Turn your son in knowing it’s the death penalty?

TaupeLemur · 12/09/2025 15:28

Kirk’s killer has apparently been turned in by his family - or persuaded to hand himself in.
Trump &’his supporters have been very vocal about getting the death penalty for the shooter.

would YOU hand your child over, knowing that the electric chair would be the likely outcome?

YANBU - I wouldn’t turn him in to die.

YABU - I would he’s a killer and deserves all he gets

No, never. He might have turned out to be an evil little shit but I disagree with the death penalty for anyone.

LaurieFairyCake · 12/09/2025 15:30

Yanbu

i fundamentally disagree with the death penalty

TaupeLemur · 12/09/2025 15:32

I believe the dealt penalty is about revenge not justice, and often used against the poorest in societies, so oppose it. Can’t imagine handing my child in to be killed by the state, regardless of their crime.

If all evidence is a definite that's him and he admits it, why shouldn't it be a death penalty?

Kirk's 2 children are now growing up without a Daddy.

TitanicWasAGreatMovie · 12/09/2025 15:32

I don't think I could, but something has clearly gone very wrong that they raised an assassin.

PleaseGetBetter · 12/09/2025 15:33

Makes me laugh how all these “pro lifers” lose their beliefs when it comes to the death penalty.

Mrsttcno1 · 12/09/2025 15:33

It’s the death penalty that changes it for me.

If this was in the UK, and was my son, absolutely I would turn him in so it is in no way that I would want to help him avoid taking responsibility. It is an awful thing he has done and he should be held accountable.

But I fundamentally disagree with the death penalty, for anyone, so I truly don’t know.

NamelessNancy · 12/09/2025 15:33

I wouldn't turn anyone in if the death penalty was likely. Neither would I find them guilty as a juror. It's barbaric and has no place in a civilised society.

Rightandwrong · 12/09/2025 15:33

I totally disagree with the death penalty.

jettisoned · 12/09/2025 15:34

No I disagree with state sanctioned murder. I suspect it will be via firing squad.

maggiecate · 12/09/2025 15:34

Safer to do that and let him take his chances with the legal system than have it end in a situation where he gets shot dead in a standoff with the police. They were going to find him, de-escalating the situation was the best possible outcome.

This echoes everything I was going to say.

Utah only has the firing squad I think. No other methods available there

jettisoned · 12/09/2025 15:37

They have lethal injection too I think

newshoestoday · 12/09/2025 15:38

I don’t agree with the death penalty, ever, under any circumstances, including when it was my own relative that was the murder victim and I was sitting looking at that killer. That killer would have killed again as he’d killed before, so I’m glad we just have prison in this country, what a moral dilemma.

ComtesseDeSpair · 12/09/2025 15:38

I presume his family know him fairly well and what’s been reported so far seems to indicate they’ve had concerns for some time and now fear he may kill again. If they don’t turn him in, how many other people might he murder?

I don’t support the death penalty but if it were that or fearing that my kid might go on to become the perpetrator of perhaps even more heinous crimes, yes, I’d turn them in.

Pixiedust49 · 12/09/2025 15:39

I don’t agree with the death penalty but…. if my son or daughter had been shot in cold blood would I feel differently about the killer? Maybe….

Thanks, I must have misremembered

I don’t agree with the death penalty either but my issue would be - if I don’t turn him in, what if he keeps killing?

Does that make ME complicit in the deaths of any more victims?

unsurewhattodoaboutit · 12/09/2025 15:42

Nope I sure as hell wouldn’t be turning him in. It would be like throwing him away. This government are not just, moral, ethical in any sense, so why would you?

CalmCyanBeaker · 12/09/2025 15:45

I am a bit surprised he did not kill himself. With the recent catholic school shooting the killer turned his gun on himself. Suicide bombers know they are not going to leave the scene alive to face trial. I think this young man was stupid to think he could get away with it ,and to me that makes him more dangerous.

Bigcat25 · 12/09/2025 15:46

He would have been caught anyway, there would have been hell to pay for the rest of the family, and possible retribution, if the parents helped hide him. See Gabby petitio. They have two other kids to think about.

If all evidence is a definite that's him and he admits it, why shouldn't it be a death penalty?

Kirk's 2 children are now growing up without a Daddy.

Weren't his family in the audience so his 3 year old daughter may well remember watching her dad die in front of her.

That said, people tend to avoid the death penalty when they turn themselves in and cooperate.

CurlewKate · 12/09/2025 15:46

I have absolutely no idea how I would act in these circumstances. I don’t think any of us can.

HypnoToads · 12/09/2025 15:47

If the father didn't don't turn his son in, there was the risk of the son being killed in a confrontation with police/committing suicide/killing someone else. I don't know the laws but I imagine the father could've possibly been charged for not turning him in.
