My son has gone on the march

funkadelic · 13/09/2025 10:59

Hi, have been on here years but only lurk, don’t post. But today is the day.
I am in bits. My 22yr old DS is in London on this march. I am shaking and utterly appalled. We differ on politics massively and have done for some time. I work in education, have travelled and am bit of a lefty hippy but to be honest it’s becoming more about values and morals. He is fully immersed in the manosphere algorithm and I’ve always thought he is exploring himself and things and have chats about why he has the opinions he does and try and understand his point of view. I try not to belittle him but try and get him to critically think about things.
But this I can’t deal with. I am so upset that my son has gone to this, and that it is something that is so far away from me and my values, something that I thought I had instilled in him as well.
I am totally aware that it’s triggered embarrassment but that is my issue and I’m not putting that on him. He is still my son and I love him and his passion and interest in the world, just in something I believe is so wrong and makes me sad.
Please talk some sense into me.

why is it acceptable for a country like Barbados to be run by Bajan locals and keep the majority of the population black but it's not OK for Britain to keep the majority of its population white? Anyone?

Barbados? Given the colonial history of Barbados, that’s a strange country to use to make your point. Very strange.

CantCallItLove · 13/09/2025 17:07

PollieDarton · 13/09/2025 17:03

And as I’ve already said, you can’t possibly know that.

Oh come on! This is ridiculously disingenuous.

smallpinecone · 13/09/2025 17:07

ThriveAT · 13/09/2025 16:54

No, it's not. I would feel the same if my son joined the throngs of racist yobs marching for racism.

Edited

I’m sure you would, but thankfully that’s not what actually happened.

ExtraOnions · 13/09/2025 17:05

What do you mean “it’s not our way of life” .. it’s very much out way of life - you can wear pretty much wear what you want, we don’t police it (unless you are specifically supporting a designated terrorist organisation).

It’s part of the liberal way of life we all enjoy .. and that these protestors say they are protecting (but aren’t)

If a woman chooses to be veiled, that’s her beeswax. I wouldn’t do it, but nobody is making me.

yes but someone is 'making her' thats the point. In our society we dont want women to be oppressed by men, so it would be nice if we stopped it.

KhakiTiger · 13/09/2025 17:08

Maybe he’s rebelling against your upbringing of him. Maybe you tried to indoctrinate him and he’s not up for far left propaganda anymore.

Uricon2 · 13/09/2025 17:08

This is from the Daily Mail in case anyone thinks it is Left wing biased reporting.

Other speakers included New Zealand Christian fundamentalist Brian Tamaki, who told the crowd: 'Christianity versus the rest. Islam, Hinduism, Bahai, Buddhism, whatever else you're into — they're all false. We gotta clean our countries up.
'Ban any type of public expression in our Christian nation from other religions. Ban halal. Ban burqas. Ban mosques, temples, shrines. We don't want those in our countries.'

On a march for "freedom of speech".

ElatedShark · 13/09/2025 17:09

Depends, does your son want immigration control which should include the millions of brits infesting other countries, like Spain, who are trying to get them out? Or just the blacks who by the way some have been in uk for generations and have family who fought in your precious world wars. I am all for everyone staying in their own countries of origin and leaving other countries resources etc along, but I doubt English would like that as they would lose out massively since we no longer produce anything ourselves of worth

ExtraOnions · 13/09/2025 17:09

So ever veiled woman is doing it because they are forced to ? Don’t talk rubbish.

Women are continually oppressed by men in our culture… some people need to look at the statistics of violence again women and girls, gender pay gap, misogyny in society etc

LizzieW1969 · 13/09/2025 16:38

^Exactly. Ridiculously OTT. And I hate the way VAWG is being used by Tommy Robinson and others as a cynical ploy to provoke this backlash against asylum seekers. They really don’t care about women and girls.

Agree. Most of them will no doubt go home full of booze and take their perma rage out on their wives/partners/families. Utter thugs.

DBSFstupid · 13/09/2025 16:44

What a cliché
3 million people there (according to the police) and they are not all "Thugs and Morons".
A typical blinkered, superior, lefty reply.
This is why we are where we are.

