The tone on some of the other threads is very 'two tier keir' 'we need reform' 🤢🤢🤢

She had to go. Shame as I thought she was likeable

I remember when he tried to fire her before and she refused to be fired iirc 😭😭

Who will replace her? Who do you want to replace her?

I'm not arsed tbh, but needed a non faragey thread

Even if you think what she did was wrong, the scale of it is miniscule compared to the rank corruption of Farage and the Tories. COVID funding diverted in the hundreds of millions. Unfortunately people have short memories.

They're all at it, but yes, I would love to know the latest on Michelle Mone's frozen assets and what happened to the rest of the Tory MPs and advisers who got contracts for their cronies.

Whatever the tone of the other threads, if I knew the law on second homes, and I'm a single mum, no wealth, no political job, then I'm sure she did. I liked her but she's the housing minister for God's sake. So she had to go.
Sad. It's hard to fathom she did anything so foolish.

Unless you're au-fait with trust law and the published SDLT legislation, I don't think your knowledge would help much should you find yourself in a similar situation.

Raynor probably thought along much the same lines, which is why she finds herself in this situation.

But Labour have done nothing to tax these people with offshore accounts. They are literally int he driving seat ploughing through people listed with HMRC rather than the ones with all the backseat money and power. Of course he won't be caught, because Labour went for the easy fruit hanging from the middle classes tax tree rather than putting in work to get the big bucks from the big guys.

Yes. It’s the elephant in the room.

RedToothBrush · 05/09/2025 14:08

I think there's something inherently worse about someone going on about how they came from nothing, had all the odds stacked against them, believed in making it better for 'people like me'...

...and then goes and does this and tries to dodge the system for tax.

She was advised to get proper tax advice but ignored this.

It's going to be a huge disappointment for those who thought she was the future of the party and would make genuine changes in a way that someone from a comfortable background couldn't replicate because it carries an extra sense of betrayal.

She's done so much damage to Labour it's difficult to quantify. It plays into the hands of Farage perfectly.

I actually do feel desperately sorry for anyone who put faith in her.

It pisses me off and I'm not anywhere near as too the left as her.

Ah but I think this is it - the £40k surplus is a huge amount of money for her.

You are misguided about who ‘the rich’ are.

The total tax on the new property would be more than her entire annual salary after tax.

If you own more than one property you're rich. 🤷🏼‍♂️ Full stop. And as I said I don't care. I don't care if she dodged some tax. I'm behind her getting sacked if thats what needed to happen. It was very naughty, tut tut. But it shouldn't be front page giant news in every paper.

Really good distraction this, while Farage (who is also a rich tax dodger) is plotting how best to sell the country to Putin's bestie. Why wasn't his stupid gurning face on the front covers with TRAITOR across it? He is ignoring his duties in order to bad mouth us and encourage sanctions!

WorriedRelative · 05/09/2025 14:13

We don't need a general election. We need major electoral reform with proper proportional representation (not that shite excuse for it offered by the coalition).

We urgently need to move away from this adversarial and polarising system and start having a more rounded and representative parliament.

We should be hearing more from the Lib Dems, the Greens and other minority parties. It shouldn't be the case that people feel their vote is being wasted by voting for anyone other than the two main parties.

Framesite · 05/09/2025 14:14

I think she gets the negative publicity she does because she's a working class woman and obviously it's very bad news that's she's achieved what she has from that background as far as they (and weirdly, even many WC people) are concerned.

But, she's been very stupid about this, must have known it would come out and should have taken the very best advice before, not after.

She had to go, but hopefully she'll be back.

I'd guess there are very many Conservative MPs whose trust arrangements wouldn't stand up to such close scrutiny, and we know Farage's tax arrangements are dodgy. He knows we know and doesn't care.

Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely, as they say.

I haven't read Animal Farm since Year 8 but might be time to have another read.

The temptation must have been huge.

She should have bought a property within her budget. Us plebs would tot up the cost of SDLT to the cost of the property, to see if we can afford it.

I'm in the weird position of wondering whether Wes Streeting will end up being our PM.

Well I must admit after seeing this if I was to buy a second property now, say to rent out, I’d take my name off the deeds of the family home a few months before. Pretend we were splitting up and only pay basic stamp duty.

