

There you are again painting all asylum seekers as one big faceless group of sex offenders.

It's not about a few idiots spouting their stupid ideas on social media, it's about the current racist climate that makes people feel comfortable doing that. No other group is acceptable to joke about shooting killing and drowning, which proves the dehumanisation of refugees because if you joke about shooting and drowning them it's fine because it's "just a joke", "tongue in cheek", "just a few idiots". If people were tongue in cheek joking about killing Jews there would be an audible gasp from everyone in the room and calls if antisemitism. So why is it fine for asylum seekers? Because they are seen as less than that's why!

The legitimate refugees yes - fine.
The thousands of young working age men who are arriving to sit on their arses, getting everything handed to them, when we can't get GP appointments for weeks, since made even worse by the hotel in the village getting requisitioned - as the GP spends a whole day a week there! and the dentists! they have a whole day a month for the hotel - and the residents don't pay a penny. And i can't afford to get my teeth taken care of at all! Its vile and quite frankly insulting that people expect that those of us who work our arses off to pay our bills get nothing in return but people who contribute nothing, and take evertyhing get it all handed to them!

I have no issue with people who are genuinley fleeing wretched conditions - but the majority of these young men are not!

You seem to be putting your own bad faith interpretation on people’s words again. PP didn’t say ALL asylum seekers are sex offenders. We know that SOME are, we have the court receipts to prove it.

You appear to be missing quite a lot of what is going on in the world at the moment. Jewish people are suffering huge amounts of abuse and harassment and the authorities are slow to deal with it. The BBC has even been caught out lying about a coach load of Jewish children who were subjected to anti Semitic abuse in London.

As I said before, women have been dehumanised as ‘terf’s’ in large numbers and are subject to the most unbelievable amounts of online and real life abuse and harassment. You don’t seem at all bothered about that. You are presenting a very skewed view of things that are happening.

Obviously it’s fine for you to call out the awful comments about asylum seekers you managed to dig up on Facebook. I still can’t see why you are on an obviously political group that mainly posts pictures of the Union Jack (and some cute pet pictures) and instead of reporting those comments, you decide to come and start a thread here.

“If people were tongue in cheek joking about killing Jews there would be an audible gasp from everyone in the room and calls if antisemitism” IF? What do you think “from the river to the sea” means? It’s calling for the annihilation of Jews and the Jewish state. It’s literally Hamas’ stated aim.

This thread itself shows the polarisation, and unfair generalisation of anyone who disagrees that all the men crossing the channel are genuine asylum seekers as being “the far right”, rather than just people who are rightly concerned. One poster even advocated for deporting British citizens and welcoming undocumented men. I didn't notice you objecting to those people being dehumanised as one faceless group of “the far right”.

There was a poster earlier who thinks that Britain is like “1930s Europe” because we don't all agree that welcoming hundreds of thousands of undocumented men is a good thing, and another quoted lyrics referring to Nazis and KKK. The intolerance of those preaching tolerance is absolutely staggering

BundleBoogie · 22/09/2025 14:15

And in case anyone is still labouring under the delusion that being a man on a small boat crossing the channel automatically means you are of impeccable character and will be a huge asset to society, here is a post on X by Raja Miah. He is primarily a campaigner on the Rotherham rape gangs but also an ex Muslim trying to raise the alarm on what is happening more generally. He has some very interesting (and worrying) things to say - it’s an eye opener to say the least.

From his post on X:

For those of you coming late to this, Abdelrahmen Adnan Abouelela is a member of the Muslim Brotherhood. He fled Egypt after he was given a seven-year jail sentence as part of a terrorist bomb-making cell. We housed him in a Hilton Hotel. In return, he raped a woman in Hyde Park. And yes, the authorities knew who he was and of his terrorist links. You'd be a fool to think that Abouelela is the first or last Islamist terrorist to enter the United Kingdom as an asylum seeker. Or that his views towards women in the UK is anything out of character with the hundreds of thousands like him that have arrived.

The government knows that terrorists are entering the country on small boats and is housing them in accommodation where they are free to roam.

When is everyone going to wake up?

What is your view on this @GreenFairy93 ?

Those who are Reform influenced keep say this, about young men strong on their arses, but the reason for that is that we won’t let them work, which I think is a mistake. I’ve heard it said by at least two people who themselves have children abroad. But apparently it’s different!

Disagree with immigration if you want, but fgs stop making monsters of people.

It wasn’t asylum was it? But a humanitarian scheme ie visa that will end at some point.

Yes - and I have just checked regarding indefinite leave to remain;

Special visa schemes for Ukrainians

5 September 2025

the Home Secretary has just announced an extra two-year extension but there is no pathway to permanent residence...

Permanent residence (indefinite leave to remain) is not allowed. This makes the schemes different from standard visas or grants of refugee status, which do allow permanent residence after five years. Both Conservative and Labour governments have said Ukraine will be safe to return to and the visas are therefore temporary, in line with the wishes of the Ukrainian authorities.
