To find it shocking how brazen people are with their hatred of refugees?

Another day, another Facebook post calling for the army to be bought in to stop the boats. Another comment section full of people shouting "sink the boats!" "Use as much force as necessary to stop them!"

There are women and children on these boats and people are brazenly calling for force to be used against them and for them to be sunk, with pictures of their faces next to their comments. Not an ounce of shame. And there's hundreds of them.

I just find it absolutely abhorrent and honestly, really upsetting that so many people have dehumanised asylum seekers to the point they have absolutely no compassion in their hearts to the point they are publicly calling for harm to come to families fleeing war.

AIBU to be shocked that people think this is ok now?

I am utterly shocked that 48% think it's unreasonable to find it upsetting that people are brazen enough to call for boats of refugees to be sunk by the armed forces.

I lost faith in humanity today.

Utterly shocked, losing faith in humanity…

All these appeals to emotion and idealism are pointless. They don’t work and accomplish nothing other then making you feel better.

BundleBoogie · 21/09/2025 19:18

GreenFairy93 · 21/09/2025 16:36

It's not ridiculous at all.

The response to how on earth do people think it is acceptable to call for the sinking of refugee boats by the armed forces to ensure they never make it ashore when there are children in these boats was 'they aren't women or children they are young men'.

That can absolutely be interpreted as it's fine to sink them because it's just men. At no point did midnight oil agree that this behaviour is abhorrent or unacceptable, she justified it.

Why are you so desperate to just gloss over this disgusting behaviour?

I think mainly because you appear to be very focused on an example you have found of the extreme lunatic that likes to hang out on the internet making nasty comments and laughing at tragedies. You and others are then attempting to shut down reasonable debate by lumping us in with those trolls.

I have not seen any examples of the behaviour you describe but if I saw it I would think it was awful, like the vast majority of the people in this forum.

However, even though you really don’t like it, this is a conversation that needs to take place.

Midnight didn’t explicitly condemn it but she certainly didn’t ’justify it’ - that’s just your bad faith interpretation.

Wrong link. I guess building houses for asylum seekers is preferable?
https://www.countytimes.co.uk/news/25229261.powys-cabinet-backs-role-home-office-asylum-housing-pilot/

Well, yes! The post I responded to was about asylum seekers in hotels (which is an inherently unstable means of housing people, and for which limited local planning can be done). The article is about an expression of interest by the council in a pilot scheme involving an injection of cash to build new homes, which will be leased to the Home Office for 10 years to house asylum seekers and then released as general local authority housing stock. It is a structured plan which the article states will have no impact on those currently on the waiting list for housing, and which will attract funding for the building of new housing stock, available to local citizens in the long term, which would not otherwise be available.

I take no issue with economic migration either.

My family migrated here, for a better life. Admittedly “only” from Ireland, but I am still the product of economic migration, it would be hypocritical of me to be offended that others do the same.

Their getting a better life, usually involves work or study, which puts in to the system and supports our economy, higher education system and workplaces.

Are you suggesting that we should have completely open borders? Or do you think we should be able to control who we allow in and give access to benefits and the NHS without ever having paid into the system? Or recruit for the skills we actually need rather than accept whoever rocks up?

Should we allow in criminals as well? They can be economic migrants too. How many jihadists do you think it would be acceptable to have living here?

I think part of the trouble is that some people have literally no concept of the lives sacrificed and the ongoing work to secure our peaceful and democratic society. It sounds like you take it all for granted with no concept of how badly wrong it could all go.

BundleBoogie · 21/09/2025 19:45

SleeplessInWherever · 21/09/2025 18:17

Okay I’ll summarise.

So what if they’re actually people searching for a better life. They’ll either get granted to have one, or they won’t.

If they do - good. They’ll then contribute to the country by working to get that better life, and will be better off themselves. Win/win.

So you’re happy for economic migrants to overwhelm the asylum system with their attempts to remain in the country and stop the claims of genuine refugees from being looked at for years? Are you really thinking this through?

Do you realise that not all ‘economic migrants’ will be here to gain lawful employment which will generate taxes? In fact, it’s quite the opposite for many. Albanian drug dealers or gang members can also be ‘economic migrants’ - please understand who you are airily waving in.

That just shows the madness. Why can't the funds be accessed to build the houses for immediate occupation by people on the waiting list. Why do asylum seekers get first dibs?

Also why were the hotels never opened up and funded by government for our rough sleepers, who largely have to rely on charities for night shelters

Downtrod · 21/09/2025 20:15

They are supposed to seek asylum from the first safe country they come to, instead of traveling through many to get to the uk where many benefits are not means tested!
Thats why people are against them and our government does nothing yet withholds benefits to our own citizens.