I mean if me and dh were to reconcile down the line that can’t be predicted. And let’s face it Angela would have got away with this if it wasn’t for the media. And doesn’t sound like she’s going to prison. So I’ll chance it and cry and say sorry if caught, say I misunderstood 🤷‍♀️😁

Sidebeforeself · 05/09/2025 14:31

@mumofoneAloneandwell so much for this not becoming a Faragey thread OP!

Unless you actually divorced, this wouldn't work. Spouses are linked for SDLT.

There is no evidence at this point that Rayners actions constitute tax evasion, so there is no reason to suppose any kind of criminal prosecution would be brought.

BlakeCarrington · 05/09/2025 14:34

She did have to go though I’m afraid. Were it not for the press enquiries nobody would’ve found out. So she’d be forcing the public to pay the tax while avoiding it herself. Her position is untenable.

EasternStandard · 05/09/2025 14:54

DemelzaandRoss · 05/09/2025 13:24

I agree 100% with this.
The other sites on Mumsnet are full of hatred for her.
As I posted there, we will never know the complete truth about the tax issue.
It’s difficult to believe she would purposely & callously avoid tax, as she knows she has to be more than ‘squeaky clean’.
I truly despair at the political situation in Britain & the World. My parents were alive in the pre WW2 era & I grew up being assured by them that another war with atrocities could not happen again.
Now I fear for my children & grandchildren because I can see nothing but Right wing horrors in the future.

It’s been covered in the report. It’s not opaque stuff. She messed up and lied which didn’t help.

I’m sure it must have been done. I think your husband / partner would have to show proof that he bought you out of the existing property though.

scalt · 05/09/2025 15:11

It's disappointing that this is happened. While I dislike most politicians, especially those born into wealth, this is a massive gift to the Tories and Reform, cementing the image of "Labour are just as bad as the others", and showing the one-sidedness of the Tory-owned media. I don't want billionaire Tories or Reform led by dripping-with-wealth Farage in government: collectively, they are the Monster Raving Loony party, as far as I am concerned.

Skipthisbit · 05/09/2025 15:16

Unfortunately that won’t wash. The Tories have paid the price for all those things …..they’ve been voted out and voted out so overwhelmingly that they are now a small minority party.

So I really do not understand this stand point from Labour that everything and anything is ok “because it’s not as bad as the Tories.”

The Labour Party should be better ….. we should expect more not just because they are fundamentally supposed to be about the people but they literally ran on an anti-sleaze campaign. In a campaign short on actual policy, they won being trustworthy. And within days it turned out they weren’t but the whataboutery was the excuse and so it continues.

Reform will be an unmitigated DISASTER for this country and the Tories absolutely deserve to be in the wilderness given their dishonesty BUT that doesnt mean that we should play down, ignore, what about, “blame the right wing press” when Labour do the same. Our response should be ferocious until these fuckers learn that we won’t tolerate it from any of them anymore.

scalt · 05/09/2025 15:19

As far as I am concerned, they haven't until they are in prison. The individuals concerned will probably be rewarded with knighthoods and peerages, and retire into wealth that the rest of us will only dream of.

I am really going to have to avoid the news now. Having had such a shitty Tory government for 14 years I had high hopes for Labour sorting shit out, but all this has done is show me they aren't really in charge and there is fuck all hope of anything changing. I wish I had never had kids. Meanwhile my local Labour MP who seems pretty decent got kicked out of the party for disagreeing with their cowardly policies towards vulnerable people and potentially disagreeing with SEND reforms.

I think we really need proportional representation now. The only way we can do that is instead of these 'get the current incumbents out' campaigns in general elections we all decide to vote independent to get party politics out.

I hope my banished MP doesn't go back to Labour for this reason.

Totally agree - proportional representation is the only way to go now so that every politician knows that they will be scrutinised and if they aren’t 100% honest, they are out because each party knows that the electorate can hold them immediately responsible. It would help squash down partisan politics hugely and reward collaboration and compromise

If it was going to save me 40k we’d happily do a diy divorce followed by a civil wedding a couple of years later! 😁
