Turn your son in knowing it’s the death penalty?

TaupeLemur · 12/09/2025 15:28

Kirk’s killer has apparently been turned in by his family - or persuaded to hand himself in.
Trump &’his supporters have been very vocal about getting the death penalty for the shooter.

would YOU hand your child over, knowing that the electric chair would be the likely outcome?

YANBU - I wouldn’t turn him in to die.

YABU - I would he’s a killer and deserves all he gets

They possibly still will be.
No doubt some of the far right MAGA fanatics will want an eye for an eye tatic and may go after the next best thing.

Hopefully turning in the son means they won’t. I hope.

Do all gunmen who kill get the death penalty?
If not, why is Trump saying this killer will?

No they dont, Trump wont have the final decision but it looks like it could fit under 2 of the criteria in Utah: Targeted Victims or placing others at risk as well as the intended victim which is perfectly possible in a large crowd such as this.

Cross that bridge when or IF it comes.

What if this shooting is totally out of character?

Cross what bridge?

The bridge where he feels emboldened to commit MORE murders which you could have prevented?

If it’s first shooting then it IS out of character. But every mass killer has a first murder which is “out of character”, even if they were a previous offender in some way.

I wonder how dinner conversations proceed in a household where everyone is shielding a wanted, self-confessed murderer. The vibe must kinda suck.

Wilfulignoranceabounds · 12/09/2025 16:03

Presumably, he knows his dad’s character. So when he confessed to his dad, he probably knew what the outcome would be.

Don't forget that Daddy would have theoretically forced his 10 year old daughter to give birth to child as a result of rape and would have commended his son to death if he turned out to be gay.

What relevance does this have to the shooters crime though?

That the world is better without him.

Absentosaur · 12/09/2025 16:03

Surely the question is if your child confesses to you that they’ve murdered someone, because they don’t agree with that persons’ views, would you turn them in?

The punishment they may or may not receive is not relevant. They murdered someone, and told you. The moral dilemma is do you turn them in?

Trump is gonna personally pull that switch, the blood-thirsty maniac.

Bunnycat101 · 12/09/2025 16:04

The article I read said the dad was in law enforcement. I doubt he had much choice if that is the case. Must be heartbreaking for his family to have to hand him in knowing the death penalty might apply but he assassinated someone in cold blood and wasn’t likely to be ‘safe’ to be around the rest of the family. I don’t think any of us can really know what you’d do under the circumstances but it was inevitable he was going to be caught and a peaceful arrest was going to be safer for everyone including the wider family than a possible shoot off.

I was thinking the same. How many people are murdered each year in the US by bad guys with guns (intentionally shot not accidents)? A lot I’d imagine. And how many get a death sentence? I may be wrong but I thought that death sentences were pretty rare and reserved for particularly nasty killings. And for other recent political murders, what’s happened there?

This is why I can’t understand how they can value human life so much that they oppose abortion but then are pro death penalty ?

They want to protect innocent life. Protecting innocent life means dealing with those who take innocent lives.

Let’s not forget that the Innocence Project has released multiple murderers who have, surprise surprise!, murdered innocent people again.

bapples1 · 12/09/2025 16:04

Thing is hate or love Charlie Kirk.

Did he deserve to be shot for daring to debate ? For having an opinion you don’t like?

No and no.

This. I didn't know who he was before this & politically am the opposite to him but condoning his death means I'm ok with someone murdering me for my beliefs.

I disagree with the death penalty and am pro choice; but objectively speaking I can see the difference between an adult who makes a conscious decision to commit a heinous crime and an 'innocent' baby in utero.

NamelessNancy · 12/09/2025 16:05

MyDeftHedgehog · 12/09/2025 15:50

Even if the defendant had murdered one of your loved ones?

Ah, good point. In that case I possibly would from a desire for revenge. I think that's a natural enough reaction from a loved one. Justice, however, should be dispassionate and not in the hands of those seeking revenge.

I'm also pretty sure I would (rightly) not qualify as a juror in any case with a close personal connection.

ShesTheAlbatross · 12/09/2025 16:05

I fundamentally disagree with the death penalty.

However, I would encourage my son to turn himself in, and if he didn’t, I would do it. Firstly, I’d hope that maybe if he turned himself in, it would look better. Secondly, I would assume that he is going to be caught at some point, so I wouldn’t see how delaying the inevitable would be particularly helpful, and may end in him being killed by police. Thirdly, if I knew he’d killed someone, that just isn’t something I’d be able to simply ignore.

bapples1 · 12/09/2025 16:06

Wow, shooting people you dislike for their beliefs doesn't make the world a better place @CaptainMyCaptain, why would you think that?

IF he gets the Death penalty it will be political

SaturatedCorn · 12/09/2025 16:07

You have to realize that sitting on death row is a life time activity. There are murderers on there who have been convicted decades ago. The electric chair doesn't turn up the next day.

IGaveSoManySigns · 12/09/2025 16:07

I find the entire thing very bizarre. But I think in the circumstances yes I would turn him in

bapples1 · 12/09/2025 16:07

Also if he confessed to his dad & the dad kept quiet he could be charged.

I'm not praising the shooter. Obviously he shouldn't have done it but Kirk was evil too.
He's the one that spoke about children being acceptable collateral regarding gun ownership. He and the shooter are as bad each other so I can't bring myself to care.

Arlanymor · 12/09/2025 16:08

You can't be in the jury in a capital case where the death penalty is on the table if you are opposed to the death penalty - it's one of the filtering questions they ask when they determine if you are suitable to serve or not.

But I agree, it's totally barbaric, I am very much against it.

ScholesPanda · 12/09/2025 16:08

I don't agree with the death penalty.

I think in this case, it's probably the better option though. If he's stayed at large he probably would have been killed- either by the police or angry Trump supporters.

With the US legal system, he could maybe avoid the death penalty through a plea deal, and even if he gets it he could spend years in death row before it's enacted.

Do you have a source for that? A quick Google has brought back nothing about it

bapples1 · 12/09/2025 16:09

@CaptainMyCaptain so you think because he's evil & now dead the world is better?

Wow you think people with milquetoast Christian beliefs are evil and it’s ok if they die?

Thats actually kinda extreme.