Nope. 110,000 according to the police.
They are behaving pretty thugishly now, from what I can see.

BurntBroccoli · 13/09/2025 17:13

PollieDarton · 13/09/2025 16:56

On a crucial part of the march route from n the city centre where the 88 bus runs past every 5-7 minutes I’d say it’s just as likely not symbolic. And that’s my point about context. It’s like having Greggs as a secret symbol and filming on the high street then being surprised there’s a Greggs in your picture.

You might also see a lot of this

care to answer the question?

Does it really merit an answer? We are not Barbados and neither would we want to be. Or would you?

Anotheremptynester · 13/09/2025 17:14

@ExtraOnions Of course mysogny is also in non muslim cultures, but thats not the issue you originally raised. ...

....back to the point....its one thing to cover your head eg male sikhs, male jews and female muslims...but quite another to wear a veil, which is a hindrance and never seen being performed by males. Its not anything a woman would choose for herself without men manipulating her. Hence it should be banned here, unless you think her rights are less than yours?

Whatafabulousoaktree · 13/09/2025 17:15

Owl718 · 13/09/2025 11:19

You say you aim to be open minded and provide a balanced view to your DS but then have an issue if he doesn’t agree with you.

The fact that you think your views are right and his are wrong shows you are incredibly blinkered.

You are not acting in the way you claim you are. You are trying to indoctrinate him.

Closed minds such as yours are unhealthy. I’m afraid you are a poor role model for your DS.

This.

Your self-righteousness and heart-broken woe that someone you know could have a different view from you is remarkable.

The view that there is only one set of correct opinions is the reason why we are where we are today.

cardibach · 13/09/2025 17:16

PollieDarton · 13/09/2025 16:51

Perhaps it surprises you that there are actually some people who aren’t familiar with secret Nazi codes.

But now you know, now people have told you and given you links, why don’t you understand?

DBSFstupid · 13/09/2025 17:16

@Grumpyoldpersonwithcats
It's way way more than 100,000
I was quoted 3 MILLION - I bet it turns out to be nearly that... more people are trying to get there as I write..depends on what 'Source' you use hey Grumpy.
The silent majority are speaking up.

sounds like these idiot united kingdom think they are american.

pugnaciouspixie · 13/09/2025 17:17

My son and I align politically [to the left]. We agree on most issues...bar one.

We just no longer discuss it. We're never going to find consensus.

CantCallItLove · 13/09/2025 17:17

happydappy2 · 13/09/2025 17:00

I've lived in Saudi Arabia-you abide by their rules or get kicked out. We are too soft in this country, allowing people to be fully veiled-it's not our way of life. Does that make me a racist?

The previous comment you made that was swiftly deleted was the one that indicated you're a racist. Hence the speedy deletion.

Nagginthenag · 13/09/2025 17:18

Where are people getting figure of 3 million from? Or is that what Tommy Robinson is saying 😁?
If there were really that many on the march, they wouldn't actually be able to negotiate their way through the streets.

Some of the protesters appear to have started to throw missiles at the police. What a surprise. Not.

Wilfulignoranceabounds · 13/09/2025 17:18

happydappy2 · 13/09/2025 17:10

care to answer the question?

Regardless of the racial demographic of Barbados, they were ruled by the white Brits for centuries and have the right to independence. The British, on the other hand, having raped, pillaged and colonised most of the world need to deal with the consequences of their actions and accept that immigration is a natural outcome of their history. Also, Britain isn’t even coming close to becoming majority non-white.

JFDIYOLO · 13/09/2025 17:18

Stay open and welcoming to him. He has as much right to his own different views as you do.

Ask and listen. Don't react with criticism and anger; that will keep him on the defensive so he doubles down and digs in.

Ask him to share links to what he's eebn reading.g and watching, because you're intsterested to learn more.

The more you do that the more you'll learn about him and what's going on in his head, where his influences are coming from and where they're leading him.

And do your own research about the bees in his bonnet. The reputable sources, statistics and reports.

I think the Met police who are there and actually do need to know the number in order to do their jobs are a pretty reliable source. Of course, their job is being made much more difficult on account of that not-so-silent not-a-majority flinging bottles at them and attacking them.