Plenty of offensive terms had innocent origins, but the recent use of those terms is what matters in current conversations.

There’s an N word which simply means black in Spanish, and is unacceptable in any context other than a Spanish speaker referring to a colour.

Similarly, see retarded, unless you're discussing engine timing.

Edited

I don't really think you can compare the phrase to the N word or R word to be fair

Hideous use of language!? To call a spade a spade!?

You've totally lost it. As confident wanting the government to have full access to all our bank accounts and go full authoritian state on pensioners.

What an extreme reaction to seeing an asylum seeker behave a deliveroo!

I didn’t say whether I supported or not the government having access, I just posted the link.

I have said nothing about whether this conversation needs to take place or not, that is your bad faith interpretation. I agree this conversation needs to be had.

But, and this is the big but, I started a thread - AIBU to be shocked that people are comfortable saying these things in public now like it is normal and acceptable, and you have twisted it into 'me wanting to shut the conversation down'. I don't care about shutting the conversation down, I care that people think it is ok to act like this in public and aren't ashamed to call for sinking refugee boats and military force. It shows the level of dehumanisation that has occurred.

If you don't want to have the conversation about this behaviour, which is what the thread is about, start a thread of your own and have your all important conversation. No one is stopping you.

Why should people be ashamed of discussing whether military involvement could be helpful and necessary? It’s a reasonable question to ask. It might be deemed unnecessary after discussion, but it’s an option that’s worth considering all the same.

What do you mean they don't work? Work for what? What do you think the goal is?

All I'm doing is pointing out how disgusting some peoples behaviour is. And honestly, I am fucking shocked that 48% of people don't find it disgusting to call for sinking of refugee boats by the armed forces to drown them before they get here. If you think that is remotely acceptable, then there is something wrong with you.

This thread is not about the great boat debate, I'm not trying to convince you all to welcome them with open arms, I don't care what people think about whether they should be welcomed or turned back. I'm simply asking if other people are as disgusted at these calls for violence as I am. That's it. And you apparently think it's an appeal to emotion and idealism to find threats of violence and force against vulnerable people disgusting. That says a lot about you, honestly.

Look at the comments I screenshotted and posted here.

People should absolutely be ashamed of suggesting building minefields in the channel, using torpedoes and snipers to stop them and releasing Orcas into the channel to eat them. If you don't think it's a sign something is very wrong that people feel proud to say those things in the public sphere then you're blind.

Discussing the Navy picking them up and taking them back or using the army to manage queues is a totally reasonable and acceptable conversation to have, but that's not the conversation that is being had. You're being disengeuous trying to frame it as that.

But they’re not ashamed. You wanting them to be so won’t make them so. You seem to think if you just scream long enough and hard enough that they’ll pay attention, or change their mind, or reconsider their views. They won’t. They’ll know your opinion of them, sure, but they don’t care what you think, and you're doing nothing to advance a counter argument.

SleeplessInWherever · 21/09/2025 21:28

I’m not sure we should need to find a counter argument for using torpedoes or snipers against people.

Killing people is wrong. Encouraging others to do so is wrong. That’s a fairly universal fact I would have thought.

I’ve looked at the page you mentioned, searched on boat related posts and the only one with children I could see had comments pointing out that there are almost no children being brought in which afaik is true. No laugh emojis and no calls for them to be sunk.

I can only assume that the group has reacted in the normal way and removed the tiny number of awful posts from the internet loons. So in answer to your rather goady question that seems to imply this is more widespread and accepted than just some rentagobs that get post ridiculous things to get across.

Do you understand how people feel about the issues a bit better now? I’m certainly learning more with each thread.

SisterMargaretta · 21/09/2025 21:39

Are they entering via a verified port and presenting their passports and documents to UK border force? I think not

They can legally enter and claim asylum. If their asylum claim is rejected, they can then be deported. The issue is with the lengthy processing time.

But it will impact those who've been on the housing list, many of them for years I'd imagine. Are they supposed to gladly accept that migrants take precedence over them for new housing? We've well and truly lost the plot.

Feel sorry for the homeless veteran I saw. He's got a tent to live in. Quite a few illnesses as well.
He can't get housed but the boat people can. Free board and lodgings etc.
Charity begins at home.

Lots of comments calling for the boats to be sunk, use snipers, use torpedo's etc. LOTS. No mention of children no, that was somewhere else. But there is not one "rentagob" that has been removed. There is a disturbingly large number of people advocating violent means of preventing refugees making it ashore.

Why are you so desperate to pretend these people don't exist in large numbers?
