To think ‘most people’ don’t get their windows cleaned this often?

Disagreement in our house today. Do ‘most people’ (which after some discussion was pinned down to people in 30s/40s in eg 3 bed semi with a kid or two 😅) have their windows cleaned every 6-8 weeks?

YABU - of course they do
YANBU - definitely not ‘most’

This thread is one of the reasons I love Mumsnet.....
I'm the other side of 50, lived in a few places. Currently in a 3 bed semi in a city. We've never paid for a window cleaner and I'm utterly baffled but intrigued by the concept/question.
Dh cleans the windows occasionally? Well at least the reachable ones. Maybe 3-4 times a year? Pretty much always has to point it out to me... I'm always like "oh yeah, it's cleaner/sparklier....but secretly whatever..
I love the window cleaning crew but confess to being totally baffled

I'm generally frugal - don't get my nails done, don't buy coffees, clean my own car etc. But I do pay to have my windows cleaned. I'm hopeless at doing them myself and I love the extra light that clean windows bring. I visit a friend who doesn't have her windows cleaned and they look awful.

Thamantha · 08/09/2025 23:22

I clean my own windows a couple of times a year, or whenever the state of them bugs me.

I totally understand others choosing to pay someone to do it for them, but for me the idea of spending £250 a year (as someone here mentioned they pay) on keeping them clean when i could do it myself and have a nice night away instead boggles me.

ninjahamster · 08/09/2025 23:23

No window cleaner here.

CarpetKnees · 08/09/2025 23:28

About once every 12 years here.

I do sometimes do the front room window myself (say once a year).

I've never paid a window cleaner in my life!

Neither have I!

Pastaandoranges · 08/09/2025 23:34

Once a year or maybe twice for us. Seems to be enough. I can reach most of them so occassionally also do the outside myself.

Our house is very tall and narrow, with three storeys. We have to book scaffolding for everything, so there's no chance we could do it ourselves!

Titsywoo · 08/09/2025 23:37

I do my own but I live in a bungalow. Only bother about twice a year and they look fine. The people I paid previously (I tried 3 or 4 companies) did a shit job so I stopped bothering.

SunnyDolly · 08/09/2025 23:38

Used to have them done monthly but now we just call them up for a good clean every 6 months! I loved monthly tbh we just couldn’t afford it anymore!

Jumpingthruhoops · 09/09/2025 00:15

We have ours cleaned once a month.

TheReformedSlob · 09/09/2025 00:57

Never.

Maybe I'm not such a reformed slob after all.

jamnpancakes · 09/09/2025 01:21

I can't believe people have never heard of window cleaners or don't know people who have their windows cleaned. As well as windows I get my bin cleaned too 😂

BlueandWhitePorcelain · 09/09/2025 02:17

The window cleaner does ours every month. I thought that was normal.

SouthernNights59 · 09/09/2025 02:37

I clean my own windows - once a year. Most people I know clean their own windows, but I'm not in the UK.

Honestly, it's like a return to the 1950s on MN with all this continual cleaning!

LittleCarrot12 · 09/09/2025 02:43

I do mine twice a year. The window cleaner comes every 3 weeks which is why I don’t use him.

youalright · 09/09/2025 03:12

Twice a year but in the past iv gone years without cleaning them and letting the rain do it

BourgeoisBabe · 09/09/2025 04:05

We get ours done about twice a year

123218474D · 09/09/2025 04:17

Mine are cleaned by a window cleaner monthly at the moment as we are in a new build and surrounded by lots of other houses in construction. The dust really dirties the windows. We will have them done less frequently once the other houses around us are built.

Fortunately it’s nothing like the 50s because I’m paying someone else to clean the windows, while I’m out at work, instead of doing it myself!

KimTheresPeopleThatAreDying · 09/09/2025 07:00

Maybe twice a year? Don’t care really.

Cantseetreesforthewood · 09/09/2025 07:03

Old house, no window cleaner (noone round us did).

New house, inherited the existing cleaner. He comes once a month, and you can really tell when he's been. Makes me clean the insides more often too, as you know it's inside dirt, and you can't fool yourself the rain will sort it!

It's £120 over the year. Not much in the scheme of things, tho if he said he had to reduce the frequency, I wouldn't object.

LillyPJ · 09/09/2025 07:58

Mine (£15 every 5 weeks) works out at about £3 a week. I think it's well worth it. Not only do I get better light and views, he also cleans the frames and sills. Some people spend more than £3 a DAY on coffee and think nothing of it.

This is what rain is for

Rain leaves my windows streaky, and with chalky-looking marks where the drops have dried.

We're in a hard water area, and it appears to extend to the water in the sky!

Flossflower · 08/09/2025 19:09

All those saying the rain cleans them, do you ever wash your car?

No, my car gets a yearly wash when it's serviced 😀
