To think ‘most people’ don’t get their windows cleaned this often?

Disagreement in our house today. Do ‘most people’ (which after some discussion was pinned down to people in 30s/40s in eg 3 bed semi with a kid or two 😅) have their windows cleaned every 6-8 weeks?

YABU - of course they do
YANBU - definitely not ‘most’

If left to myself, I'd probably clean them every few years.

However, my next door neighbour is a window cleaner and does mine for free about once a month in exchange for a cooked meal.

Shinysunday · 09/09/2025 08:31

There could be regional variations here. I know quite a few people who never get their windows cleaned, whatever the size of their house and family.

isitmytime · 09/09/2025 08:42

Mine get done every 4 weeks but I’m thinking of cancelling as he does a pretty shit job with one of the brushes on a pole thing and there’s one window that he doesn’t do at the side of the house. But it’s only £9 and I honestly think I would hardly ever do them myself because I’m lazy and it’s a tedious job.
the insides get done probably once a year at Christmas!

ThirdStorm · 09/09/2025 09:06

Every 8 weeks for me too, I deliberately chose a window cleaner who wouldn't push me into more frequently.

LillyPJ · 09/09/2025 09:09

Rain makes my car and my windows dirty. I live in the edge of the countryside on a quiet road so I don't think the air is particularly dirty here.

It costs £50. They only get done every 16 weeks.

How big is your house???

Honeypizza · 09/09/2025 09:33

We've lived in our house 8 years and never had them done and it's not occurred to me to get them done either. They don't really need it? I'm quite surprised by this thread!

imsotiredohsotired · 09/09/2025 09:34

Not big but we have bi-folds. Had 3x quotes and all were the same price!

This thread is one of the reasons I love Mumsnet.....
I'm the other side of 50, lived in a few places. Currently in a 3 bed semi in a city. We've never paid for a window cleaner and I'm utterly baffled but intrigued by the concept/question.
Dh cleans the windows occasionally? Well at least the reachable ones. Maybe 3-4 times a year? Pretty much always has to point it out to me... I'm always like "oh yeah, it's cleaner/sparklier....but secretly whatever..
I love the window cleaning crew but confess to being totally baffled

Maybe you'd be less 'baffled' if you consider other people aren't you.

Your DH does it, not you, so really no different to those of us who don't have a DHDW, paying someone to do it.

£11 pm £2.50 a week is worth it to me to have them done (monthly) especially the sky lights.

its not a moral failing to pay a window cleaner as several posters seem to think.

How does it work with your window cleaners? Do they come in a scheduled day ? The cleaner I contacted, would only come on the day of his choosing and if the resident is not in, they jump/climb over the fence to get to the back windows.

Mine turn up when they choose.

tarmacpheasant · 09/09/2025 09:46

We do ours monthly. Approaching 40s. Kids. Busy road. Some neighbours do the same. Some not at all. But there's no in between.

Don’t forget the skirting boards…

Weirdly, I clean the skirting boards every week. I hate seeing the dust on them!

Mine comes roughly every 4 weeks but no set day. Leaves me a slip if I’m not in to say they’ve been cleaned. Sometimes he comes back for the money or he leaves it till next month. I pay the small charge £4.50 in cash - one of the few things I need cash for

They would undoubtedly look better if they were cleaned. You've just got used to dirty windows.

Mine comes roughly every 5 weeks. He texts the day before for me to leave the gate unlocked. I pay via direct debit.

Yes. We didn’t have a window cleaner for the first couple of years after moving into this house and I kept saying ‘they look fine, no need for a window cleaner’. We then had them cleaned as part of having our gutters cleared out and I realised the difference it made 😳. We now have them done monthly.

Same with mine. A text the night before to ask me to leave the gate unlocked. I pay by bank transfer after he’s been.

Really? No one you know has a window cleaner?
I’m fairly scummy but the window cleaner comes once a month!

No, not one at all, ever.

Maybe they just don’t talk about it? I don’t know if most of my friends have a window cleaner, I’ve never asked.

PollyBell · 09/09/2025 10:53

My inlaws have one have done for years

zingally · 09/09/2025 10:59

I "inherited" a window cleaner from the previous occupant.
When I first met him, he told me he'd come "about every 8 weeks". Well, me being me, I monitor how long it is between visits. It's always been at least 10 weeks, and often as many as 12.
I don't care really, but I'd prefer him to be a little more consistent.

BauhausOfEliott · 09/09/2025 11:26

Ours get done maybe every six weeks or so. We didn't actually request that frequency, that's just when the window cleaner does his round in our area.

Katemax82 · 09/09/2025 11:31

We never get ours done god we live in a bungalow and do it ourselves...once a year

TwinklyFawn · 09/09/2025 11:54

My window cleaner comes every 4 weeks. I tell him not to clean in the back during the summer as he moans when people sit in the garden. I am not sitting in the house when it is nice.
