The tone on some of the other threads is very 'two tier keir' 'we need reform' 🤢🤢🤢

She had to go. Shame as I thought she was likeable

I remember when he tried to fire her before and she refused to be fired iirc 😭😭

Who will replace her? Who do you want to replace her?

I'm not arsed tbh, but needed a non faragey thread

I’m a small “c” conservative and take a fairly dim view of most of the political classes these days. I haven’t been thrilled with Labours performance so far, but ruled myself out of complaining as I couldn’t bring myself to vote for anyone at all during the last election. So I’m not a fan girl by any means.
However, I actually feel very sorry for Rayner. More than anything else, I think this whole fiasco has exposed that our tax system is an utter mess. She will have paid a metric fuck tonne in tax already on that house, but the system wants more because she’s trying to ensure security for her disabled child?
Stinks to high heaven.

Thinking the press might go after Farage with the same vigour? Yeah you're right

@BallerinaRadio , oh I don’t doubt it for a moment. The establishment will be employing everything at their disposal to bring him down because they know that is the ONLY way to stop him. The ONLY way. 😘

HRTQueen · 05/09/2025 13:38

Rayner should have resigned a few days, but she isn't a person of integrity

I am disappointed that Starmer was not firmer in his responses, he was appearing to give her the benefit of the doubt and the whole pr spin around the story was disingenuous and having senior cabinet ministers praising her through gritted teeth was ridiculous

This isn't just damaging to Rayner and her political career, which is over, its damaging to government

They really need to sort their pr out

joanofaardvark · 05/09/2025 13:41

I'm a life long lefty but to be honest I think this whole thing makes her look stupid. I cannot believe that she did not take proper tax advice given a) this is not a straightforward funding of/purchase of a property b) she's a member of the government (and one who has been vocal about standards in public life). It makes me think she's a bit stupid and I don't want stupid people running the country any more than I want dishonest pocket-liners in those positions of power.

minecraftmind · 05/09/2025 13:42

I just saw a snippet online from the Daily Telegraph today with disgusting comments, boasting about how their “tenacious” reporting led to her downfall, and finishing by saying it’s all over now “Ange”. Would they ever talk about a man in that way?

'A general election would be a good idea'

Right. Who is it exactly that you're itching to vote for?

I think we know! 😂

The irony of your username.

So that Reform can get in? Have you read their manifesto? Its absolute pie in the sky.
What are your thoughts about Richard Tice’s comments about parents getting EHCP’s so their children can get free transport?

Im really disappointed with AR, she should have been absolutely watertight. But the way she has been hounded is pure misogyny and classism.

i despair for our country right now, I really do.

StandFirm · 05/09/2025 13:52

SarahG17 · 05/09/2025 12:34

A general election would be a good idea.

no fucking way

Bagsintheboot · 05/09/2025 13:53

I'm not really bothered by whether she left or stayed.

I am REALLY annoyed by the level of misinformation in the press about how simple trust law and SDLT is (spoiler: it's not).

I was just as irritated when the Duke of Westminster died and all the red tops were banging on about how his son didn't pay any inheritance tax (because the trusts pay it you absolute bloody idiots) to whip up the masses.

dizzydizzydizzy · 05/09/2025 13:54

BallerinaRadio · 05/09/2025 12:20

Farage's name should be all over this now though. I wanna see the same focus and attention put on his tax affairs. Multiple Tory ministers got away with much worse without even apologising.

The hypocrisy surrounding this is off the scale. Badenoch gleefully posting about ministers having to do the right thing as leader of the Tory Party.... They can all just fuck off

Agreed!

Butchyrestingface · 05/09/2025 13:55

I don't remember this. Sounds like fun. Grin

SarahG17 · 05/09/2025 12:34

A general election would be a good idea.

It’s been little over a year. Screeching for a GE is so irresponsible. It costs a fortune for a start & means we start all over again. The government has made mistakes but the catastrophe of 14 years of the Tories was never going to be quick & easy.

TheCurious0range · 05/09/2025 13:58

Everyone expects it from farage and the type of people who vote for him don't care. Rayner put herself on a pedestal of morality, taking down 'fat cats' etc so for her to behave that way feels worse to me. I feel let down, I have zero expectations of farage et al and wouldn't vote for them

whenimnotcleaningwindows · 05/09/2025 13:58

Thank you. I think my head exploded all over the last one.

I wish they had actually planned how to tax the super rich before getting into power. If they had done that AT ALL we would have Farage on a spike and this likely wouldn't have been such a huge focus.
She's a bit dim for allowing this to happen though, really.

I agree but she was the person trying to introduce more taxes not fewer

Cloanie · 05/09/2025 14:00

Are we actually surprised she’s confirmed as a bit dim, though. Very disappointing, not actually a surprise.

whenimnotcleaningwindows · 05/09/2025 14:00

dizzydizzydizzy · 05/09/2025 13:54

Agreed!

But Labour have done nothing to tax these people with offshore accounts. They are literally int he driving seat ploughing through people listed with HMRC rather than the ones with all the backseat money and power. Of course he won't be caught, because Labour went for the easy fruit hanging from the middle classes tax tree rather than putting in work to get the big bucks from the big guys.

Let's hope she doesn't need to rent one of those houses. She will soon see what tenants these days are capable of...

minecraftmind · 05/09/2025 13:25

It was neither! The trust was for her son for his security, stability and safety at home. Her oversight was in not seeking out a specialised tax advisor to triple check the advice she had been given by “ordinary” conveyancers and advisors. She ought to have done this to make fully sure that she wasn’t going to get it wrong, and she neglected to, but I don’t believe she chose not to in order to get out of paying the tax. I just think she was stupid / naïve - probably extremely busy with her job and parenting and mistakenly felt it was an unnecessary extra bit of admin - fatal mistake.

Problem is, when you’re in such a prominent position, you can’t afford not to get it right!

Yes I feel the same

I do not have high expectations of Farage, or Johnson a number of self serving MP's. Its the hypocrisy

And why Starmer is stating in his letter that she is a trusted colleague I don't know as she clearly is not

Meadowfinch · 05/09/2025 14:03

Whatever the tone of the other threads, if I knew the law on second homes, and I'm a single mum, no wealth, no political job, then I'm sure she did. I liked her but she's the housing minister for God's sake. So she had to go.
Sad. It's hard to fathom she did anything so foolish.

Pearl69 · 05/09/2025 14:04

Thanks for the thread - I can’t deal with another Faragy one either.

I’m sorry to see her go but she was an idiot to think she could get away with this and it’s a mess.

I’d like to see such diligence by the media into Farages financial affairs seeing as he’s got so much to say. I guess the line between tax avoidance and evasion is a thin one.
