To think ‘most people’ don’t get their windows cleaned this often?

Disagreement in our house today. Do ‘most people’ (which after some discussion was pinned down to people in 30s/40s in eg 3 bed semi with a kid or two 😅) have their windows cleaned every 6-8 weeks?

YABU - of course they do
YANBU - definitely not ‘most’

Never (in the 18 months since they were installed). Despite living in a 3 bed semi we are not flush enough to pay someone to clean our windows! Will get round to it ourselves sometime.

Mine haven’t been washed for about 10 years, and they look no different than anyone else’s.

They must look different from anybody else's who's got clean windows!

Gwenhwyfar · 08/09/2025 19:52

I don't think people who do it themselves do, but if they have a window cleaner, they might do. The one I asked said he only took on customers who would get it done every two weeks! I found that to be unreasonably often so didn't take his services, but if I was an old/infirm person who couldn't do it myself, I might have had to.

  1. bed Victorian semi. Just counted, 11 large windows. Every 3 months and cost 36 pounds. We live on a dirt and stone road though so a lot of dust.
luckylavender · 08/09/2025 19:54

Mine done once a month

PithyTaupeWriter · 08/09/2025 19:54

We have lived in our current house for 11 years now and have never had the windows cleaned. We're not against window cleaning, just have never gotten around to it. I think it's well overdue though....

Babybirdmum · 08/09/2025 19:55

I get a one off clean done every 6 months

CoffeeLipstickKeys · 08/09/2025 19:56

Windows every 8wk we have a lot of windows

Wonderwall23 · 08/09/2025 19:56

I recently had my windows cleaned, actually...first time in 12 years!

I do the outside glass in the patio doors myself about three times a year and the kitchen window glass maybe once. But this was the first time in the 12 years for the upstairs or having the downstairs done 'properly'. I do the inside glass every week or so.

I can't deny that the sills were grimy but in all honesty I cant say Ive noticed a difference in the actual glass. I also very rarely see a window cleaner anywhere and surely I'd have noticed if all my street were having regular cleans.

People can spend on what they like (windows, cleaners, gardeners etc) and that's fine. But if anyone out there is struggling with the cost of living and thinks this is a must have, I beg to differ!

Vegalyra · 08/09/2025 19:58

Our window cleaner comes every 3 months or so. Maybe every other month would be ideal, but can’t justify the cost.

GleisZwei · 08/09/2025 19:58

We briefly paid for our windows to be spray cleaned but I can do a better job myself - I find it quite therapeutic and do as and when required.

Sorry I’m so nosey - how much does it cost where you live?!

steppemum · 08/09/2025 20:01

no window cleaner.

Insides done about 3 times a year when they bug me.
Outsides done about once a year on the ground floor, by me on a step ladder

Dh says he will do upstairs and doesn't. So twice in 15 years I have called up a window cleaner and got the windows and the frames and sills cleaned.

zaazaazoom · 08/09/2025 20:01

I stopped the window cleaner, car cleaner and house cleaner and decided to live with the mess and occasionally do it ourselves. and went on lovely holiday for a week to Greece. The cleaner was the big saving £35 a week. Well worth it! !

PlasticineKing · 08/09/2025 20:02

I have the window cleaner round every 4-6 weeks whenever he’s in the area. £10 well spent as far as I’m concerned!

jamnpancakes · 08/09/2025 20:02

We have ours done once a month. That's what most of the companies here offer.

WildJoker · 08/09/2025 20:03

I’ve lived in my house 40 years - tried several times to get a window cleaner - they come a few times then just never come back, (might be because they are the original leaded light glass windows) - so no, we don’t have a window cleaner and we don’t clean them on the outside - peeping out, the world has a soft focus filter - there worse things in life and l can live with it.😜

C152 · 08/09/2025 20:03

I've never met anyone who has paid to have their windows clean.

Oblomov25 · 08/09/2025 20:06

Ours came to often so Dh told him no! Af now he comes every couple of months, or 3 months, Perfect. £24

Flicitytricity · 08/09/2025 20:07

I have mine done monthly. He's an old fashioned ladder and bucket of water kind of guy, but he clears the gutters while he's up there wipes down the sills and charges £9 to do 10 windows and 2 patio doors.
Cheap as chips, worth every penny.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 08/09/2025 20:07

Every month. Im about 30 feet away from the woods, my windows would be green if I didn’t!

Franpie · 08/09/2025 20:07

DelphiniumBlue · 08/09/2025 18:07

Ours are done every 6-8 weeks, in the front of the house. The back windows are done hardly ever, maybe once a year.

Same.

A company comes round every 6 weeks or so and cleans the front windows of most of the houses on our street. Only costs £20.

treacledan71 · 08/09/2025 20:07

Once every 2 months my window cleaner comes outside. . I have lots of little windows on the front. It's good in some respect as can't really see them dirty but when you do do them inside it's s pain.

steppemum · 08/09/2025 20:08

we have a sort of middling street, mostly owner occupied, but not all, and a mix of house sizes.
There are 2 window cleaning vans that come round and do windows. I think about 20% of the street get them cleaned. the rest of us do it ourselves

verybighouseinthecountry · 08/09/2025 20:09

I recently moved into a very deprived area, think terraces of very small council housing. Window cleaners come around WEEKLY, with most people getting both front and back windows done this often. I'm the slattern clearly, as I asked him if he would do them 3 monthly and he said he couldn't do less than monthly.
