My son has gone on the march

funkadelic · 13/09/2025 10:59

Hi, have been on here years but only lurk, don’t post. But today is the day.
I am in bits. My 22yr old DS is in London on this march. I am shaking and utterly appalled. We differ on politics massively and have done for some time. I work in education, have travelled and am bit of a lefty hippy but to be honest it’s becoming more about values and morals. He is fully immersed in the manosphere algorithm and I’ve always thought he is exploring himself and things and have chats about why he has the opinions he does and try and understand his point of view. I try not to belittle him but try and get him to critically think about things.
But this I can’t deal with. I am so upset that my son has gone to this, and that it is something that is so far away from me and my values, something that I thought I had instilled in him as well.
I am totally aware that it’s triggered embarrassment but that is my issue and I’m not putting that on him. He is still my son and I love him and his passion and interest in the world, just in something I believe is so wrong and makes me sad.
Please talk some sense into me.

Why ask questions when you don’t want answers? You don’t like the answers anyone provides and dismiss them, so it’s a pointless exercise.

I have had no answers.

Chenecinquantecinq · 13/09/2025 12:58

Good on him! It's a celbrate Britian gathering you're completely unhinged!

smallpinecone · 13/09/2025 12:58

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/09/2025 12:58

And?

Typical response.

Cynic17 · 13/09/2025 12:58

OP, he is allowed to believe what he believes, even if this means that he doesn't agree with you! It may just be a young person's rebellion, but maybe just be grateful that he is at least showing some interest in the world?
After all, there is nothing to stop him going on a march and not telling you - it's his life, not yours.

Rosybud88 · 13/09/2025 12:59

You are never going to agree on everything - you are two different people. He is an adult with the ability to think for himself which is something I feel you should be proud of. He is a man who is standing up for what he believes in, another thing I feel you should be proud of.

The important part for me is to avoid any divisions between you. You can have different views. That’s ok. Don’t automatically assume he is wrong in everything and I hope he gives you the same grace in return.

TakeMe2Insanity · 13/09/2025 12:18

Far right - tommy uniting the kingdom with his hate. Also the anti racism counter protest.

Through religious channels the police have told muslims, people of colour and overt religious attire to stay home!

My husband and son have gone on the anti racism march for the first half. Am brown and wear a scarf so I’m home.

"Through religious channels the police have told muslims, people of colour and overt religious attire to stay home!"

Evidence, please.

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/09/2025 12:59

Please explain, @smallpinecone , how a 6% minority threatens British culture.

I have had no answers.

You won't get any just cryptic responses and talking in riddles to explain away racism!

Would you like to explain your ambivalence towards violence directed at police?

apricotcobbler · 13/09/2025 13:01

DuncinToffee · 13/09/2025 12:19

What is an example of a far left march?

Antifa.

Goldenbear · 13/09/2025 12:52

This isn't the U.S. though, you need to understand the cultural context of the far right in England. I grew up in London in the 90s and it was an awful time when the racism was heightened, my brother's poor friend beaten up for the colour of his skin. It was around the time of the racist murder if Stephen Lawrence. These were very dark times and being anti racist is not 'Far left' it is not being racist which is morally repugnant!

Neither is being concerned about immigration and the effect it's having on the country means that a person is far right and a racist. I think the protest is aimed at the Government really. People want them to do something. I have heard chants of "Starmer is a wanker" when watching footage of recent protests.

What ambivalence? Violence against police is never justified, whoever the perpetrator. Whataboutery is pointless.

Today's march is for freedom of speech. Good on him 👏🏻

It really isn't

There you go. No discussion, automatically branded a racist. Thank you for proving my point! 😄

OhNoNotSusan · 13/09/2025 13:02

just turned bbc on - it is athletics.
i wonder how racists think about all the immigrants who make up our sports teams? i bet they change their tune then!

I read that the police have told Muslims to go about their business as usual.

You are refusing to discuss with me. Please explain how a 6% minority is threatening British culture. I would very much like to hear your case.

Because sports teams are of paramount importance 🙄

Only if they help the team win.

They are to many people.

bombastix · 13/09/2025 12:43

I don’t see the point of the posts telling the OP that she should be ashamed of her son. What is the point of that?

Young people are their own people and making their way in the world. Older people with entrenched views who are old enough to know better would do well to reflect.

Well said 👏

EarthlyNightshade · 13/09/2025 13:05

apricotcobbler · 13/09/2025 12:18

There are also far-left marches as well.

Where are the far left marches?

A counter protest to the far right is not necessarily far left. There's a whole middle space of right, centre and left.

HelpMeUnpickThis · 13/09/2025 13:05

BorgQueen · 13/09/2025 11:07

Would you have this (over) reaction if he had been going on the pro-Pal marches?
If not, why not?

@BorgQueenIn what way is overreacting?

She seems completely balanced, sensible and considered to me.

Can you show us where the overreaction is?

Also note that you have contributed zero constructive advice in answer to OP’s actual post. At least answer the question asked.

smallpinecone · 13/09/2025 13:05

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/09/2025 13:04

They are to many people.

If they have no other pressing concerns in life. What a luxury!
