The tone on some of the other threads is very 'two tier keir' 'we need reform' 🤢🤢🤢

She had to go. Shame as I thought she was likeable

I remember when he tried to fire her before and she refused to be fired iirc 😭😭

Who will replace her? Who do you want to replace her?

I'm not arsed tbh, but needed a non faragey thread

Yes we should expect better but right now it's a case of choosing between a nasty case of COVID and a bout of Black Death. I'll let you guess which is which in that scenario.

theonlyonestillawake · 05/09/2025 16:01

David Lammy appointed deputy PM. What do we think?

StandFirm · 05/09/2025 16:02

And I am saying this as someone who's really been clobbered by the last budget. There's much I disagree on with Labour's economic strategy but they have achieved some important things with the EU. They have strengthened our defence partnerships. Reform will trample all over that and import the nastiest of all culture wars.

gannett · 05/09/2025 16:03

I am not going to defend Rayner but all I want to say is even if she had deliberately set out to pull off a 40k scam (as opposed to try to navigate a very specific set of personal circumstances), that wouldn't even rank in the top 3 most disgusting actions by members of the Labour front bench alone this week.

I'm more outraged by Keir Starmer's latest racist-pandering, by Yvette Cooper's deranged flag-fucking and by Wes Streeting's cack-handed attempt to insert himself into culture war discourse.

I'm sad that Rayner's career has taken this turn but we've seen MPs come back from much, much worse (often within a few months) so I'm sure she'll be fine. Maybe when she comes back she can bring her spine this time, because that was sorely lacking over the past year.

I agree she had to go. I feel let down by the fact that I thought she was better. No idea who might replace her. I wish Yvette Cooper would take over from Starmer to be honest….she seems the most sensible out the lot of them. The media and public are so against Starmer now (rightly or wrongly) that I feel him remaining in charge is just damaging the party.

I fully agree. Yvette is the best person in the Labour party. Unfortunately I think she is too sensible to ever go for PM. I think she is very honest and likeable though. And intelligent.

CautiousLurker01 · 05/09/2025 16:12

Am a big fan of Wes Streeting and think he’d make a good deputy PM if he could kept the Health portfolio too.

WitchesofPainswick · 05/09/2025 12:36

Farage has said "We are taking them down one by one" - he's right. I think Reform and their backers will do this to the entire government and either force a GE or just win the next one.

It's becoming inevitable that Reform will get in, set fire to regulatory rules and fuck the country up.

I agree with this 🥺

I just feel, despairingly, that they are just not that good at actual politics.

I disagree sharply with AR on gender issues but otherwise like her. I liked her taking on the Toryboys on her own terms, her warmth.

But this, it's just basic hygiene. If you are actual goddamn housing minister, and you have already had questions raised about your taxes, and you have criticised others on this.... you just do better. You check and double check. You manage the optics.

It's like the whole Lord Ali thing again. I do not care in the slightest if Starmer had a pair glasses bought for him or his son studied in a friend's flat. But for goodness sake, wouldn't you see how it looked? How much of a distraction it would be?

They're politicians! Optics is their job ffs.

I liked this earlier but had to say that youre spot on

Yvette Cooper with her 20-year history of throwing immigrants under the bus? She's the kind of MP who made me give up hope in the Labour Party.

shiningstar2 · 05/09/2025 16:25

Life long Labour voter here but yes she had to go. I admire her as someone who has used the opportunities which were open to her to pull herself up by her bootstraps in a way which not many could achieve. However you can't shout the odds about tax evasion/avoidance of others without making sure you are squeaky clean yourself. Even from the back benches she's been an MP long enough to have seen plenty of others across party go for dubious financial issues and she's a quick learner. learnt quickly what you can and can't say in the House for example and to have come so far so fast, holding her own amongst the wealthy, well connected and very well educated she can't be naive. Amongst her many top jobs she is housing secretary for goodness sake. Claiming she is misinformed on a house tax issue as Housing Secretary is hardly a good look. She should have checked and checked again. I fear she may have got a tiny bit greedy to choose the option she did without being absolutely certain sure. She has not only embarrassed herself but the Party which. gave her such tremendous opportunities and, despite her competence and rhetoric has let herself and others down. It's time to return to the Back Benches for now but I hope this is not the end of a successful parliamentary career for her.

Thank you for starting what is a a reasonably well-balanced thread (aside from a few posters). I am so fed up with the far right rhetoric on MN.

I don’t know if we will ever know the truth as to how much Angela was aware that her financial moves here were not above board, but I agree that under the circumstances she had no choice but to resign. I’m sorry as I quite liked her. The hypocrisy from the Tories/Reform is shocking.

A general election would be a good idea.

No, this would be a dreadful idea, I'm really afraid reform will get in 😔

Surely her hypocrisy is the issue given she went for others as she did. Name calling etc

I think you might need to re-read what I wrote rather than what you think I wrote?!

The sentence you’ve highlighted was about ALL politicians regardless of right or left wing so your comment is nonsensical. We won’t tolerate dishonestly and lies from any politician no matter what party and we should not tolerate it. Unless of course you believe that some should be allowed to lie??!

Yeah the hypocrisy is absolutely sickening. Tories who were involved in their own tax scandals playing all innocent and reprimanding her. The meme the daily mail have published of her in front of a council house. The whole thing reeks of classism and misogyny, and anyone (irrespective of their political affiliation, because it’s not really a political issue) should be horrified by the rampant hypocrisy

Hard agree

TBH I think her departure is a good thing for Labour in general.

She is widely disliked outside of Labour, and I think represents a side of Labour a lot of middle ground voters don’t like.

I think she has achieved a lot though and faced a lot of misogynist and classist abuse over the years, so sad to see her go over something like this (acknowledging she’s in the wrong…!)

I wonder if now facing the insane taxes the well-paid classes are, she’s had any change of thought about the fairness of them. She’s always been so pro ‘the rich’ being rinsed, but she’s one of them now and is… trying to avoid paying punitively high tax.

This post made me sad tbh - the middle ground voters being well off liberal people?

She could've been the one to take on farage imo - keir starmer cant do it.

Working class, direct and someone with a work ethic (to appease benefit bashers)

Agree with pp who said that the people behind farage are celebrating this home run

But then you can't get on your high horse and preach about morals when it comes to someone else.

If you are a Trump/Johnson/Farage supporter then you have no place in this conversation criticising Rayner. No place at all.

Agree

She, imo, was the only threat to reform

who is going to complete the 1.5m houses now Angela has gone from housing

viking11 · 05/09/2025 18:35

I liked Rayner a lot and thought she had to put up with a hell of a lot of snobbery and prejudice. Just look at most posts about her on here.
Based on the details I think this was a genuine mistake too rather than a deliberate dodge.
There really isn’t anyone else I respect in this government, I’m afraid. I really dread the Farage government that is surely now almost certain.

I couldn't agree more. As a strong woman that was authentic, she was a powerful opponent. I hope she comes back stronger.

No. You will find that Rayner has done a pretty spectacular job of being the architect of her own demise. Truth hurts.

Gladysknightjustwalkinmyshoes · 05/09/2025 18:46

It's not in inevitable that Farage will get in labour have four years to turn it around.
Four years is a long time in politics and they're councils aren't doing very well .
Glad I'm in Scotland yes Reform Will make some gains but they're still deeply unpopular in Scotland.
There was a hotel protest in my home city 120 people involved out of a population of roughly 193,000 adults.
These bams are not as important as certain sections of the media would have us believe.
